Manchester United and Arsenal are on alert after Juventus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon hinted he wanted to leave the Turin-based club.
Buffon, 32 later this week, is rated by many as the best goalkeeper in the world.
But Juventus are struggling in sixth place in Serie A and crashed
He said after being sent-off in the 2-1 home defeat by Roma, their third consecutive loss: 'Always on the counter attack, that's enough, I cannot take it anymore.'
Buffon remained loyal to Juventus when they were relegated to Serie B after the match-fixing scandal. But it seems as if the Italy international is ready to move and at 32 has five or six years left at the highest level.
With Edwin van der Sar 39 and Manuel Almunia never truly convincing, United and Arsenal will watch further developments with Buffon who has played 100 times for Italy.

hmmmmmmm. buffon - yes please!

Edwin Van Der Sar has never truly convinced? He holds an amazing clean sheet record ffs (anyone that comes in here and says it was down to Vidic is going to receive some kind of angry letter from me)

No you misread, he says Edwin is 39 and Almunia not convincing.

EDIT: You beat me to it yourself!

Yeh that sentance could do with a comma, but that's the Mail for you!

I wouldn't be surprised if that was just him snapping because he's sick of losing. They'll probably get Hiddink in soon since their manager must be on the verge of being sacked, and I have no doubt he'll stay then.

How have we been linked with him? Just because there is (possibly) a quality keeper on the market and our current one is aging doesn't mean that we are linked with him. If anything, the media circus should say that we can't afford him since all we are in the news for these days is our debt (and rightly so, we need all the publicity we can get).

That being said, he would be an excellent successor to VDS.

No Value. 32 years old. Will cost a fortune and no resale value when he's finished.

Let me guess, Buffon's contract is coming up for negotiation, if he didn't leave when the went to Serie B, I suspect he's there for life now

I'd rather spend £20m-£30m on a 23 year old Lloris than a 32 year old Buffon!!

For Goalie's, being experienced is vastly more important than being young, especially when you play at United when the game can be boring for tens of minutes at a time and then in a split second you have to make a game-changing save.

True, but being extremely talented and reasonably experienced at only 23 and still having another 12 years or so at the top is also important.

I thought that department was already covered by Foster and PIG.

Can't think who would need him at the moment and would be willing to spend that much. Arsenal would never spend that much, nor would we for a keeper. Chelsea are fine for the moment as are Inter, Barca, and Real. No one else can really afford him...

Times have changed at Juve, don't blame him for leaving. Stayed loyal to the team and now wants to leave.

32 year old keeper is like 25 year old player. 100 caps for Italy  I was never impressed enough to think that he's the best in the world, but he is good enough and if they ask for anything up to 15M, we shouldn't hesitate at all. I hope we don't dilly dally like we did with other top players.

They paid something like 50m euros for him ten years ago (yes 50m euros !), so don't expect United to get him for £15-20m especially with City inflating the transfer market.

We'll never pay £30m for him and I don't expect Juve to sell for anything less than that.

He stayed with them when they got relegated to serie B. Why on earth would he want to leave now? Will retire with the old lady, so it's pointless even talking about it.

If only he hadn't backed out of signing for Milan, they'd have kicked on and would have won more trophies in the last 4 years. They've suffered with Dida. Buffon and Torres would have made them quite a side.

He's only 31!

feck yes I'd have him in a heart beat!

Interesting, I don't think he's quite the best anymore. Who did you rate as the best in the world between 2002 and 2007?

I always had a grudging admiration for Kahn. Casillas was also superb, but I'd say it was Kahn. My problem with Buffon is that he does a lot of ball watching. All keepers do it, but less often. Sometimes it seems like Buffon could save a shot if he put in an effort, but he decides to let the ball roll into the net.
Still, one of the best and had some amazing saves over the years. Would love to have him at United. Goalkeeper is half the team, and we've all seen how much VDS has meant to United. We're missing that stability at the moment.

Yeah I'm a Kahn fan as well. Looking back he's probably a little under-rated nowadays.

He let in a terrible goal against Ajax. Sulejmani shot from a tight angle right through his legs. If this happened to PIG or Foster we'd all be calling for them to be dropped....

Buffon Reveals Painful Truth To City

Gianluigi Buffon, who won four league titles with Juventus, the UEFA Cup with Parma and the World Cup with Italy, has today explained why the best players reject massive Manchester City.

“It doesn’t surprise me that a lot of big players have turned down Manchester City,” said Buffon. “The best players in the world want to be playing for the top teams in the top three leagues, no more than five or six teams in Europe. It’s a very elite list and Manchester City have to accept the fact they are not one of them. I read that City were interested in me last summer. I don’t know if anything was tabled, but there is no way I could have considered it. I couldn’t justify leaving one of Europe’s most famous clubs for a team that are not playing football at the highest level.”
