Gaming Building a gaming PC

What happens in February? Just a case of getting Christmas out the way or is there something new coming?

In normal circumstances I would be fine with that but i am currently without a pc at all so could do with something sooner rather than later
In February, stock will normalise or at least you'll be able to pick up a gpu handily enough if you look for one. Now, the market is a mess. The gpus NVidia's released are like gold dust. The cpu's amd released are also hard to come by. I'd say in February, most of the parts will be available. Of course you can start building now but it'll probably be a pain waiting on the components you want.

Makes sense. Typical its all a nightmare when I need it!

I assume the mess is mainly just CPUs and GPUs?

Mostly gpus. With AMD's offering coming next week as well.

Well it seems my PC has jacked it in. Have been debating building a new one for ages so I think this has made my decision for me.

My current one is pretty mid range as I did most of my gaming on my xbox but I am debating sacking off the new xbox and joining the dark side and commiting to a really high end PC.

Im I right in saying AMD seem to have took over from Intel for the best CPUs nowadays?

Wait a couple of months and get the ryzen 5600 (non x version).

The whole reasoning behind omission of the non x sku's was that the x chips had very little value proposition last gen so this gen AMD just decided on single variation.

If non x are released then they're going to be released in Q2 2021 by which time one would be able to source x chips for very respectable price.

Amd wants to milk there current dominance, its easier to charge more for a x variant rather than a non x variant. They're being greedy, however according to hardware unboxed we should hear something about 5600 in jan.

I'd rather spend a little more and get the 5900 instead of the 5600x!

I think this thread should be changed to 'Building a PC' or 'PC components help' -- really shit thread titles, I admit but I've seen plenty of post that were not related to gaming per se.

Mostly gpus. With AMD's offering coming next week as well.

To be fair the 3080s / 3090s are pretty common now at a decent price. The discord I went on to source mine had over 20 30 series notifications on EU Amazon just today.

Fair enough but I think we're in perpetual loop of technology whereby we're constantly waiting on the better deal -- sorry, I don't have more eloquent way of putting it. Im sure there is a proper terminology for it.

I think when the dust settles from the ridiculousness of whats been going on in tech world, a potential buyer should have seen all the reviews and will be equipped to make an informed decision and then make that decision - with complete confidence. We're in a very exciting period where AMD look unstoppable in the cpu market and where AMD and NVidia are neck and neck. In my opinion, once there is enough stock of components that are confirmed right now -- I'd go get them. You'll not get buyers remorse for a while.

Where? I have seen 3090's in the wild but not 3080's -- not at msrp. Waay above the msrp. Youd have to be certified to buy a 3080 right now with 6800xt and 6900xt coming out which could be the same price and lower and yet as much as 10% faster. Of course if you take AMD's word for it.

Tell me about it, Ive been waiting for years for intel to upgrade from 14nm. I told my wife the other day i'll be upgrading the pc, she replied that she's been hearing that since we started dating and now were married and even have a kid who started running around.

Im definitely getting the 5900 (im considering 5800x too) alongwith 6800xt (if the gpu benchmarks are right) and a 144hz 1440p monitor.

I'd be confident buying a 3080 now for RTX and DLSS. For pure rasterisation, sure the AMD chip is looking likely to beat it but there's a reason AMD haven't talked about Ray Tracing yet.

I will PM you the invite if you want. About half the links are MSRP and the rest £50 higher from retailers (apart from the odd scalper). I got my FTW3 Ultra at MSRP but it's not the cheapest card anyway being EVGA.

What do you use your pc for? Do you even need those particular gpus? You could get a 5600x and spend extra on ram and gpu.

Agreed. Though NVidia haven't exactly made strides they claim they have. 3070 has the same rt performance as 2080ti according to Hardware Unboxed so NVidia are just brute forcing it. DLSS is amazing though and certainly worth considering more than anything else that NVidia have to offer imo.

