I still can't believe this, and I doubt we just pulled this off in a few days. Am sure we had to have made contact several weeks ago at least. In any case I don't care. We actually are panic buying to fill a huge hole in the squad, and the best thing of all is that it's a high quality player.

I hope his drive and mentality lifts that shitty dressing room.

Can't wait for it to be official.

That midfield really doesn't look at all balanced to me.

This isn't international football, where that Casemiro/Fred pairing works. Presses like the one we saw against Brentford are way more intense and much better drilled than anything they face at international level. If it's Casemiro and Fred in those deeper positions we'll keep struggling on the ball in exactly the same way we did against Brentford, we'll just defend transitions better afterwards. It isn't exactly Eriksen's natural game either.

Fred desperately needs upgrading to a more possession capable midfielder for that to actually be balanced.

Fair point, but I also suspect that Real wouldn't let Casemiro go if they thought he had more than a couple of years at the top left.

I don't know, it's an odd one. For me he's the best CDM in the world, but doing that in La Liga is totally different to the demands of the EPL. Then again, he looks to be well suited to the game here. Let's see.

But most importantly, feck the Glazers, this is transfer washing of our fans and not genuine commitment to rebuilding our squad in a tactical manner. However good he may be, it's still indicative of a shocking window.

Ndidi and Tielmans come to mind, not so long ago everyone wanted their clubs to spend big on these two but now people are a lot more skeptical.
 
United is clearly in panic mode. Also with the 80m offer on Antony.

However this does not neciserilly mean that these are bad signings. I believe Casemiro would be a great player for United to add to the squad, even if it's a panic buy.

The only thing you have to wonder, if United are splashing out so much cash now, is why in the fecking world did United wait so long. If United has 140m to spend right now, even if 80m was saved for FdJ in the first place and now that money may be moved on, then at least one of Casemiro or Antony could have been brought in much earlier in the (pre-)season.

I don't know about that. We should remember that they purchased his potential replacement at least a year in advance due to missing on Mbappé. It's not as if selling Casemiro this year was part of an early plan.

Every transfer is a risk but somewhat limited if its a younger player who has time to develop. Caciedo has performed well for his national team and so far in the EPL. Madrid took a gamble on Vinicius and he took a few years to come good but look at him now. All the top teams are taking bets on younger talent as the upside is high but downside limited as they will have resale value. A package for Caciedo at 40m and lets say wages of 80k is inifinitley cheaper than Casemiro at 60m and wages of 350k+. Even if Caciedo flopped, we could likely sell him for 20-30m in a few years whereas Casemiro has no resale value. If he flops or declines, we are stuck with a liability on the financial side and on the field.

I am sure ETH spoke about adapting to the players he has or some such thing. He made it clear he wouldn't just stick to his preferred way of playing and suggested he would adapt.
Fans need to listen to what the person in question is saying, and not what the media speculates on. It's a big fat failing in English society that the media seems to dictate what people think.

Real was planning/preparing to sell him during the next two years some good source mentioned.

Its quite a difference of letting someone go and getting upto €70 M which you can reinvest in a younger player , when you have quite decent alternatives in his position already.

As for "Why are Madrid selling him" it has been stated many times they DON'T want to but because he's been such a great player for them they won't stand in his way if he asks to....
 
This one has Varane vibes, and I like it.
Buying a player who is still in his prime is what we need to do if we somehow want to avoid a full rebuild.
Yes, we have to overpay and yes, we wouldn't be his first choice if we didn't offer him big wages and yes, Madrid can afford to lose him.
In an ideal world, we already have proven players and can spend cash for young talents but it's the only way we can stay competitive right now.
The other direction would be to continue with what we have until the inevitable slow death and complete rebuild in the Championship.

The reports were definitely wrong for the simple reason that ETH has been a fairly flexible manager. His career shows that he isn't married to a single idea.

We overpay on salary with every player we sign or give a new contract too. 350,000 for de gea? 200,000 rashford? It fecks our wage structure and every new player we sign will want similar

We don't know what Brighton will want. They got 62m for Cucurella as there was a price war for him due to City and Chelsea being interested. They bought Caciedo for 5m, 40m is a huge profit on their outlay. They could go and buy a replacement at half the fee they will get, that's what they do and do very well. It's worth it to test the waters on the fee. There are also other young players we could target, it's not just Caciedo or bust.

I'd argue it's the Eriksen part that needs upgrading into a press resistant ball carrier like a Barella or a De Jong. Fred's pressing for me is essential
 
Real can sell him because they have the luxury of being at the top and have ready-made alternatives, if not replacements.

Utd can buy him because they need to get back to the top quickly and he is a WC player for now.

Both clubs' interests align because they don't have comparable objectives.

Desperate club signing a quality player. Price is fair enough. Casemiro will be quality for a good few years (injury dependent)

Sure, you could probably sell me on that idea too.

Whoever the third player is, we're desperately lacking at least one press-resistant player who can progress the ball from deeper areas. FDJ was our main target this summer for good reason. If not him then we need someone with some of those attributes.
 
If you said at the start of the window we'd sign Eriksen and Casemiro, I think we'd all be very happy.

I'd say it is very shrewd business and planning, to keep such a good player in the backhand in case the De Jong deal doesn't happen.
I know they aren't really the same type of players, but at least we end up fixing 1 out of 2 glaring holes in our midfield.

You think we are getting £20-30m for someone like Amad, or even Martial, or better still AWB who had a great whole season in the PL?

To be fair, it’s usually hit or miss. But they typically have a shelf-life of a few years.

Who the feck else was he going to make captain? Maybe Casemiro can take the armband off him eventually but he's only just walked through the door.

Nobody else in the squad is worth the effort of kicking up that media fuss.
