Danny set to step into Arshavin’s boots
Portugal midfielder reveals Russian naturalisation attempt
As he prepares to become the second most expensive Portuguese footballer of all time, newly capped international Danny has revealed that he was approached to become a naturalised Russian, ahead of his recent Seleccao call-up from Carlos Queiroz.
The 25-year-old has spent the last three and a half years in Russian football, where he has excelled with capital club Dynamo Moscow, and his form in Eastern Europe led to a first international cap in Portugal’s win over the Faeroe Islands last week.
“Before I was called up for the Portuguese squad, a lot of important people from Russia spoke to me and I was made that proposal (to play for Russia) but I did not say yes. It has always been my dream to represent the Portugal national team,” said the 25-year-old.
It is a remarkable period in the career of the Venezuelan-born midfielder, as Danny is set to follow up his international bow by completing a 30m euro move from Dynamo to national champions Zenit St. Petersburg, making him the most expensive footballer in the history of Russian football.
Russian league’s top player
Zenit look set to sell star player Andrei Arshavin – with Tottenham and Manchester United known to be in the running for the Euro 2008 star – and by paying the release clause in Danny’s contract, the current Uefa Cup holders have identified the man widely regarded as the best player in the domestic game to fill his boots. Danny expects to sign the contract with his new club inside the next 24 hours.
Although regarded as the new powerhouse of Russian football after their league and Uefa Cup double last season, moving to Zenit will see Danny drop four league places, with Dynamo currently in second place and his new club languishing down in 6th in the Premier League.
However, the former Sporting man has plenty of reasons to be excited about his new adventure, which could start with a debut against Manchester United in Friday’s European Supercup. “I am going to play in the Champions League this season, and Zenit are still not out of the running to be champions of Russia,” he explained.
Danny’s move will make him the second most expensive Portuguese footballer of all time, second only to Luis Figo’s controversial 65m Euro move from Barcelona to Real Madrid in the summer of 2000.
