Yes. Not his best day. Thought both him and Shaw seemed off their game, one trying too hard and the other not trying hard enough.

Yea Shaw was off it today too. One of those games for him, few off moments. Williams simply hasn’t learnt the defensive side well enough yet, and will likely have more of these games for a little while than Shaw will. Still learning the trade.

Sadly going backwards now. Too many mistakes and not reading the game well enough. Could put up with him being poor in attack but now his defending has gone as well.
Really looked good when he first came in but at the moment he's more likely to be targeted by the opposition as a weak link.
Still time on his side though and I hope he proves me wrong.

Still not a single minute played on the right......For a young lad that is heavily reliant on his right foot. It quite frankly baffles me.

Surely it makes sense to at least see what he can do on the right side? Maybe this Thursday we give AWB a rest and let Brandon play, either at RB if we're in a 4 or at wing-back if we decide to be more defensive away from home.

I trust Brandon to bring more than Dalot, both defensively and offensively.

Glad to see this is no longer relevant!

He played on the right! And he did well! For some reason I quickly forget how young he is when he's out there. He is doing very well for us.

Hopefully Dalot and TFM see this as a challenge and up their games. Competition can only help the squad.

This season is an ease-in time. I'm pretty satisfied with his performance in general. At the very least, it looks like he can turn into a decent squad player.

Which is nice, because he's still young and has plenty of time to develop. And he has good attitude and mentality.

Anyone know what was his only assist? I went through all his matches just now (as I didn't remember he had one), I still couldn't remember & figure it out.

Won a penalty vs. Partizan too (which Martial converted)...

Whether that counts as an assist depends on the system — typically not in actual football or official Opta stats:
Goal Assist
The final touch (pass, pass-cum-shot or any other touch) leading to the recipient of the ball scoring a goal. If the final touch (as defined in bold) is deflected by an opposition player, the initiator is only given a goal assist if the receiving player was likely to receive the ball without the deflection having taken place. Own goals, directly taken free kicks, direct corner goals and penalties do not get an assist awarded.

But definitely for FPL (or most other fantasy leagues):
When a goal is scored direct from a free-kick or via a penalty, the player who drew the foul will gain an assist.

Watching this video and just realizing how amazing our academy is. We didnt have to spend 60m on a bust like cancelo like those guys next door and thats all thanks to our academy. The kid is fearless and can dribble which are attributes I like in a modern day fullback. he also provides a lot of energy in attack consistently. Credit due to Ole for giving him a great run in his first season. I just want to see more of him. I honestly prefer his aggression in attack to Luke but luke is the better player/defender right now. Great competition for Luke and also cover for AWB given he can play both wings.

The McTominay full back.

Grit, determination, good technique and overal game intelligence but most outstanding attribute is mentality.

He will do well to follow in the Scot's rise to the first team.

He’s brilliant, love him. He’s still not ready to play week in week out, but may be when he turns 21 or 22, he'll be ready to be our regular left back.

Yeah he’s been great this season and managed perfectly by Ole, props to him. He’s gonna be great in the future, still only 19.

I’d much prefer a left footed left-back personally. He has potential but for width and consistent quality delivery from the left, I think full backs should be on their strongest sides.

I have seen him cross with his left and keep the width. He will improve further in the next few years.

I am not saying he will develop as well as TAA but he himself showed signs of developing to a good but with hardwork and coaching has taken him to a world class talent.

I am not saying William will be this level but he can be a very good full back and we have to hope he gets the right coaching and environment to develop.

Trent is an extraordinary talent. It has of course been applied, but he’s not one of those ‘hard work’ stories in football.

And he’d be half the player if he played left-back.

Klopp himself said it he is surprised how TAA has developed. Further he got his chance as result of injury to Clyne which allowed him to be the player he is now. Furthermore Klopp's game play suits the full back as they have the cover from the midfield when they're attacking.

