Bonucci - Juventus player

Bonucci is another example of Juventus being run by very smart people. Buy him at 23 after he's gotten a bit of experience and proved his quality but before he becomes really expensive. Get all his prime years and then sell him for a large profit when he's old and not got much left. The amount of successful transfers they have made over the last decade puts almost every other club in the world to shame.

I'd have him all day.

We need a calm experienced player who can play a pass back there. Hence why I thought we wanted the Belgian lad at Spurs. Was bizarre when we were linked with more young unproven central defenders we have a boat load at the club already

You can't spell it can ya?

I would prefer of buying the next best thing before they move to a top club and become unavailable for a long time, one of De Ligt or Pavard for me. Rojo and Jones should move on, buy Bonucci or Toby and one of the younger lads, loan out Lindelöf to a Premier League side.

Smalling, Bailly, Pavard/De Ligt and Bonucci/Toby for next season. Lindelöf coming back in a year after having 35 games in the PL and getting to grips with the league better.

I can see him leaving, he joined for the Renaissance project, but it's going down the shit hole - I imagine based on his career to date he isn't the type to sit on a big contract when the sporting project doesn't match it.

Inter seem set with defenders, leaving just Napoli as an option - so a move abroad could be a possibility.

Why did he Juve, was he on the decline?

Call me naive but I dont buy that Bonucci became a poor footballer in the course of a couple of months. He is 31. Not 35. But like all players he needs to play in a well organised team that manage to get the best out of him.

I’m not entirely sure I buy the rumours (they dont have much substance, do they?), but he certainly has some of the abilities that we lack. Furthermore, could he «help» Pogba?

There's not a clear picture, but the main thing seems to be he wanted a change of scenery - maybe a nice way of saying more money.

I always wondered why he left Juve especially when he had a good understanding with Buffon, Chilleni, Barzagli etc.

I prefer Alderweireld ( I copied the name from google) to him, but Bonucci is still a good defender with a leading character and calm personality and with fast Bailly playing with him we'll be fine.

Bringing in Bonucci will put us in a better position to negotiate for Toby. We could sell a couple of players and bring in both.

One is enough, and sell Jones. Thus we'll have one experienced CB in his 30, a reliable defender as Smalling with 2 young players (Bailly and Lindelof) and one inconsistent (Rojo). Save money for other transfers.

The good thing about Bonucci is that he's cheaper than Toby (thanks for giving me the hint for calling him that instead of going to google every time !)

You are probably right, but we could sell two out of Jones, Rojo and Smalling in my opinion as neither is good enough (imo). Bailly, Lindelof, Bonucci, Toby and one more should be more than enough for two positions.

Imagine having two players that can actually play out from the back in central defence. Few fun facts about their passing;

- Toby, on average, played 67 passes per 90 last season. 86 % completion. 79 % going foward. Average length of 26,1 meters on each pass.
- Bonucci played 55. 85 % completion. 85 % going forward. Average length og 24,1 m.
- Chris Smalling played 41. Completion of 88%. 76 % moving forward. Average length of 19 m.
- Phil Jones 47 passes. 91 % completion. 75 % moving forward. 18,55 meters on average.

This signing would remind of the time SAF signed Laurent Blanc.
Won a title with Blanc to be fair. Remember him being old but still decent enough.

Think Bonucci would be fine provided it's short-term and he's got somebody mobile beside him (Smalling/Bailly).

I have no problem with replacing Rojo with someone better, the only problem is money, as Toby will cost a lot and if we spend nearly 30m on Bonucci, there's no need to splash 40-50m on another CB in the same window, while we need money for other positions.

Yea, exactly this. Out swuad needs one or two experienced heads, especially at CB.

this guy next to either of the Uruguayans = more free kicks against us in a month that everyone else all season

seriously thought those two Uruguayans are almost as good as Rio

Fairly reliable Italian source:

Manchester United offered €32m for Bonucci, PSG is interested too [La Repubblica]

Bene. Bonucci is just the sort of CB we need. I watch a lot of Serie A with my Dad (an old Italian who still claims it is the best league in the world:lol:) and have seen Bonucci play in person quite a few times.

He's not your typical Italian defender, yes he is fairly strong, he doesn't lose many headers, and he is skilled with the ball at his feet. His reading of the game and anticipation are absolutely second to none. He isn't top of the stat leagues for tackles won, but he doesn't need to be.I also think his reading of the game means he will get better with age. He normally leaves the dirty work to Chiellini or Barzagli. Interesting to note that Guardiola said Bonucci was one of his favourite players ever, emphasising the type of player that Leonardo is.

His defensive positioning is so effective that he doesn't need to win most headers or tackles, he simply positions himself in the right place and intercepts when appropriate. He is great at sheperding players away from the danger area and herding them out of play, something I have noticed our defenders often f*ck up. He also is capable of scoring goals at very important times and can play great through balls (his one against Belgium in the euros was spectacular.) He would be perfect in a back 3, if that is what Jose is looking to do, and I think having a world class CB like Bonucci would affect the development of Bailly, Rojo, Lindelof and Shaw fantastically.

Really hope we get him

On form, he's the best ball playing CB in the world. I prefer Alderweireld but if Alderweireld would cost almost double, it makes sense.

Would be like when we signed Blanc. Not sure we should be getting an aging defender from Italy. The lesgue will be too quick for him to adjust now.

Bonucci vs Alder isn't even close to be fair. Bonucci is quite a bit better. Yes, he has a quite poor season, but when on form, I would say that only Ramos and Godin are better CBs.

His age might be a bit of a problem and after players turn 30, you never know how fast they might decline. On Rio's case he went from still terrific (2012-2013) to bad in the next season and abysmal in 14-15. Bonucci is 31, so he should have another 3 good years, but you never know. Still for 35m euros, it is worthy to try it.

I think we will move to a back 3 if he comes, and we might even push hard for Perisic again to be our LWB in a 352. Will allow Lukaku, Sanchez, Martial and Rashford to rotate as part of a front two, gives our young CBs someone to look up to and model after, while freeing up Pogba and our midfielders to push up higher the pitch. Won't be surprised to even see Matic drop into the LCB position at times and have a midfield trio of Fred, Pogba and Lingard.

It will surely mean the end of our chase for a RW though, which I don't mind since there are so few good options out there that we can sign. Unless Bale or Dembele become available, I can see why we may want to shift to a 352.

How this guy lost his reputation so quickly here on caf? 12 month ago he was best defender in the world and now he is "meh"?
For me, he is still the best defender and for 32 mil( the same price as lindelof!!) we should sign him today. Bonucci-baily pair
