Yeah, definitely. The 54 winning team was really just an amazing underdog story. Obviously we had a few quality players in it, but it wasn't a golden generation or anything like that. Both the 66 and the 70 side played better football than the WC winning sides in 54 and 74, but were unlucky to come short. The World Cup in 1970 and the Euro win in 1972 were clearly the peak of that generation. In 74 we got the job done despite being mostly underwhelming throughout the tournament. The squad was in disarray from the start and it showed. We just fluked a 1-0 win against a sensational Poland team in horrendous conditions (heavy rain turned the pitch into a lake and hurt their wonderful technical football more than our efficiency) in what was effectively the semifinal and then played our only good game of the tournament in the final. Sadly that overshadows the beautiful football this generation played in the tournaments before and few people remember how entertaining to watch Germany was in the second half of the 60's and early 70's.

It's really a shame that Seeler and Schnellinger missed out on a tournament win. They played in all World Cups inbetween the two wins (58,62, 66, 70). Great timing :(.

Who better as a 12th man than the great Sarosi? There are a few of that all-rounded ilk either side of the second world war, but Sarosi brings the greatest pedigree.

Tbf, it was a tongue in cheek comment by Gio to EAP's moaning :D. Seriously though, I reckon Sarosi could probably do a brilliant job in most of the central positions, right from the central striker to the centre back. Came close to picking him in the Euro draft but harms beat me to it and did a brilliant job of selling him and his versatility.

Goalscorer of the highest quality (351 goals in 383 games for Ferencváros, 5 goals in 1938 WC winning the silver boot, leading them to the final; top scorer - 49 goals in 43 games in the Mitropa Cup (CL of sorts back then) and twice top scorer in the Euros), great in midfield and a CB of the highest quality (shutting out the likes of Antonin Puc and Silvio Piola when used there). Should be mentioned alongside the likes of Meazza and that other underrated great in the pre-war era.

In the mid-1930s, Gyorgy Sarosi was named in European XIs published by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Kickerand L’Auto. And while there may be nothing surprising to that concurrence, there was a stupefying undercurrent to the three prestigious publications’ selection of the Ferencvaros and Hungary stand-out: the former picked him at centre-back, the German magazine in midfield and the French sportspaper in attack. It was an emphatic testament to the fact that Sarosi did not just play in multiple positions, but could excel in them.

“One match he’d be at the back, and the next he’d be in midfield or up front – that was impressive enough in itself," said Silvio Piola, the legendary Italian who played against Sarosi for Lazio and Italy. “But what was more impressive was that he was probably the best defender in the world, the best midfielder and the best striker.
