Bluemoon goes into Meltdown

Its funny reading Ozzie Utd fans talk about JCL's

I don't for a second claim to be some "top red", but please don't question another LEGITIMATE supporter's support being less than yours or someone else's. Gloryhunters? Different story, but what you're insinuating is that every Australian, Manchester United supporter is a glory hunter/JCL and not "legitimate". Sure there are some gloryhunters, and rightfully have a crack at them, but are you suggesting every supporter of United that lives in Australia isn't as "big" a fan as you?

Don't see what's so "funny" about Australian United fans talking about JCL's.

Born and bred Manc though, so maybe I now fit in your exclusive clique?

I don’t for a moment think your support is in anyway less than mine.

But we support a club with a huge amount of bandwagon fans. I see no issue with that. Just like I see no issue with new Chelsea or City fans. IT always happens when a club starts to become successful.

My issue is for the likes of us to laugh about JCL's who have adopted newly successful sides when the exact same thing happen with Utd in the early 90's and beyond.

I see you guys are back again at telling everyone what to do.

Yep, I was really telling him what to do wasn't I? :wenger:

I was just pointing out that it's rich of people to harp on about Chelsea/City supporters being 'plastic' when many United supporters jumped on the bandwagon when we were winning titles/European Cups.

It's what happens - success brings glory hunters, and I'm fine with that - they buy the shirts and financially support the club.

I was a gloryhunter, there is no doubt but at the same time I was young (10 years old).I don't feel as much as a match goers can feel in terms of support levels but I love United.

A glory hunter is someone who only supports the team in times of prosperity and success.

There are of gloryhunting reds even in manc, as well as blues. You wouldn't believe how many people I know who a couple of years ago would say "i'm not really into football" now claim to have been a die-hard blue for the past 30 years.

Wherever they are from, the acid test of a genuine fan is how you respond to your team suffering consistent disappointments. Will you still love the club with the same enthusiasm as you did when they were great, or will you lose interest. Fortunately we haven't had to answer this question for long time but who knows whats around the corner. You only have to look at the united facebook page, goal.com, etc to see the comments coming from some 'reds' to realise some take our success for granted.

Even during the two years in which Chelsea under Mourinho dominated the PL, you could see a lot of so-called fans come up with the most stupid things to say ("get rid of SAF" among other things).

At least we earned our gloryhunters in the proper way, not bought them with financial doping :D

Good post. I often wonder what it will be like round here when United go through a 'Liverpool perioid' (which will inevitably happen).

Havent seen many in Dublin I must say... Seen more in Lisbon which was a bit unusual. The Irish City fans I know are old timers generally. Ive always seen a few of them on the ferries anytime Ive travelled over...

We won't start seeing City jerseys until they've won a few more titles and maybe a CL. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when - and I wonder how they'll feel having millions of glory hunting supporters after tarnishing our supporters with that brush since the early 90s?

true story. Frenchman who wore an Arsenal top to training on my 11-aside team one day showed up in a brand new set of shirt/shorts/socks for Manchester City. rationale was because Nasri moved there and "i just like them".

I know a few County fans who have suddenly remembered that they're actually City fans, 'CTID'.

I will tell you then, I find it quite funny. I went to the stadium last Saturday before the roses gig to pick up a dvd and there were oriental fans walking around the stadium taking pictures. The superstore was full of Irish buying merchandise. They had all come over for the gig and were greedily snapping up City goods.
To be honest I was quite proud that these people were there. It shows that we are now being taken seriously and we now have people who want to be associated with our club, rather than just attracting people who live within 10 minutes of the ground.
At the end of the day, for City to grow, we need to attract fans that come from outside the City of Manchester. If we wish to challenge Uniteds dominance long term we need to bring in more money. More fans = more money.
Now as I have stated on here many times that I have no problem with what people refer to a glory hunters as long as they support their team through thick and thin, from the moment they start supporting their chosen club. At the end of the day we all have a reason why we start supporting a club. Mine is because City are my local club.
Now I have a lot more respect for the Aussies, Irish, Asian etc who started supporting United because they were the most successful club than I have for the Manc or whoever clowns who ran off to set up fc united when the first hint of any trouble in most of their lifetimes hit. They are not fans but spoiled brats.
Now hopefully for me, City will go on to achieve great things. That will be great test of whether United fans are glory hunters or not. If someone got into United because they were on the telly all the time and winning trophies, but continues to support them when things go bad, then they are as much of a fan as any local born rag. All that separates them is the reason they started supporting their club initially.
Sorry for the long post.

An attitude like that shows you are scared and not up for a fight. Not one United fan I know (considering I come from NH, I know an awful lot) is thinking like that.
They are are all glad City are competing and they are all up for the challenge of trying to head us off.
The Manchester rivalry is magnificent now. The derbies are proper occasions that mean something more than just bragging rights.
Embrace the rivalry, the last few seasons have been great. Don't be a mard arse, running about saying it is not fair, they have more money than us, just because you don't win all the time.

 In time you'll come to learn, that when you're in a proper rivalry with us, part of that is throwing digs at each other (we've been doing it with Liverpool fans for years)

Of course we're up for a fight. Whilst you've caught up with us on the pitch though, it's always going to come back to the way it was achieved and no amount of denying it will change that.

And while we're on the subject of digs, I notice Bluemoon has a 'New' (in red letters above the heading, no less) 'History' section.

So, if choice based on success is the measurement of someone being a gloryhunter, does that mean that anyone who chooses to become a Liverpool fan at this point, must by definition be a misery hunter? :)

Intriguing that they don't even refer to it as the Etihad Stadium on their own website. Shows how much of a farce the sale of the so called 'naming rights' was

Or is it an article from before the naming rights took effect?

