I told fans about Bruno from early but people didnt want to listen. Was told I had an agenda and I should feck off. It's funny because nobody is saying anything different to what I said before (can't pass, makes dumb decisions, is a high volume player , can't carry the ball and play on the half turn etc.. ) yet when I told everyone 18 months ago that he was covering stinkers with penalties everyone had energy for me. You were too busy pulling up the spreadsheets but I ain't seeing any right now.

Why should it take for him to stop getting G/A for you to realize his overall play has always been mediocre?

Because the only way to win in football is with G/A. As long as he delivers, all other stats are just journalism.

Bruno is still a very good player. He passes the ball very quickly and he has a lethal shooting ability. The problem is opponents will figure him out and knows what he likes to do and stop him as far as possible. And Bruno has already done all he could in the past so you cannot expect him to outshine his best season so easily. That's like telling Mo Salah to repeat his 44 goals per season in his first season for Liverpool.

I simply miss him playing as our False 9 type player.

I miss his goals, his passing, his passing causing penalties that he would then take and playing in this weird type of momentum.

guy had a good half a season and it’s nostalgia inducing already?

And people still don't want to listen because it's rubbish. Yes, he is currently on a bad run of form and needs to start producing but by absolutely no means is he this mediocre player you are painting him out to be. On form he is a top quality player.

Oh no, I still value him as one of our best and consistent players.

Its just how I see that Ronaldo scores 6 goals in 5 games in the CL and gets all of the love and attention. Whilst Bruno in the CL provides 6 assists in 5 games and he is talked about as being dissapointment or even overrated - which is just straight weird.

All I miss is watching how Bruno play more as a goalscoring false 9 type player we saw at United and Sporting Lisbon - than watching the more pure creative style player we see play more for Portugal or this season United.

Once the whole team settles in under Ralf, I expect Bruno to become more disciplined and efficient player. There will be less Hollywood passes but more passing between the lines and one twos that will help us keep the ball better. He will no longer will be the artistic creator that we saw when we signed him, but is likely to become a key contributor to an overall improvement in our team play.

Problem is, bar Sancho, we don't really have anyone so, yes, Bruno needs dropping, but for who?
Amad is the closest. He's got that Mahrez / Nasri style of play.

Thats a shame because the entire reason we were thriving is because of Brunos Hollywood flair. Its why he was nominated to the Ballon D'or.

They were right, you did have an agenda. You were proved wrong time and time again. It took 18 months for your argument to hold any validity, once he regains form it might take another 18 months for your argument to have any basis to it.

This. He just needs to settle down. At the moment he doesn't seem he clearly understands his role. He no longer needs to be the creator (which, let's be honest, fecked half our game play because he was playing high risk) and that's fine by me.

Another thing he needs to drop is the fecking prima donna attitude when he messes up. He's exactly like Lukaku, he makes a mistake and then starts complaining like a virgin kid. It's so annoying to watch and, a time will come when someone(even a United player) will fecking slap the shit out of him.

One thing that really sticks out with Fernandes' game: he is a really crap dribbler. Rangnick's system as @Yagami alludes to in his post is exemplifying this weakness rather than covering it. He completes 0.73 dribbles per 90, which puts him in the 7th percentile for attacking midfielders / wingers (Fbref.com).

Comparison to similar-ish players to him in the league, it seems most are dribbling double what he does:
  • De Bruyne completes 1.63 per 90;
  • Havertz 1.41;
  • Mount 1.44;
  • Odegaard 1.06
  • Bernardo 1.68;
  • Benrahma 2.35
Not only this, but all of these players are in the 80th+ percentile for 'Progressive Carries' (which supposedly translates to carrying the ball at least 5 yards when in the middle or final third). Meanwhile, Bruno's progressive carries is in the 54th percentile.

Basically - he doesn't dribble a lot, and even when he does, he's not dribbling and carrying the ball forward a lot. Which, when you watch Fernandes, actually makes sense. He does almost everything first time, or he'll completely stop the ball and try an ambitious pass or shot.

This is a good point actually. I have not seen Bruno dribble much. Wonder if this weakness in his game will be worked on or will Rangnick just tell him to keep it fairly simple without having to dribble or rsort to hollwood passes when a simple through ball is on.

Most chances created in PL and 3rd most in expected assists, but somehow he was never good enough as per few.

Its crazy.

I don't know where it came from but, increasingly, I'm hearing that 'Bruno is a problem.' It honestly shocks me. Pundits, commentators, the influence they have over people's thinking is incredible. I really didn't believe people took lessons from TV. However, the way people are turning on Bruno has shown that I'm wrong.

The idea that Bruno hasn't done it this season, which seems to have started with Talksport or whatever, has just caught on. No amount of facts and figures seem to convince people that Bruno remains quality. Its baffling.

Top assister in the Champions League, top chance creator in the Premier League and people are genuinely saying we'll be better without him. :wenger:

How can he work on that when he can't dribble? Few players can just do quick feet but poor ball carriers.

Also dribbling is just one part of the game, there are many players who don't dribble but have very good impact on the game.

You can learn to dribble without extra fancy stepovers, just as you can learn to carry the ball forward better. I believe I never said that dribbling is be and all in impacting a game either. Bruno has himself shown that you can create something without having to dribble much. My question was whether he will improve his dribbling or ball carrying skills or will he not. Our coaching staff will have their say in this.

Bruno does have to look after the ball better but the bigger problem is surrounding him with more of the same.

