Buffon

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has spoken candidly about his future, saying that he may leave the Turin giants and if he does, England is his favoured destination.

There has been constant speculation over the experienced 32 year-old and there were rumours last month that Juventus' deputy director general Roberto Bettega had travelled to Manchester for talks with both Manchester City and Manchester United over Buffon.

Talking to Italian TV station Sky Sports yesterday, Buffon gave his clearest indication yet that he could move to England.

He said, "My desire to leave Juve is equal to that of Juventus to release me.

"Right now there is nothing, but anything can still happen. It's not fair to say too much right now, but I have nothing to hide. If I had to leave, England could be my destination. Which shirt? I do not know, I have not had any contact with anyone. I have no preferences. "

Manchester City have been linked most closely with Buffon and were he to move to Eastlands, Roberto Mancini hopes that in challenging Shay Given for the number one slot, he would add important experience, particularly if Manchester City secure Champions League football.

Manchester United have also been linked with World Cup winner Buffon. Sir Alex Ferguson is looking for a long-term replacement to take over from veteran Edwin Van der Sar . Ferguson has shown little confidence that either Ben Foster or Tomasz Kuszczak are good enough to take over the Manchester United goalkeeping mantle.

Buffon has won 95 caps for Italy in a distinguished career and is now in his ninth year at Juventus.

<Muppet mode on> Ship out Foster, VDS and Buffon compete for Number 1 spot </Muppet mode off>

Works for me. VdS could be phased out over the course of next season, Buffon could have the number one for another 5 or 6 years after that (he's "only" 32)

Fergie's always been a bit shit at signing keepers but I'd like to think that the success of VdS (combined with Foster making a pig's ear of his opportunities this season) will have brought home the importance of spending a few quid on a seasoned world class pro in nets, rather than taking punts on cheapish young 'uns like Foster, Kusczckak and Howard.

Never mind all the talk about an urgent need for a "creative midfielder", if we sign Buffon that's an absolutely critical position sorted until long after SAF calls it a day. JFDI.

Am I the only one who thinks Buffon is not the keeper he was 1-2 years back? He is extremely injury prone and almost every season he seems to miss like 2-3 atleast of action and he's started making a lot of mistakes and his command of the box is not what it once used to be. Imo I would take Cesar over him.

Oh and there is speculation that Arsenal could be close to signing him (buffon) ?

He's still a very reliable keeper, even if his form and physical conditions are not the same of the past. I think he would be perfect for Manchester United. I kinda appreciate him and if he leaves that horrible scum he plays for at the moment, my estimation for Buffon would be even bigger.

That sounds but someone with reputation of Buffon would never come to a club to sit at bench even for one season or so. GK is not a position where you can get some mins in every other match by rotation or as a sub. We will have to relegate VDS as number two if we signed the Italian.

I was very impressed when he stuck with Juve despite the relegation when he could have gone to absolutely any team in the world

At its heights Buffon was the best keeper in the world. Unfortunately injury and physciological problems had hindered his career. I have mix feelings about this. If we can bring him back to his former glory then we would have a keeper capable to become the best keeper the EPL had ever seen. Stating that consider that Juve will NEVER let him go on cheap then maybe this would be a big gamble to take.

He's young enough still for a keeper to bounce back and he'd be with that team for years. As someone already mentioned though, he won't play second fiddle to VDS.

No one that needs a keeper can afford him so he'll stay. Unless Bayern have a trick up their sleeve!

Wasn't there an issue with his contract and that's the basis of all these rumors? He was quoted saying something in the similar of not wanting to sign a contract because he wanted to explore his options after the seasons. He wasn't 100% satisfied with Juve at the moment and how they handle themselves.

I would pay 15M for him. A keeper like him would still have 5-7 years left in the top game.

Price tag of 20M euros and allegedly wants about 5M euros pa net ie £8.5M gross or over £160K a week.

Manchester united plan gianluigi buffon swap deal

 didnt see that mentioned anywhere.

MANCHESTER United are planning an audacious bid for Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is on the hunt for a goalkeeper after allowing Ben Foster to leave Old Trafford.

Reports in Italy suggest he is about to swap striker Federico Macheda with the Italy goalkeeper.

Buffon last week gave his strongest hint yet that he could move to the Premier League.

He said: "Should I leave Juventus, I think that a move to England would be my next destination."

Would love to see Buffon here, absolutely love it. He's the complete goalkeeper and he's got a good five years in him at least. The only worry is injuries.

He seems to be injured all the time now.

Injuries, massive transfer, massive wages, no resale value.

5 years ago even 25 millon would have been acceptable. Today, I'm not so sure. If we're going to bid over 20 million for a keeper, i'd rather it be a 22-25 year old who we can get on a very long contract (and if it comes to it, someone we can at least recoup some of the transfer fee).

We'd never sell a top class keeper to anyone if we signed him young. Hence possible recoup fees would never be considered.

If we signed Lloris at 22, and kept him for 10 years he'd still be in the prime if say a Madrid came calling (round the time Iker was retiring). I could see a top class keeper move after 10 years for a new challenge. So yes, not only do we need to think about resale value, but we have to factor it in when we splash world record fee's for keepers.

At the end of the day players have just as much power when they decide to move, it's not just the clubs prerogative...history has shown this to be true on more then a few occasions in the last decade.

lloris is 23 isnt he... might be a bit tricky signing him at 22

italian media is claiming that juventus signed sampdoria keeper storari for 4.5 m euros. Apparently they are not very confident about buffon's fitness level. It seems that buffon have not fully recovered from back problems that started 3 years ago

Manchester United intend to buy Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon in the summer, it has been revealed.
Popular Mediaset journalist Gianni Balzarini has revealed United are the only suitor for Buffon, who will move to Old Trafford once he has proved his long-term fitness.
A deal in January will not be considered as United want to see Buffon play consistently before shelling out for the Italy No1 - and Balzarini is adamant the Red Devils are the only serious contender for the player's signature.
The prospect of Buffon remaining with Juve is now remote and it's claimed Marco Storari is regarded within the club as their long-term first-choice.
Buffon is also being urged to make the move to United as they're seen as having better prospects of winning the Champions League in the coming years than Juve.

Man Utd will sign Juventus keeper Buffon once fitness proved | Serie A News | tribalfootball.com#

Tribal Football I know but he would be a great signing. Should we sign him I reckon we could get 3/4 years out of him.

Still in the top 3 for me as best keepers in the World.

But what about the other eight or nine goalkeepers we're buying in the summer? Won't he prefer to go to a club where there's a little less competition for the number one spot?
