Berbatov

Of course. We used to pull off big (sometimes record) buys quite regularly as a Plc (certainly more than we've done under the Glazers) - Pallister, Keane, Cole, Veron, Rio, Rooney...

If there's one myth that's been put to bed over the past few weeks it's the idea that under the Glazers transfers go smoothly. Our haggling over the price of Berbatov nearly cost us the player (although no-one could have predicted the City interest that eventually meant we had to meet Spurs's asking price).

For God's sake Ralphie, be happy for once!

That's just because it suited his team. He did well with Saviola up front in a 4-2-3-1 just before they signed Kanoute who changed everything really.

I think he'll go for 4-2-3-1 with Spurs, both Bent and Pavlyuchenko like playing up top on their own, and have proven themselves in that position.
It was quite obvious at the bridge that they need someone to support Bent though. He keeps winning aerial challenges for no reason. Until Giovani, Lennon and Bentley knows how to get into position I think we'll see two forwards regularly. At least at home.

Well we'll find out soon enough I'm sure. But neither are creative in the slightest and just base their games around playing on the last line of defence, I just can't see it working that way.

Anyway, I'm off to bed. Good way to end the night.

It's for moments like this that I love the cafe.

Anyways, as he started this epic thread (with, may I add, quite possibly the most ironic comment in the history of the cafe) I think it's only right that he ends it, so Gus, take it away....

:lol: But he said "end of thread" right at the start didnt he?

Spuds turn on Levy now....could it get any better?!

Berbatov leaves, with Levy's principles not far behind

SpursMad Editor on an all too familiar story about how much money talks
Dimitar Berbatov has completed his painfully drawn out move to Manchester United. The Bulgarian striker has cost the Champions £30.75m. The deal also sees youngster Fraizer Campbell move the other way on a season long loan.

Berbatov's departure has been an inevitability for a very long time so in itself his departure is no shock. The most galling part of the deal, however, is that Daniel Levy has agreed to drop his complaint to the FA against Manchester United.
So for the price of a few extra million added to the transfer fee, Levy has, in effect, allowed Alex Ferguson and Manchester United to buy him off. Despite all his apparent shock and disgust at the actions of both United and Liverpool, in the end Levy proved his principles can be bought as easily as his top players.
The whole affair has been a complete shambles from start to finish and yet somehow few Spurs fans will be surprised we have ended the transfer window without fully replacing Keane or Berbatov. Yes new signing Roman Pavlyuchenko comes with a big reputation but we've sold two top quality strikers, not one.
Instead of allowing the mercenary Berbatov to move when his head was first turned Levy dug his heels in, and for what? Was it to uphold the honour of the club or the rules of football as he claimed? Of course not.
Instead Levy steadfastly refused to countenance selling Berbatov to United, not because we aren't a selling club or he wanted to hold on to one of our top players, but because he was trying to prove a point, both to the fans and to Sir Alex. In the end the only point he proved was that when it comes to the crunch he'll act in his own interests, not for the good of the club.
Those who are reading this and thinking that he has done well to get such a massive fee for our best player are not seeing the big picture. Sure Levy has the art of squeezing teams for every penny he can get down to a fine art but this deal was significant for other reasons.
OK, the money has always been reinvested in the club and no doubt that will continue. Yet all this shows the top four sides is that rules and regulations mean nothing. This was never about United going behind our backs, it was all about the money.
In every battle there is a winner and in this case that man is Alex Ferguson. It couldn't really have worked out any better for him as he sees his club secure their number one transfer target and the prospect of a nasty court battle dissolve. He also has the nice little bonus of allowing one his decent prospects to get Premiership experience at a club who have no chance of challenging for a place in the Champions League any time soon.
Oh well, who really cares. I mean what's the point in moaning on about principles when it's pretty clear no one has any in football any more. In sport a where a team can go from the brink of financial ruin to breaking the British transfer record in the space of no more than a week, why should anything be a surprise?
Strangely no explanation from Mr Levy at this point. Perhaps he's too busy tucked up in bed to think of any meaningless platitudes about how the club's hand was forced and how the fee is more compensation for the terrible way the club has been treated.
Pull the other one Daniel.

