Ben Pearson

So I was at Bristol City today. Pearson played whole game.
He is interesting. Didn't scream Man United or even from a PL club.
But, for one so young, just being deemed ready for loan is a good sign of maturity.
Gave as good as he got against league leaders and stands up for himself and team. Had a few running battle with some of City players. Clearly not overawed.
Couple of things I picked up. Comfortable passer with either foot and played the holding role in a 4141, so plenty of responsibility in that position, again, especially for one so young.
Will be an interesting one to watch.

Pearson determined to kick on

Manchester United midfielder Ben Pearson is enjoying his loan spell at Barnsley and hoping to kick on, something that is a recurring theme when talking to the combative England Under-20 international.

Helping to inspire a charge up the table by the League One side, only halted by consecutive defeats over Easter, the on-loan youngster believes he has handled the step up from Reserves-level football with the Reds.

"I'm loving it," he told MUTV. "I've extended the loan twice and all the lads have been great. I've been playing every game and playing well, kicking on, which is good experience. There is such a difference and I think it's the next step in my career. I needed to do it. I saw a lot of Under-21 action in the last 18 months or so and this was the next step. There is a massive fanbase here and what a club to come to. It was underachieving when I first came but we've kicked on since then."

The Tykes players have helped Pearson settle in to life at the Yorkshire club and he has coped with the change in manager after Lee Johnson replaced Danny Wilson at the Oakwell helm.

"Since the first day, they've all been welcoming," he stated. "It's quite a young bunch – only three or four are aged over 30. I've got friendly with them all so it's just like being part of a normal team.

"It was a bit difficult at first when Danny Wilson left as he obviously brought me here. I was a bit unsure as to whether I'd move back and everything would change but the caretaker came in and was all for me playing as well. So I took that on board and now Lee Johnson has been appointed. I knew he wanted me at Oldham before so it's all been good. The gaffer has shown faith in me so I can't really complain."

Pearson is keeping track of the progress of the team he has left behind as Warren Joyce's charges sit at the top of the table. As for the future, he is unsure what will happen next season after he returns to Old Trafford.

"I've been watching all the Under-21 games and they seem to be doing well," the 20-year-old added. "I speak to quite a few of them to see how they're doing and I never lose contact with them while I'm here.

"I came here just for experience originally and hoping I could kick on. Whether next year I can be in the first-team fold, you never know, or go out on loan again, hopefully to a Championship side, so it would be good if Barnsley get promoted. I'll see what happens. I'm not tied down to anything. I just want to play my football and enjoy myself."

Would love to see him get a chance in the pre-season tour. Has done much better than anyone could have predicted for a defensive midfielder in his 1st spell playing regular first team football!

Got confidence in himself, like it!

All sounds very positive. I hate this part of a young player's career, everything is so fragile. But Pearson must be the least fragile player - in every sense - I can remember at this level. I still feel sure he'll make it with us.

There's something very right about this lad. He really can make it and I feel LVG will love his character.

Looks like he can also adapt to new football environments very quickly. That means he's a fast learner and this is one of the things United ask from young talents.

Recall Pearson!

just kidding

Ah, what could have been. Imagine if we'd given him all those pointless cameos that Fletcher got before we shipped him out. It's not a totally daft prospect - Coquelin was in almost exactly the same situation at Arsenal, and now he's one of their most important players.

Although it would've nice to see him get some first team action I prefer the idea that he's playing competitive football regularly, I think its far more beneficial for his career.

Coquelin has played lots of first team football and is 3 or 4 years older but apart from that...

He's only ever really had tiny cameos before now. He's older, yes, but if anything that made his involvement less likely, since the consensus was that he'd missed the boat and was soon to be shipped out.

Yep, you're right of course.

I really hope we keep him as a 3rd choice DM next season. With the added Champion League games and Blind also covering for Shaw at left back I think we could give enough game time.

he's been out on loan several times as well as making multiple cameo appearances for Arsenal. This is Pearsons first ever loan.

Nonetheless, he was on his way out, barely registered on most Arsenal fans' radars, and all of a sudden he's a key regular in the first team. Not dissimilar even if he has had a couple of loan spells already.