Randyman, it wasn't the original point I was trying to make (though I wasn't trying to avoid it) more to my point was I regularly see top4 jerseys and was expecting to see a boatload of City jersies and merch and even promo appearing all over the place (retail gravitates toward money) but I haven't.

I just found it odd. Not calling anyone's support into question. Or wasn't trying to anyway!

Isn't that what a glory hunter is though? Will just jump off when City don't win a few titles??... I honestly don't get why you've gone full circle and a half to make a bit of a nothing point..

Which is probably why 'City have the best fans in the country'. IMO they have one of the best loyal, die hard fan bases - about 20 or so thousand who'd follow them wherever they went. A bit like Leeds did, Bradford do, United briefly did, Newcastle breifly did etc. But in terms of the slightly more casual fans, I have no idea where they claim to have the best fans in the country. For starters, they all come from Manchester, leaving them with a very finite number of fans.

Although today at work I spoke to a City fan with a Birmingham postcode. I was utterly gobsmacked.

i know a couple of new City fans in East Anglia

Nah. You were just 10 mate. Being a kid is different. Like you said, there isn't that closeness to the club for us foreigners so we can only make the best of the tellie.

Watch City? I'd rather see Dave Lee Travis play Macbeth...

Agree with Snow. I started following United when I was almost 9 (99), back then I had no idea how good United were at all. I watched the CL final with my dad, who told me how cool it was that the Germans got beaten by their own game (last minute winners) and something stuck with me from that I suppose. Obviously also helped that a family on my street were big supporters so I had something to associate with.

Hell back then I didn't even know that it meant a treble was won, no idea of the magnitude of the season. In the end it's more about how you feel inside, I can't for a second imagine supporting any other club.

Because City have never had any fans that wanted to associate themselves to us for a chance of glory in my lifetime anyway, so the fact that people now want to makes me proud of the fact that I have seeing something good happen to my club.

How do we know United fans are only there for the glory if many fans have never witnessed any really difficult times?

I can remember City being relegated 5 times in my lifetimes and one of those were to division 3. If United were to go on to suffer the same fate, would everyone on this website still come on here every day with the same enthusiasm as they do now? I certainly don't think that there would be hundreds of thousands of views on a Lincoln V United matchday thread.

Now a glory hunter for me is someone who can tell me that United have won 19 titles etc but could not sit here and have a discussion about other aspects of Uniteds history with me, without looking it up on google first (I know about Uniteds history as we learnt about both clubs history at Primary school in Newton Heath and from reading books on Mancunian football history)

Great for you, sure, and great for us, to a lesser extent. But utterly devastating to English football as a whole, and built entirely on cheating which is near-enough indistinguishable from that for which Rangers are suffering their ignominious fate. It is that, rather than supposed jealousy or "being a mard arse", which is why you're so widely loathed, and why your 'achievements' will never be taken seriously.

In a way I admire your chutzpah Dave. Instead of pretending City haven't become everything your entire fanbase ever claimed to despise and then some, you pretend that you've never had a problem with glory hunters. It's quite an interesting strategy, and one I suspect we'll see quite a lot of it in the near future, as Abu Dhabi FC take on a million and one new fans. Football fans are terribly prone to hypocrisy, but City fans are the most perfect example of that tendency that we're ever likely to see.

As for myself, I'm fecking sick of people who I'd never heard mention football until two years ago suddenly harping on about City all the bleeding time. It's not the glory hunters that bother me the most, it's the local gits who have been 'city fans all their life' but probably couldn't pick Bernardo Corradi out of a line-up featuring him, an inflatable banana and Hatem Trabelsi.

It might do for you. I will just keep watching Sergio's goal and and will be thinking thank feck for Sheikh Mansour.

Aye, you think "thank feck for an Emirati feudal lord", and we think "thank feck for Sir Alex Ferguson".

I'll keep watching 12 seasons of football and will be thinking thank feck for Sir Alex Ferguson.

To be fair mate, there are shitloads of local United fans that would walk round in town today and not recognize Antonio Valencia. There were a few of us walking to Selfridges from the Arndale and he was walking over the bridge. It was me that seen him and I was with 4 reds.

As for your point about English football. City being taken over was the best thing that could have happened to it. In an age when your owners are bleeding your club dry and removing money from the game. City are pumping money into it. Look at the title deciding derby last year, was in not the most watched game of all time? Do you really think we would have got this mega new tv deal if United had walked away with the title by 20 points. City have given the premier league a massive boost. Why do you think Richard Scudamore is not trying to impose FFP onto the premier league?

The ironic thing is that Uefa have tried to close the shop in regards to the champs league. They wanted to keep it cosy for their established clubs and don't want anyone else getting a look in. Well they have fecked up because the premier league will take full advantage of it and become more powerful.
Who is going to want to watch a champions league with Macabia Haifa in it if City and Chelsea are not in it?
With increased Pemier league money, the teams will be able to get better players and be more competitive. Italian and Spanish football is skint.
UEFA have fecked up and the Premier League imo will become the dominant force.

As for glory hunters, there aqre enough threads on here where I have expressed my opinion. I have no problem in why someone supports their team as long as they stick with them.

Specious argument at best.City are pumping money into City.I don't believe for a minute they give a feck about anyone else.City are just about to join those established clubs

You whole beliefs are fatally flawed. More and more clubs around europe will get sugar daddies. City will just be done over by another sugar daddy.