You can have one guy being a bit loose if he's racking up goals and assists. What you definitely can't have is three or four others next to him with the same weakness.

All comes back to that problem of players who don't compliment each other.

Needs to learn composure. Can't be Hollywood all the time.
Sometimes being composed and doing the basics right gives you that shot of confidence you need.
Looks like he also needs a break. Bring in Donny to replace him alongside Sancho.

Dribbling was never Bruno's game and no matter what he does, he won't have that. He doesn't have the acceleration within first few steps, doesn't have physicality to carry the ball.

He’s still a genius for me but he’s in terrible form at the moment. Still, a lot of assists this season in the CL, but his general play has regressed. Probably needs a long rest.

Disagree completely. You can carry a ball without having a huge frame and you can dribble while not being amoung the fastest. Juan Mata could do it, so I am sure Bruno can too.

Bruno averages more dribbles than Mata.

Mata completed 0.9 dribbles per 90 mins in his career
Bruno completed 1.1

Acceleration is very important, you don't need huge frame but you need acceleration. If you don't have acceleration then player should have physicality like Pogba. Bruno lacks both.

Could Mata carry the ball or not?

Not better than Bruno if that's the answer you are looking for.

Forget professional player, even a Sunday league player can carry the ball, to what level is the discussion.

Bruno can pass, otherwise he wont have the assists he gets. He is a creator, he wants to create, which is why people get frustrated. Can't play on the half turn? I have seen plenty of goals where he has flicked it and started a counter attack or played the ball on the turn for rashford to run onto.

Without Bruno, we would not be where we are. He has a bad spell and people are writing him off as if he is one of the worst players. He's still created the most chances in the PL btw.

If you think Bruno lacks composure... just watch his penalties.

Totally disagree again. Bruno is dribbling at 0.73 per 90 minutes which can definetely be improved upon. Same applies to carrying the ball. KdB is just 2 cm taller and 1 kg heavier. Built pretty similar, I would say. And yes, one can improve his/her acceleration as well ball carrying skills. Shield the ball better, time the run better, improve close control of the ball which all takes a lot of practice of course. With right coaching, I expect his stats to improve, which again, is quite realistic and doable.

Yup. Well, complement, that is. I'm sure they all talk about how lovely Ronaldo's abs are and Telles' lush head of hair in private.

We have a lot of talented attackers who are all very similar, nobody really works as a foil. That's not an individual criticism to Rashford, Ronaldo, Fernandes, Greenwood etc. Go a little further down the pitch in midfield and nobody really wants to control build-up either. Add in a RB who doesn't know how to trap the ball most of the time and it carries on! Shall we keep going? Add in a keeper who's glued to his line and isn't that great at distribution.

I think that kind of sums up the side, really. They're pretty good on an individual basis but as a collective entity our team is very haphazard. Basically what Rangnick has to fix in 6 months. Good luck fella.

He has been off form now. He has been carrying this side. Yes he lost too many against Norwich. But he is the only one who is trying to defend and attack. Maybe if others take some responsibility from him, he can be more better. I would like to see him play with DVB for a couple of games and Sancho and Ronnie up front.

I think the issue right now is himself and not the team

Nobody listened to you because you went conspicuously quiet whenever Bruno played well. It was as annoying then as your I-told-you-so revisionism is now.

I'm not convinced he's a winner. And will take United to glory. But time will tell.

I think he loses the ball too much and his composure and discipline when the chips are down is questionable at best.

He's had a poor season generally and deserves to be dropped.

When Ronaldo retires all eyes will be on Fernandes at 30 years old to lead this team to glory. Can he rise to the challenge or buckle under the pressure?

I guess time will tell if he was a bottling Tottenham Hotspur player or a Manchester United one.

This is why he needs a a manger to coach him into a more disciplined role. All those players you mentioned are wide players or attacking mids who can play/now play more centrally - they are more dynamic, more naturally technical whilst dribbling and naturally probably a bit more mobile which is one of Bruno’s weaknesses as he’s not exactly fast.

He’s a player who loses the ball 9/10 times on a riskier pass and you have to ask yourself is that worth the risk trade off? When he arrived it worked, more recently it hasn’t but what I think everyone can see is the talent, work ethic and he just needs consistency. He’s been playing in an unstructured team where Ole basically said ‘do what you want’ but he needs a set position. Same as players like D Silva at City, despite people lauding Pep I think many forget Pellegrini’s involvement in getting the players who were the spine of that team to a new offensive level, look at his last season stats with Pellegrini, same for KDB, in a disciplined setup they really became elite attacking players.

If you remember that Pogba goal against West ham where Bruno ran with the ball and assisted Paul with that one touch curved ball

When was I proved wrong? We have done nothing but fail and bottle trophies since he arrived.

Are you talking about Bruno?

Tell me why Ronaldo gets praise for scoring 6 or 5 goals in the CL - but then Bruno gets bashed for providing 6 or 5 assists in the CL?

Absolutely rubbish. All you talk about is Ronaldo, the person you give praise for all his goals in the CL and Bruno has the same amount of assists that Ronaldo has in goals.

6 assists in 5 games.

Rubbish season my absolute arse.

It's fair to say the hail mary approach from Ole has made Bruno a worse player unfortunately.

I'm sure though with a more controlled approach he will get back to doing what he did best.

I don't think the arrival of Ronaldo has helped either, he's probably trying too hard to please him.