That has very little to do with whether he has the requisite talent and experience to be able to make an impact.

lets just hope he goes with the first team on tour this summer....

Ben Pearson, who finished his loan spell at Barnsley last weekend, took time to answer our Training Talk questions and offer his opinion on the fastest player at Manchester United. The midfield terrier thinks it is difficult to look beyond his Under-21 colleague James Wilson...

What is your favourite part of training?
Probably small-sided games, little five-a-sides and six-a-sides. They are more about winning. I like to win and there is a lot of scoring goals and defending so I enjoy that.

If you were picking an ideal five-a-side team at United, who would be in it alongside you?
David De Gea in net. You can't really complain about that, he's been incredible this year and, as a five-a-side keeper, you couldn't ask for much better. Probably Phil Jones – he's aggressive and has got pace. Michael Carrick in there alongside me to calm things down as his passing is unbelievable. I'd probably have Wayne Rooney up top and, if I wasn't in it, James Wilson for a bit of pace. I think those two as a combination could be unstoppable really.

There has been a debate over who is the fastest United player. Who is the sprint king?
Angel Di Maria has got to be up there but I think it's underestimated how fast Wilson is, with the ball as well. Without the ball, maybe Di Maria is a bit quicker or Antonio Valencia but, with the ball, I can't see anyone being faster than Wilson.

Are you working on anything in the gym at the moment?
Yeah, I just need to bulk up a bit. I have done that over the past year but I'm just doing exercises in the gym to get me a bit stronger. I need to be physically strong to play in this league so it's helping me.

Is there one part of your game you'd like to improve?
Definitely my shooting.

Do you use technology to help aid your game?
Not really in training but I've been getting DVDs of the games here. We don't analyse ourselves all the time in the Under-21s but we do watch the opponents.

Who scored the best goal you've ever seen in training?

It's a difficult one actually. I'm not sure but Josh Harrop has scored a few pearlers in training so I'd say him.

Talk us through the best goal you've ever scored in training...

I've scored a few over the years, although not on a regular basis. Maybe last year when I hit one curling into the top corner past Pierluigi Gollini. That's probably my favourite.

I think he has the personality to play for United but I do think he needs to improve on a few little things. He's a tenacious player which I like but with tackling on the brink of extinction, you have to be exceptionally good at timing it right otherwise its a booking. So he just needs to add a bit of discipline to his game.

I don't think he is the best long passer of the ball but I have seen him do it before. Short passing he's decent. Retention on the ball is something he needs to work on. I don't think he has the best balance on the ball so he needs to hit the gym to add some muscle. That for me is the main barrier between him and the first team right now.

Great maturity, very aware of the players around him, anticipates danger quite efficiently and will drive the team forward like a battering ram. LVG would obviously want him to think before he makes a pass which is fair enough but you need some kind of plan in your mind of what attack your building up to do otherwise you end up playing it safe all the time. I think the player he reminds me most of is Hargreaves simply because he has that energy and fearlessness to win the ball and take the game to the opposition.

I hope we bring him to preseason, and he manages to convince the manager that he can be part of the selection for next season.

Barnsley want to sign him on a permanent deal.
Barnsley can do one.

He's definitely the young player I've been most excited about for the past few years (Januzaj aside).

I just hope he's on LvGs radar. Last season LvG said he always asks the U21s coach which players he feels are ready so I just hope Warren Joyce thinks it's Pearson's time.

Seems like a lock for a championship loan next year. If he excels in the championship then he might get a chance. Age isn't on his side really so he might need some luck and to pick the right side

Could he make the bench for today's game with Pereira and Carrick out? Or is he injured too?

was fantastic against City, really hope he will go on tour....

No, he wasn't. He had a good first 45 but he needs to take his fair share of responsibility for our 2nd half collapse, during which City won the midfield battle too easily.

didnt watch the second half as it was impossible because of shit streams but he looked good in match compilation even in second half + he cant be blamed for the collapse as the team was pretty poor to be honest. We cant expect that he and Rothwell run the show for 90 minutes all on their own, not against City.

Highlight reels do not tell the full story at the best of times, and they're pointless when it comes to gauging a player whose team is chasing shadows. Like most of our players, Pearson had a lackluster second half. Rothwell tried but didn't get much help.