I'm very glad we've got him, but I won't apologise for my earlier statements in this thread. At the time I genuinly felt that there were better options available. That I now realise there probably weren't won't make me regret saying the things I did.

Still, I'm dead chuffed. I'll sleep well tonight. :D

Once you work out the meaning of this term in this context you'll fare better IMO.

in the last 8 months , they have sold keane , berbatov and defoe .. the better 3 of their great 4man strike force

replaced them with someone who had a decent euros .. i really hope palvechynchencko takes time to settle down in england .. the panic would be hilarious

I honestly think he'll be a bit of a flop. Here's hoping.

I can't understand people wanting Spurs to fail now. Happy as I am about us acquiring Berbatov I feel sorry for their fans. A few months ago they won their first trophy in nearly a decade and it looked like the start of a bright new era for them, now two of their best have left them and the future's looking uncertain at best. Levy's a cnut, yes, but I hope Spurs go on to do (quite) well.

Dimitar Berbatov is a classy and complete centre-forward, pairing the ability to ruthlessly and regularly find the net inside the box with the aptitude to create moments of sheer magic outside it.

Sir Alex likes players with plenty of charisma in the way they play, and the Bulgarian’s languid style is instantly recognisable on the field. It’s also an approach that has drawn comparisons with former United talisman Eric Cantona. Like the captivating Frenchman, Berbatov loves to entertain with the ball at his feet. United fans are in for a real treat with the Bulgarian in a United shirt in attack alongside Wayne Rooney, Carlos
Tevez, Cristiano Ronaldo et al.

Berbatov started out at Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia. He joined The Armymen aged 17, following in the footsteps of his father, Ivan, who also played for the club. After making his debut aged 18 in the 1998/99 campaign, he went on to score 14 goals in 27 league matches the following season.

His talent quickly attracted attention from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, who made their move for the Bulgarian front man in January 2001 after an impressive start to the season for CSKA. Berbatov – national team captain and Bulgarian Player of the Year in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2007 – made a slow start to his time in Germany, but he regularly shone in the Champions League, scoring a spectacular solo goal against Lyon and also finding the net against Liverpool (already he’s in favour).

The only blot on his copybook is that he was part of the Leverkusen team that knocked United out of the Champions League semi finals in April 2002. He came on as a substitute in the final as the Germans lost 2-1 to Real Madrid in Glasgow.

Berbatov was eventually lured to the Premier League when Tottenham signed him in July 2006 for a reported £10.9million fee. He was an instant hit at
White Hart Lane, scoring his first competitive goal two minutes into his home Premier League debut against Sheffield United. He went on to score 23 goals in his opening season, which he matched again in 2007/08, a campaign which saw him voted Fans' Player of the Year.

However, after months of speculation linking him with a move to Old Trafford in the summer of 2008, Sir Alex Ferguson finally got his man on transfer deadline day with just minutes to go. Berbatov signed a four-year contract on 1 September 2008 for an undisclosed fee, with Fraizer Campbell heading to White Hart Lane on a season-long loan as part of the deal.

He didn't exactly start it, there were plenty of threads on Berbatov, the mods just merged them and his post happened too be first, though i think his "end of thread" statement put him top of the list for the opening post.

Seconded. Even though they make us pay, they've got many exciting players, and I love it if they can steal as many points from Arse, Pool and Chelski as possible.

Regardless, Gus will forever be remembered, if for nothing else, for the biggest thread in caf history.

Levy has left spurs without a strike force because he dragged it out so long.

He might of thought dragging this out might some how damage united or make us sweat, but in fact all it has done is left spurs without a top proven striker, and any hope spurs had for this season down the drain.

the guys head is big enough. Stop giving gus credit, it'll only encourage him. I think everyone can agree let's just be happy we got a player in whom will do good things for the club
