Bundesliga 2016/17

Dortmund are the only team that can compete with Bayern in terms of talent, but their team is still very young and inconsistent.

The sub has kinda killed our flow. Ribery keeps fecking up attacks.

Edit: Plays a nice one-two as I type

Schmidt is gone tomorrow. Any good replacements out there?

Winter break's table:

1. Bayern 39
2. RB Leipzig 36
3. Hertha 30
4. Frankfurt 29
5. Hoffenheim 28
6. Dortmund 27
7. Koln 25
8. Freiburg 23
9. Leverkusen 21
10. Mainz 20
11. Schalke 18
12. Ausburg 18
13. Wolfsburg 16
14. Monchengladbach 16
15. Bremen 16
16. Hamburg 13
17. Ingolstadt 12
18. Darmstadt 8

Bayern put their foot down on the bundesliga

Well, from our perspective that table looks a whole lot better than it could have been. Even with a poor season half like this one (even considering the circumstances, a point average of 1,6 is nowhere near decent or good), the chances of finishing top 3 are still very high.

What is very evident this season is that the EURO and the International competitions really did a number on the German clubs. 6 clubs out of the top half with low numbers of European International players and no EL or CL. Bar Bayern Munich every International represantive of the Bundesliga underperfrorming.

Bayern, Leipzig and Dortmund look like obvious picks for a top 3 finish. That 4th CL spot seems to be up for grabs though. Is Leverkusen going to storm back, as they've done before in the past? Schalke and Gladbach should already have lost too much ground.
Also worth noting that Hertha has somehow managed to finish the year in 3rd place for the second time in a row. They still have to face Bayern, Leipzig, Hoffenheim, Frankfurt, Dortmund and Leverkusen at home though, so they'll need to win their fair share of away games to avoid yet another collapse towards the end of the season.

My guess is on either Leverkusen or Schalke, there's only three points between them. If it weren't for that horrible start, Schalke would be much higher in the table.

I don't see any chance for Schalke to make top 4 this season, their misfortunes aren't just down to bad luck, they have a massive lack of quality upfront and I haven't seen any signs yet that Weinzierl has a tactical plan to compensate for that. On top of that they also have the distraction from the EL.
I reckon that Hoffenheim, Hertha, Frankfurt and Cologne will all lose steam at some point, so if Leverkusen can find some good form they still have pretty good chances to play CL next season, if not it'll probably turn out to be a snail race.

Dortmund doesn't look that obvious for me with regards to top 3.

Come on now, they have the second best squad in the league by a mile, they've gotten through their injury crisis now and they are only two points behind fourth place, if they weren't so unlucky with refs in the past few matches they probably would be third already, despite not being in such a great shape.

Well Schalke had 0 points after 5 games, then picked up 17 points in the following 7 games before finishing the year off with just 1 point in the final 4 games. Maybe those good 7 games were the anomaly and not the other way round?
Either way they'd have to have to be 12 points better than Hertha in the remaining 18 games, that's a huge deficit to come back from. Even if Berlin somehow messes it up, they'd still have to overtake Frankfurt (11 points ahead) and Hoffenheim (10 points).
Even reaching the top 6 seems like a very ambitious task at this point.

They should be finishing top 3 but they are still so vulnerable at the back IMO.

Holy shit! Another golazo! What a free kick by Hertha. It would be the 8th defeat in a row for Darmstadt.

Yeah it´s like the football gods want to punish Darmstadt for doing it the way every football romantic wants it to be. First the fans have to sit through 13 games of the worst manager/sporting director appointments in years (being inferior in all matches, even being badly outplayed by a 4th division team). Then they finally fire these mugs and in the next three games they create more clear cut chances than Freiburg, Bayern and Hertha, only to be defeated by a horrible referee and two goals of the year. :(

I do really sorry for them. Their rise has been incredibile, from being relegated to the 4th tier in 2013 (allowed to stay up thanks to Offenbach's financial problems) to the promotion to the Bundesliga 2 years later.

They punish them for being a club without resources which made it's way up way ahead of its time. Miracle they even stayed up last year, it was absolutely clear they would go down this season.

It was clear before the season started, but the way the season played out, a proper coach likely has been them at least in 16th place ahead of Hamburg and Ingolstadt right now. Of course if you hire hacks like Meier/Fach you need to be able to burn €30M every year to stay up like Hamburg. Nevertheless it´s hard to take the performances in the last three games, which really deserved 3 to 5 points and compare it to the crap under Meier which also deserved 3 to 5 points in 13 matches.

Hecking new Gladbach coach...

Fun fact...

December 22nd 2009 - Hecking new coach in Nuremberg
December 22nd 2012 - Hecking new coach in Wolfsburg
December 22nd 2016 - Hecking new coach in Gladbach

And yet I associate him with Hannover and am surprised every time I see someone else coach them:wenger:. Slightly uninspiring signing for Gladbach, thought Eberl would do better than that.

Next step Dortmund? :D

No - but you could ask yourself which Gladbach player lands at City next...

I still see Dahoud going to Liverpool. I could also see Weigl ending up at City in a year or two, though as I've said many times, he would be my number 1 signing for us should he become available.

He just signed a new contract until 2021. Weigl is going nowhere in the forseeable future. Earliest the transfer could become a topic would be Summer 2019.

That is what happens in the winter break. A picture of the inside of the Schalke Arena tonight...

This may be interesting for all those users who don't get to watch games. The German sports website Kicker traditionally ranks the Bundesliga players every 6 months. This ranking is purely based on what they achieved during those months, not on their potential.
Those lists are always very controversial but they give a good insight into who performed well. Players who played less than half the games are not eligible for these rankings.

Kicker ratings and their ranks are as cringeworthy as Guardian's Top 100 players or as fan votings.

The only interesting 'ranks' Kicker comes up with are the bi-yearly (IIRC) polls among Bundesliga players themselves.

They're awful as well. It's so weird to ask the players who's the 'loser of the season'. Last season Kampl was third in that ranking behind Götze and Kruse. I still wonder what Kampl has done to piss off the other players in the league to vote for him, even though he clearly improved a lot compared to his season in Dortmund and was actually a pretty important player for Leverkusen with some excellent performances. I don't trust the players at all in these votings, they're all so sensitive and barely anyone votes honestly. Usually the opinion from the journalists is much better even though the quality of football journalism has declined so much (especially at kicker magazine), that it's best to ignore award season altogether.
