Sporting isn't going to lower their price. Why would they? They are in mid season doesn't make any sense to sell their best player without a replacement, and we are desperate right now and we are a club with history of massively overpaying players.

That price in this market is not unreasonable. Joao Felix was picked up by Atletico for £113m from the same league. And Fernandes has better numbers in that league.

And we overpaid later for Maguire, paying 80m after refusing to pay 60m for him the previous summer so what.

We'll waste time trying to lower the price then we'll pay what they exactly want when we discover the window is about to shut down and we haven't paid anyone, and Woodward will look like a genius, while in fact he's just a crap negotiator.
 
Briefs are coming out now about threatening to walk away unless they lower the price. Smells more like a tactic at this stage than an admission that the deal is in danger.

Can’t understand the criticism here. Bruno ain’t worth 65 + 15. Have patience. Bruno will kick up a fuss if Sporting don’t budge. A compromise will be made. Like 50 + 15 or something

Because there is no certainty that he will be wanted next summer?

we massively paid for Maguire. 80M for a non WC CB is ridiculous. Bruno is worth 68m euros especially since we're so light in CM. If we wanted to play this game then maybe we shouldn't have dismantled the midfield and brought no one to replace them as we did.

They’ve been trying to pawn him off since last summer. Clubs were apparently interested but not at their asking price. If they want to sell him so bad they need to be realistic.
 
This story feels like every player above 40 mill with us. Every single time, were stalling because of supposed counterprice. Did Woodward expect he was gonna get it at first bid, no negotiating at all? Rinse and repeat.

I doubt his value will drop any lower, his quote price is around half of what Athletic has paid for Felix, in the same league where Bruno has outperformed him. Its not like Sporting is asking for 100m or something.

In trying to defend everything the club does some seem to be an awkward illogical impasse here. When inevitably we do overpay they'll twist and turn to defend that too as per all the other transfers.
 
Funny reading comments criticising the club for "not paying whatever Sporting asks". Us paying ridiculous fees and getting fleeced has been one of the main problem post SAF and exactly why we had an overrated overpaid squad. If we feel Sporting's asking price is too big and they don't accept anything lower, we should walk away.
 
If we think he's overpiced, walk away and start negotiating with other player, but we don't that, we just threaten to walk away trying to convince the other team to accept our offer, a trial that has been tested and failed miserably several times before.

Think he's overpriced ? Ok, go on for another target.

The situation is getting criticized because that what happened in Maguire deal last summer so the problem hasn't actually been solved. We'll end up overpaying for him anyway when we realize they won't accept anything less.

Maybe its time for all season ticket holders to start negotiating with our club in the same way Woodward does on players. Unless we make it to the CL then they should organise themselves and offer the club a take it or leave it 100 pounds per season ticket. Else they walk away. Same thing with merchandise. Most agree that the shirt that is worn by the likes of Shaw, Jones and Lingard is not worth more then a tenner. So 12 pounds would be a fair price.

Sporting are asking for a fair price considering his importance to their team and his stats and performances.
 
Still think it's worth returning to Ed telling everyman and his dog that we can do things in the market other clubs could only dream of.

I don't blame the club for not wanting to match Sporting's asking price, clearly we're not the only club who have looked at Fernandes and decided that it is too much money. What I do have an issue is that it was bleeding obvious to everyone outside of the club and therefore presumably obvious to the club as well that we left the summer window well short in midfield and attack and that we were an injury or two from being in big trouble.

It begs the question why with less than 2 weeks to go of the January transfer window we are still haggling over a player who we briefed in the summer we didn't want because he gives the ball away too much. Why wasn't there a plan in place beforehand to strengthen an area that clearly needed improving?

65 + 15 million euro ain’t a fair price at all. Obviously our owners and CEO agree on that. Good that the club shows some strength in these situations. The level in Portugal ain’t all that. Just look at Felix - a big disappointment so far.
 
I'd personally pass on this deal and sign Soumare from Lille as a DM. Options will open in the summer, and this particular deal with Fernandes wreaks of a panic buy imo.
 
Its a weird strategy by Sporting. They're holding out for more, but can at the same time see there are no other suitors in the current price-range. If they really need the money it's a strange and risky way to go.

Good from United not to bite, just wait it out and see if they're gonna take the original offer in the end in lack of better options. At least we're not just blindly paying/giving in to demands.

We've acted more hesitant to overpay in this case and Wan Bisaka's case, and Thats only good in the long term, so clubs see that they cant just name a price and make us overpay.

Chelsea had Kovacic and Higuain on loan last season and once had quaresma. Bayern currently have Perisic and Coutinho on loan. PSG have icardi on loan and Real borrowed Chicha from us a few years back and before that they had Adebayor

We do overpay, but after wasting time trying to get the price at lower wages, so what's the point ? I don't get the point of this strategy if the result is always the same in one of our transfers under Woodward. Either pay what they want or if you think it's too much, simply walk away and check other targets. Wasting time trying to lower the prices and ending up paying what they want is a weird strategy.
 
We really are not in any position to be picky about the asking price. That being said when Fergie signed somebody for 20 to 30 mil (which was some kind of scale for a big transfer back in the 2000s) we all knew we were getting quality (examples: Rooney, Ferdinand and RVN). If the club feels he's the real deal we shouldn't be penny pinching too much. If not move on and find a suitable midfielder for 40 mil.
Personally I think he is quality and getting him sooner means he will have half a season to grow accoustomed to english football.

Felix is what 19? Impossible to judge right now. 65m is more than fair, it’s what? Close to £50m? Considering we paid that for Fred and Bruno would actually bring us goals and assists, the most valuable thing in football.

We also aren’t in a position to be so picky, we have no midfield and our quality in that position is zero.