Is it UK or can the items be shipped to UK? If they are id certainly be very grateful for that, just to keep my options open if anything. With 6000 series releasing next week I'd still wait though.

I've PM'd you. It's all of Amazon and other sites, but any of the EU Amazon (apart from Germany) will deliver to the UK with the same warranty as the UK

Gaming, photo and video editing. I know 5600x is good enough for gaming, its only a few fps below 5950! I want to future proof aswell, i dont see myself upgrading the next 4 years atleast unless something conks.

I am after a 3070, have you seen any of those around?

Look you're going to upgrade your gpu before you'll update your cpu. You will get fantastic performance out of 5600x. You're talking £550 difference between CPUs. Now, if time is money and you earn your keep through your video editing and photography then of course 5950x - if not - 5600x all the way. Tuck that 550 away until RDNA 3 and further. You'll saturate that gpu before 5600x is the limiting factor.

You raise valid points. I agree.

What are your thoughts on the 5800x ?

Believe it or not, I followed minimal amount of 5000 series performance. This is a mature node and I expected great results. Once I heard 5600x beating 10900k in some games I had heard enough to know that this would be great as was expected. Im intel, so no great interest to me in the short term, only sorrow.

Obviously I heard the pricing etc.

When are you planning on buying your new chip and you have to factor in the cooling and your mobo? Jeez I could sound condescending. I should really watch all the reviews and memorise all the temps, alas, you should check.

All right folks - what to do- buy a new 32 monitor and/or gpu (still rocking a 970 GTX) - or a DJI Mini 2 drone?

In computer please?

Seriously, I've no idea what you're talking about but I'm happy to help.

Thing that shows pictures, thing that sends pictures to thing that shows pictures, or flying thing that takes pictures?
I'm not sure if you're a dj or a stalker.

I forgot how easy it is to go overboard when looking at parts

Decided I'm definitely getting a 3080 when they are more readily available unless AMDs appear to be better value for money.

How important is a motherboard? If your using it solely for gaming do you really need to be spending £300-£400 on a top quality one or will something in the mid £100s do?

I very nearly just whim bought that, was halfway through signing up before changing my mind.

Cheers for the temptation!

It is tempting but over £100 RRP, so unless you are desperate you can wait until stock levels go to normality, well we hope it does eventually.

The cheaper ones will do the job but you won't get all the extra slots and features. Plus if you are overclocking you want one of the more expensive ones.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT use these clowns. I should have known better, but I got a little tipsy and decided what the feck could go wrong, even if it is PCworld. Surely their business side is ok though right??

Wrong. Not only did the website get nearly all my details in the wrong place, but it lies about having stock AND now they send an email saying they have no stock but basically still want to charge me and if I don't reply in 5 days to cancel, they'll only give a credit note.

And lo and behold, I can't contact them. I'm also guessing my local business centre is closed for lockdown too.

Absolutely fecking shysters

Damn, that is shocking. You might want to contact Currys? They are the same company.

I saw the post 2 hours after he had posted it and saw 9 left in stock. Knew then it was some sort of scam.

I mean I kind of guessed there'd be an issue, but I'm not worried as I did it through my company so I have some clout to give them some shit.

Plus if I feel like it after lockdown, I can march into the local curry's business centre and mouth off at the manager pretending to be all important

But what gets me is that already took the money, that's not how it should be done, especially not business to business and at no point prior did they tell me that or even ask for a company number. Proper amateur hour twats!

Still, it's PC world/Curry's, no real shock. And it's probably saved me hassle with the actual card too, so maybe it's a sign.

That's so bad. I got a curry's business account a few years ago by walking into a store to buy a mouse. They asked me if I wanted a business account, to which I replied no as I'm employed and don't run my own business. I was basically told that didn't matter as business accounts are for people with jobs

It means feck all even if you have one tbf mate. For example my business Internet is Virgin Media, and I'll give you one guess if you think it's any better (apart from at least having one account manager to harrass)
