BluRay wins?

That just leaves Dreamworks, Paramount and Universal who have another year on their deal with Toshiba to run I think.

Yep (Universal were HD-DVD from the beginning and were not timed exclusive I think - they may now consider supporting both), but I now wonder what Toshiba are going to try to do here. This was the situation before the Warner announcement.

I can't see Toshiba simply letting it go, but what can they do? They must be kicking themselves for not stumping up some cash for Microsoft to release a high-end XBox with HD-DVD built in. If the rumours were true that they were in discussions about producing such a device, or that one is currently in prototype form, what are they going to do with it when there will be no content for it? Are Toshiba going to try and push HD-DVD to be the dominant PC optical disc media? I saw an LG internal combi reader/writer drive the other day, CD/DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray for €399. That's less than 300 quid for a disc writer drive.

This also will raise concerns at Microsoft themselves. Neither the XB360 or PS3 are anywhere near mass market penetration when you consider the amount of PS2 units that were shipped. There is a huge number of people that as prices drop again this year will be looking at buying a console. Many of these people will also be looking at buying a HD movie player, and many will only have the cash for one.

Lets be honest though. blu ray and ps3 are dependant on each other so much. One without the other would mean death to both imo. Such as people are only buying a ps3 as it is the best blu ray DVD player. Also that chart depends on what films have been out at the moment. You are not going to buy a crap film. Blu ray has the better films at the moment and it does not look like its going to stop but then again, this is common with the Xbox and PS3 debate...the better games will always have better sales.

although i have both and will be dissapointed that the HDDVD addon will become pretty useless, im glad it looks like the "war" is ending

From a technical standpoint Blu Ray is superior to HD-DVD.

It would be a bleak day for the consumer if Bluray didn't win this war.

Sorry if this is a silly comment but does that mean that they will stop producing standard def DVD's? Or will they continue to produce standard def for a while and finally stop like with the VHS.

Standard def DVD's will be around for a good few years yet mate.

Warner are just dropping HD-DVD production to concentrate on Bluray and standard def DVDs.

Technical you mean the storage capacity? Only that. I like HD-DVD because it has more fixed standards, that's why it does everything that it says on the box including the HDi. That said it's about time that one format dies so that we can happily go to one format despite that format being the less good one!

WHAT?:wenger: So the Bourne series is bad... The reason Blu-ray is up there it's because PS3 is the cheapest and most popular Blu-ray player available.

Only that? It's not only that! Take bitrate for starters, the BD standard supports a much higher bitrate than HD-DVD.

Yes, you're right, I forgot about that, but does it really matter NOW as in todays use of VC-1? And doesn't it need the support of the player itself?

Fixed standards? You mean that they don't keep on improving it? That's your bad luck if your daft enough to buy a player that cannot have its firmware updated, sorry!

Come on, that's a good thing. They keep improving because the players are not good enough. Anw, I don't want to get into this debate. Let the bad format win!:p

Great, seeing as I have just got a bluray player. Will be up and running on Wednesday with a couple of discs coming to try out. Planet Earth and Queen at Montreal. Cant wait.:)

Planet Earth is awesome.

Anybody that owns a bluray player needs this in there collection its stunning.

Wonder how much Sony paid for this, anyone reckon MS might go with a Blu-ray drive in its 360?

I don't think that they paid anything in terms of cash. They may have agreed certain terms with allowing Warner fully into the BDA.

The 360 doesn't even have a HD-DVD drive other than a €200 add-on, and it only plays movies, no games come off it.

I love it when you add all those details and answer questions so extensively!:p

I have a HD TV but a normal JVC DVD player....would it play a HD DVD?

The DVD player? No, but you can invest in the future by buying those double sided HDDVDs with DVD on the one side and HDDVD on the other.

How many of you lot use BlueRay (stand alone or PS3) for films?

And is it true that they upscale standard DVDs a bit? And if so, is it noticeable?

For 4 BRay only 1 HD DVD is sold

says it all really

I'll try to buy a ps3 next summer because I've already bagged a xbox 360
recently.

I see loads of people on the net moaning about this, that HD movies on discs are finished, it's now all too expensive, and they will not buy a BD player until they go below $200, yes 100 quid. Where the feck did these people buy their HDTVs from, because I'll have 6.

Isn't it a standard, not for the codec, but generally. Isn't the bitrate a standard and doesn't the player have to support it? At 2x speed does it matter?

Microsoft state basic "standards" for the bitrate required for average playback at each resolution. It does not mean that you can not up it, just like MP3. You up the bitrate, you get better quality, providing that you have the space to store it in, because by upping the bitrate and thus the quality you also up the storage requirement. Also, with the size and bandwidth BD offers, you can get lossless audio compression.

Hmm, good for us. When do you think HD-DVD will die completely in terms of the film industry?

I don't have a clue. CES starts tomorrow, half of the other studios could go the other way, all because two companies could not talk to each other, yet the same two work together like hell in areas such as semiconductors. It's called a madness.
