Horrific. We should have had the foresight to bin him in the past summer.
Hopefully we can recoup something for him.
Hopefully we can recoup something for him.
He was absolutely diabolical on the ball but he does make us a bit more defensively solid. His positional instincts in and around our box are the best of any of our midfielders, probably better than most of our defenders. It isn’t a coincidence that the ball seemed to be constantly finding him whenever it was played into our box.
His passing though. Boy oh boy. It’s so bad it sometimes looks like deliberate sabotage.
I have no love lost for Bruno but blaming him for some of the brain dead stuff Casemiro has been engaging in here is just easy cop out .Absolutely fine when he plays with Kross and a Modric. Players that can retain the ball and in general, keep you possession. Playing him with Bruno has aged him at least 5 years.
Comically bad in and out of possession

He is not a bad player but I think he needs good players around him, On top of that age is not helping either.
I wonder if Roy Keane or Bryan Robson could do well with this current team to be honest.
Casemiro is a good player signed at wrong time for both club and player perspective.

Yes he was brilliant for that 1 second of the match.
He is a player that can make an impact in moments though. We have too many of those players, of course, but in the current scenario where we have no effective system and players who are struggling to read each other, there isn’t much value to system players. Taking out Casemiro for Amrabat sounds appealing because surely he can’t be any worse. But Amrabat doesn’t have that ability to impact games, and he’s proven himself to be utterly lost in this system just like every other player.
Casemiro’s passing is often careless or lazy, but it’s occasionally very incisive, and often he does it in important moments. It’s just not just one second of a game, but moments in most games. That’s worth recognising while talking about all his deficiencies.
Before that tackle was the ball out of play? His reaction to the tackle suggests he expected a red card and probably because he got sent off last season for less.Poor game but great old school tackle at the end
Would you not agree that the overhead pass to Mainoo which took out half their team was good? He’s like a heavyweight fighter out on his feet after 45 mins. Running around trying to kill everyone. His passing was awful
He tackled and broke things up quite well though for the majority. He had 69% passing accuracy as the base of our midfield.
He’s caught out of position because it’s impossible for one person to cover two midfielders who are constantly ahead of the ball.Looks to me like he has no interest in playing as a DM anymore. I wonder if he was sold a more progressive role when he signed for us, the lack of discipline in his positioning cannot be an accident for someone so experienced at the very highest of levels.
Physically shot or not he's caught out of position constantly and makes little to no effort to recover aside from the increasingly regular wild lunges that always miss the ball and will inevitably land him a(nother) red card very soon
Picking between him and Scott is a real Sophies choice of underwhelm
Surely we've a kid in the academy willing to run his ass off his and just defend for 90 mins?

Also thought he tackled quite well until the yellow at the end.
Madrid recouping £60m and replacing him with Tchouameni and Camavinga is how we should really be run.
Was fantastic last season, but it's crazy how slow and out of sorts he has looked this season. Big decision needs to be made in the summer.
I agree. He’s been poor this season and is probably on the decline. Just thought yesterday wasn’t one of his worst games.Yes for sure. We’ve all seen he has quality on the ball and he’s hard for the opposition to stop for 90 mins but he is so chaotic this season. Maybe it’s fitness, maybe he’s out the door in his head but his concentration and execution has been poor. Fred is like Xavi by comparison with this years Casemiro. I love him as a player since he got here but it was a transfer that was 5 years too late and way too expensive.
I said it at the time.it was mental to pay 60 million for a 30 year old and offer those wages. Any moron could see that he would be an issue in a few years.
I think he tries loads of passes he isn't technically proficient enough to make. They might come off 1 in 10 times. I know we are pretty rubbish right now but I wouldn't say that's enough to counteract how poor he is in general performance.
If we are just accepting being overran in midfield but want moments of expansive passes from deep then we may as well play Eriksen who is a mile ahead of Casemiro in that regard.
Yeah I agree with you there. It’s a strange one, I can’t really think of another player who has the brass balls to play passes well above his station over and over again, fail repeatedly, and just keep going.
He either thinks he needs to push himself to try things beyond his capabilities because he doesn’t trust the players around him to progress the play, or he’s just on holiday and deciding to play with a bit of freedom.
I don’t remember him trying that for Madrid or Brazil. For Madrid you can say he just played his role and deferred to Modric and Kroos, wilfully constrained himself alongside other maestros. But for Brazil he played with all kinds of midfield partners, many of him were even less technical than him, and I don’t remember him playing remotely similarly.
I get the impression he’s just having a laugh a lot of the time. And while I can’t respect that as a supporter of the team, I can kind of understand it on an individual level. You can’t expect people to sacrifice themselves for the cause when it’s self-evident the structure isn’t there to get you there, irrespective of what you do. When things are a shambles, sometimes you have to look for your own small successes, things to keep you going.
Last year he got 6 assists in a season, for the first time in his (European) career. This year he’s gotten 5 goals in 1,800 mins - around 50% better than last year, or any year previous. When we was at Santos he was a box-to-box player, regularly involved in attacking plays with ranging runs in very open matches. He put all that in a box to break through at Madrid, and he just stuck with it. I’m sure a part of him feels like he’s an 18 year old again, playing chaotic football alongside inferior players, trying things he’s not entirely capable of but enjoying the sense of abandon. It’s just a bit mad he doesn’t adapt to the fact he doesn’t have the legs of an 18 year old any more
I really don’t think Eriksen’s been a more incisive passer than Casemiro in his time here. He plays prettier passes and is a lot less careless, but he rarely injects pace into the game, and his progressive passes aren’t particularly incisive. And as much as Casemiro’s slow and reckless off the ball these days, he is still much better at winning the ball and initiating counter-attacks than Eriksen, and his aerial presence all over the pitch counts for a lot given how little of the ball we have.
He still can make great passes but his physic is not there anymore so often he is challenged by the opposite midfield before he can do it. There was a number of times he was outmuscled by Pool when the ball was clearly in his possession.I think it's just that he's playing in the worst midfield he's ever played as a part of in Europe. Probably a mix of feeling 1. If he misplaced passes it's not as bad as it's not like he had the option to give it to Modric or Kroos. Also feeling the need to take more responsibility.
Either way I don't believe he it's a net positive because so many of his attempted passes between the lines or to spring a counter don't come off.
Eriksen passes the ball with less pace but I recently watched a compilation of him last season and I think you are being a bit harsh. I don't actually think he should play and (there is literally only 1 central midfielder we have that I want to watch) but watching the compilation of him last season and he did play a huge number of very well placed passes through the lines that put us onto the next phase of play.
Either way we have a terrible midfield right now.
