I think United are right to be patient considering how long is left in the window, but the lack of any real noise in any other direction is a concern.

And I agree with you to an extent, but I guess my opinion is this: if United think he is a star in the making, then they should stop fecking around, pay the extra 5-10m, and make sure he doesn't get away. Conversely, if they think he is going to be a decent starter but nothing more, they need to walk away.

Nobody cares about huge fees when the transfers are a success, but United have overpaid for so many average players, it's made other clubs confident that they can squeeze 10-20% more from them than they would otherwise expect.

Agree. Honestly though you’re talking about a club who aren’t looking at football as their priority. Firstly, its being dragged out in the press because that’s what Woodward wants - He’s an egotist. Secondly, every decision at Utd is still going to be based on how much the outlay is versus what will they make by doing the deal. Football fans can look at it and say “he’s an improvement on what you have so just do the deal” but that’s not the way the glazers operate. It’s a secondary consideration and why we will never compete again until they’re gone.

Maybe United should have started the negotiations long before the window started. Our squad is dying for a midfielder ever since Pogba injured. Our lack of urgency is shocking.

It's laughable that people think the club's goal is to improve through spending. Their goal is to lower the costs to increase profits. Is there a reason this club never does incoming loan deals? You have to understand player amortisation. This is an accounting game. And people who just say "walk away" are doing nothing but giving Woodward the cover he desperately craves. It's not about this one transfer...this entire process just highlights how pathetically inept Woodward and Judge are. Realistically, this club needs a DOF and a better coach. It then needs better depth and probably at least 4-5 new starters. But good luck if you think they'll be the right targets (see Longstaff).

Can we not send a player out to them on loan or permanently as a make weight?

It has been since the day they arrived and will continue to be until they are gone.

So are we going to get him or not? Any other targets around. We are so bloody bad in the market that it is insane. Under Mourinho we did better during his first two years before he did fall out with the board.
Not sure if it is the manager or Woodward being incompetent here.

Probably both. Certainly Woodward is incompetent.

I don't think Ole has any input whatsoever at this point, he doesn't do the negotiations. It's all down to the higher ups.

We tried that route but the only players they wanted were ones we needed like Pereira.

It'll be cash or nothing basically.

I thought he’s supposed to be incredible? And we fecking need someone. €80m isn’t the biggest shafting we’ve had is it
If he was incredible we wouldn't be the only ones in for him. We're not loaded anymore either.

He’s a good player that would easily improve the midfield, but he‘s not «incredible».

True, but has he looked for a number of targets to go for a lot?
I will give Woodward most of the blame, but we should have been in the market much earlier.

This means nothing to the owners. We could spend £700m a year on transfers and not break FFP rules, since we're the biggest football ATM in the world.
Third biggest, financially, not the biggest. And our owners are the only ones who neither care for nor understand football

I think the briefings from both sides is to look like they've got the better deal. Sporting say they won't accept €50m and we say we won't pay €80m. The deal will likely be for something like €60m + €10m in reasonably achievable bonuses.

United value him around 50 mil Euro
Sporting Lisbon around 80 mil Euros
they have been asked to lower their price.
appears ole and phelan watched him play and made decision to buy him.

I’m not as convinced by Grealish as some on here clearly. I would like United to sign Maddison, he could be a Becks-like star, hard working, dead ball skills, picking a pass, team player.

Someone is needed in midfield this January, if Bruno is the one, so be it.

Walk away at that price. Not worth it.
The problem is - we don't seem to have an equally good alternative, so walking away would mean fecking us over, in the remainder of the season and consequently in the summer, since good players will see we suck at 8th place and will refuse to sign for us. So we cant really walk away that easily. Same as situation with Maguire, in the summer. If we didnt sign him - we were going to have been fecked

I'd say most of us want Maddison, but the issue to me is how realistic it is. Depends who else is in for him, because you know Leicester are going to ask for a shit ton for him.

I agree with the people saying this is just PR for each club. If they’re truly asking for €80m they can do one.

I can easily see Leicester asking for £100m+ regardless of who else is interested. We could probably end up getting both Fernandes and Grealish for a similar price as it'll take to get Maddison.

Everyone taking United for a ride. Our own fault for spending silly money on others and leaving a precedent. Glad we've finally taken a stand now although very annoying as we can very much do with Fernandes.

We already "took a stand" on him in the Summer. So going for him the second time and failing to negotiate again would just be us being inapt and foolish

If the comment that they were willing to sell to Spurs for so much less is true, then I'm tempted to go with Ed here. Player clearly wants to come, Sporting need the money, it's at a good spot in his career - ticks a lot of boxes.

You expect Sporting to demand a lot, but if walking away is the only means for them to lower the asking then Ed kind of has to. That difference in valuation is enormous and represents a whole other player we could use.

Simple truth is Maddison is never a £100m player. He hasn’t even played for England yet. I wouldn’t even bother trying to sign him with that asking price.

80 million Euros for Btuno Fernandes is far too much to be honest. I do like Maddison but I wouldn't pay more than £50 million for him. Not sure about Grealish either. Having said that both Maddison and Grealish are improvements on our current midfield, especially when ( not if) we lose Pogba in the summer.
