Bundesliga 2016/17

Loew better invite Werner to the national team next time. Usually he cannot wait to invite every young player that managed to run 90 minutes without tripping over his own feet twice.

He's more than earned a call up, but I'm not sure he'd be half as effective in a possession oriented team.

That's the problem with Werner though. He loves tripping over his own feet. Especially in the penalty box. ;-)

Anyone seen Lars Stindl's goal for Borussia Mönchengladbach at Ingoldstadt?

In off the arm. . . Basically punched in from a corner.

1-0

Ref is Dingert, no surprise there so.

According to Sky's ref it wasn't necessarily a wrong call, because it wasn't intentional. Though personally I wouldn't have given it because his arm stretched out too far.

The Sky "Expert" - a former Bundesliga referee who knows these refs personally and for many years.

Yesterday former ref Peter Gagelmann tried to defend Hertha's first goal (which was clearly offside) by implying that it might have been a penalty beforehand (which it most definitely was not). Nice bit of whataboutery, designed to get the match officials off the hook, if ever I saw one.

I'll pass when it comes to such "expert" punditry

The guys from Collinas Erben, a popular German podcast about refereeing and in my opinion very reliable and unbiased, also agree with the call. They even cited an instruction by the DFB, not to call for a handball, when the ball deflects to the hand from another bodypart. Long story short, the ref was completely right.

He was right about it being penalty actually

It was actually my first thought when I saw it. Kalou was clearly fouled, stumbled and fell. The goal shouldn't have stood of course, because you can't really play advantage and let the game continue when a player in an offside position causes problems to the goalkeeper.

The problem are the rules when it comes to handballs. There definitely should be an option for the referee to stop the play and award a freekick for non deliberate handballs that gave a clear advantage to one of the teams. In these situations no card should be given to the player as a punishment. Sometimes the natural movement of your arms simply gets in the way, not much you can do about it as a player. In these cases, the rules we have at the moment aren't fair to either team. It's truely silly, that no one found a better wording for the handball rule yet even though it's such a massive problem that gets discussed almost weekly in every league in the world.

Yep, indeed. It's a stupid rule, and it was the correct call.

So Ismael fired. For me, the most surprising thing about it is that it took so long. Who will be the next Wolfsburg coach then?
Ranieri?

Ranieri might even be the best case for Wolfsburg.
But I'm quite sure it will be one of the usual revolving door Bundesliga coaches who gets the job @Wolfsburg.

Maybe Labbadia?
It's about time for him to land another coaching gig for 2 years, before he gets fired again after a few lackluster performances of his new team. Of course his successor will be worse than him, e.g. Gisdol.

Leverkusen 2-0 Mainz now. And it should honestly be 3-0 by now. Mainz missed an easy chance earlier.
All of their players are overrated. Leno, Toprak, Bender, even Chicharito I guess.

Calm down. Their coach has no idea how to set up a proper defense. That's really their problem, not that they're all overrated. FFS

3-0 but your point still stands. just me being pedantic I guess.

sorta hoping hamburg finally gets relegated this season, they're basically sunderland of BuLi at this point.

Everyone is hoping that at this stage. Even hsv fans. They hate the clock as well.

The DFB Pokal quarter-finals yesterday and today. Frankfurt and Gladbach are through, while Bayern are playing now against Schalke. 2-0 thanks to Lewa and Thiago. Dortmund postponed due to heavy snow, instead.
3-0 Lewa.
Easy for Bayern. They seem to work well with the 4-2-3-1 formation, instead of the 4-3-3.
3-0 Bayern FT.

I wouldn't mind if we continuously played our best football after the winter break instead of before.

Wasn't that the same with Carlo at Chelsea and Madrid in his first seasons there?

I remember Chelsea players forcing him to switch tactics half way through. Thing with someone like Carlo is that he will listen. Where as someone like Van Gaal would take no notice.

Be what's this about 'the clock'?
They're the only team who was part of the league when the bundesliga was founded and have never been relegated. That's why they have a clock counting how long they've been in the league and that's why they're called 'the dino'.

you can't really hang up a giant clock rubbing that fact into everyones faces and not expect the other 17 teams and their supporters to draw extra motivation from that. Bayern are no strangers to that facerubbing-thing either, but they are ready to take the heat and even thrive on it. For HSV, it's become more of a burden, recently.

Makes sense now.

Maybe that clock is coming down soon.

Hasn't Ancelotti changed your system? The current one seems to work well.

Not completely, but he is way more open to adjusting the system according to the opponent and the players available, something Guardiola never did and continiously lost us important matches.

Still soooo glad he's gone.
Way more confident in this team than I have been in any of Guardiola's.

Of course, Carlo is a very solid and pragmatic manager ;)

Guardiola *always* adjusted the system according to the next game, and sometimes 2-3x in the game. What he didn't do was always adusting his tactics to *what the players available could do*

I, for one, ain't. He has advanced the team. His plan didn't always work out, maybe because some of the players weren't capable of doing what he expected them to do.

We'll see. It may be easier to win the CL this season than in the seasons before, becuase every contender has shown weaknesses, and Ancelotti may just be the better man when it comes to duels at eye level. I'll be happy to be surprised :)

Leipzig not giving up in the title race. 2-1 up now!
2-2! What a game!
Werner doing his best Gervinho impression here
Leipzig with another chance. They have had so many in the second half. And it's FT! Great result for Bayern.

He adjusted his system? Slightly at best. That is exactly what your second part means. Only slightly adjusting your one plan isn't the way to do it and it showed.

He KNEW they players couldn't do it sometimes and still went along with tactics he knew were subpar because of that. I will always hold that against him.

Ancelotti is a pragmatic. I like pragmatics.