TAA defensive frailties will be enhanced if he had been playing for United.

I have seen William play lobbed through balls, crosses with his left and right foot and also able to dribble past players.

He has more talent then you give him credit for. I am not saying he will be what TAA is, but if he has same amount of game time and coaching level I am sure he can be a very good full back.

Fair enough. I’ve said before, but I think Ethan Laird is a much bigger talent personally. Football is all about taking chances though, and Laird has been injured, and we have been more stable on the right than the left. But he’s as talented a young fullback as I’ve seen, Trent levels for me.

I agree that Laird has more natural talent. But talent only takes you so far. You need a bit of luck and a lot of dedication too. Just look at Robertson at Liverpool. He is a bit similar to Williams as a player.

Williams strenght as a fullback is on the ball. He is a good passer, quite a good dribler and has good movement in the last third. Specially for a 19 year old. As a defender, he needs to improve quite a lot. And he probably will improve a lot in all areas.

What I do like about him is that he is good on the ball abillity, looks very promising physically (size, pace and stamina) and has a brilliant attitude (needs to watch his temperament). And at 19 he has so much time to improve.

Very unlucky this season stopped. Another 1000 min would have been great for him.

Easily, Laird is an absolutely ridiculous talent. Needs to get past his injury issues though.

great advert for our academy. Wears the shirt with pride. Shows great tenacity and has bags of talent and potential. He has been managed well by Ole too. Looking forward to more of him.

Of course Laird is more talented, he is the reason that Williams was shifted to LB as Laird was so good. The fact that Williams did not see it as a set back, but as a challenge speaks a lot of his mentality, and it is one of his biggest strengths.

Laird is versatile too, I have seen him slot in to CB and LB without any problem and look comfortable, but at RB he really looks like a monstrous talent and one of the best we have. He does need to get over his injury problems though, as it worries me with the constant set backs. Injuries are the worst thing for a young player at such a crucial point in their development. I think he would have had a lot more minutes if he had not gotten injured again as it looked like Ole wanted to ease both of them in the squad.

In any case, having Williams as a back up player is fine for now as that seems to have lit a fire up Shaw's ass as well and he really picked up his performances as well, and Williams should improve himself as well, especially once he fills up a bit more physically. Think if Shaw can just stay fit, then we have no need to worry about the FB position any time soon.

Excellent first season. He will only get better from here but he has the tools to get there to be one of the better LB's about.

With speed and fight being key attributes. I also love his willingness to sneak in far post, however has to work on end product when getting there.

2 games with 5 subs, Shaw being subpar and still 0 minutes for him, not even with the win settled

I wouldnt say Shaw has been subpar, but regardless of that, you normally dont a settled back four, unless forced to.

That, and we have loads of other players that need the minutes, too.

As others have said, he will definitely start on Saturday.

For what reason does Andreas Pereira need minutes?

In case Bruno gets injured.

You're kidding? In that case, we play Pogba there, and if he isn't available we play Mata, and then Gomes, and then Grant. Pereira isn't needed, for anything. Not that I'm complaining much but he obviously should've let Williams played a few minutes instead to get him going.

If he'll definitely start, why not give him some minutes before that to build up fitness?

For what reason does Andreas Pereira need minutes?
Maybe he can score another lucky goal and some silly club come and buy him. That's the only reasonable reason I can think of.

I made it quite clear before when I said unless forced, managers don't really like to mess with their back line. We kept another clean sheet against Sheff Utd, and a big part of that is down to our settled back four.

I can imagine Williams will play the full game vs Norwich on Saturday.

Was hoping he would have come on at some stage yesterday as I felt Shaw somewhat laboured through the game.

I thought that too, then wondered if Ole might think Shaw is one of those players who needs as many minutes as possible in actual matches to get fully fit? (like Rooney)

Could possibly be the case with Shaw. I feel Williams would have injected some much needed pace and energy down our left which was sorely lacking.
