Borussia Dortmund 15/16

Could someone tell me who started the general EL thread for this round (I assume it exists), so I can un-ignore them?

I don't have anyone on ignore and can't find a thread like that.

Am I imagining it or does Hummels look like he lost a bit of weight? Always looked fairly heavy and now looks really slender.

Didn't he say that he eats when he's frustrated and that's why he gained weight last year?

@AltiUn, i feel like the odds were in your favour.

NAILED IT

ps. also i missed the match and wow, what the hell was going on there? i just watched some highlights on youtube...

btw, how did the likes of castro, bender, ginter and/or kampl fare, "objectively" speaking? also paging @Sphaero here, as i've just read into the collective stupidity that are match-day comments on tm.de, and now feel much dumber than before... the hive mind seems to have deemed either of them as utterly useless, if not downright hazardous.

in hindsight, and without having watched the whole match, the starting XI looks like tuchel tried to forcefully appease too many of those players who had mostly been left out in the recent competitive matches?

Well Castro had a really bad game as right back as far as I can tell. Ginter as a CB also not the best of games, stability only came with Sokratis coming on at half time. Weidenfeller was an absolute mess, that free kick should have never gone in and he was looking shaky throughout the entire game. Bender did an honest job like most of the times but I can't shake the feeling that the injuries have taken something out of his game and Weigl atm simply looks the better option. Kampl was also quite disappointing I have to say, after a fairly good start in Dortmund I haven't seen much from him that suggest he is actually a good addition to the squad.

All in all I can't really say any of the backup players really took the chance to impress and push for a starting role. Bender was probably still the best of them because he did a solid job but currently I don't see him getting past Weigl if the young lad can keep up his form of the first few weeks.

When did that happen? I thought he looked like a headless chicken without end product from the start. They should get rid of him if someone is willing to buy him for half of what Dortmund paid. I don't think he's good enough to be a rotation player at Dortmund.

Well I thought in his first couple of games that he wasn't too unskilled a player but what you say is certainly true he seemed to be a bit of a headless chicken and going more by instinct than anything else.

Good to see Shinji in the thick of things. How is he doing ?

Looks pretty sharp again. I think it's actually the first time I see Kagawa, Henrikh and Reus all three working really well together. Especially last season it felt like they were just falling over each others feet but this season the play between those three and Aubameyang looks really excellent.

Still the old weakness with their sometimes shit finishing against smaller teams seems to be still around.

Glad he went back to Dortmund, as he seemed to be quite popular there under Klopp. I'm sure he'll have a successful rest of his career there as well.

Looking forward to Aubameyang's development this season.

I think he will profit a lot from the three guys behind him finally working really well together. I'm also keen of seeing what he can do. I think I underrated him for quite some time, thought he was a slightly better Odonkor but his alround play actually doesn't seem so bad atm.

His allround-play kinda sucked in 13/14 which was his first season at Dortmund. He got better in 14/15 so I hope he can progress further this season.

He was Odonkor 2.0 in his first season at Dortmund. He just made the development Odonkor never did.

I think he's looking decent. He's always offering a passing option for his team mates and then handles the ball and passes very quickly and cleanly, which is probably very important to keep the rythm flowing and of course he's showing the occasional glimpses of brilliance, but he's not as dominant as he used to be before his move to United.
Atm Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang are stealing the show at Dortmund. The Armenian was already getting better towards the end of last season but since Tuchel took over it's like he just flipped a switch and decided to show everything they were hoping for when they signed him, his decision making was one of his biggest weaknesses imho (dewlling to long on the ball, taking on opponents when he should pass, trying difficult chips etc when there was a safer option) and now he's suddenly getting these things right most of the time. His shots were never really bad, most of the time qutie close but he barely scored, now he's sitting at 7 goals and 3 assists after 5 games, with one goal taken from him by a faulty offside decision and I think he even hit the woodwork a couple of times. It's like they signed a new player.
Aubameyang seems to have made another step in his development too. Scoring a lot and (probably even more importantly) showing up in midfield to support his team mates.

I know it's been a couple of games and most of them against weak opponents, but their offense looks really exciting and I think a lot of it is a genuine improvement.

He was Odonkor 2.0 in his first season at Dortmund. He just made the development Odonkor never did.

I think the Odonkor comparison weren't justified even in the beginning. He was among the top scorers of Ligue 1 for two years before he moved to Dortmund.
And even in his difficult first season at Dortmund he at least showed that he can score a lot of goals. I think he was also misused since Klopp always played him on the wing with a lot of defensive duties. Still his improvement is remarkable, especially since he's not in his early 20s anymore.

I did talk about his first season at Dortmund and I always liked Auba, so don't take my comment the wrong way. Odonkor actually wasn't that bad in the beginning. He wasn't a good finisher, fair enough, but he was still a great talent, who created a ton of chances in 05/06 and was kinda rightfully called up for the World Cup. Everything went downhill for Odonkor afterwards of course, while Auba looks like he's getting better and better and better. But that was my point ;).
