Bebe

?

He often has trouble when faced with a defender he can take on. He shimmies and gets wider and wider towards the extremities of the pitch, he did that several times in the 2 matches I saw from him this season and its something he used to do in the reserves. To beat a man he relies on his pace which again, as far as I've seen is a little overstated. But he is quick and can indeed knock the ball past a defender and run on to it.

He can do plenty of things, dribble, pass, cross but all at a very average level. Its just his shot that is good enough for us.

Well you know, some people bothered to see how he was doing on loan not just watch youtube.

Not really. I´m not speaking about premier league level but at our league, he has shown himself as a pretty technical player with good dribbling skills (made a genius run against my team Sporting, too bad i can´t find a gif). I mean he held his own against very good full backs like Siqueira (Benfica), Alex Sandro (Porto) and Jefferson (Sporting). It´s not just a question of power and pace, Bébe actually did very good dribbling plays during all the league.

When Bébe came back to Portugal, alot of football fans and pundits also made fun of him like in England. I would definitely say that he proved them wrong. Not only he was one of the best portuguese performers in the league, he also did very good against the top teams (Porto, Benfica, Sporting and Braga). That´s what made me think about giving Bébe a chance at Sporting. He has very interesting caractheristics besides his powerful shot. He is physically a beast and has reasonable technical ability. He has improved in some areas like crossing and decision making with coaches at Rio Ave and Paços de Ferreira, why wouldn´t he be able to keep evolving under very good and experienced coaches at Sporting or Benfica for example? He has even improved his professional approach and work rate. He is more mature and experienced.

About recouping your money, not a chance. He only has one year left on his contract and few clubs can pay that ammount (only Benfica and Porto) and i doubt they would do that to a player with his contractual situation.

He deserves a look in at pre-season and make a decision from there. He was certaintly impressive in the Portguese League but it depends if he can now translate that for United.

It depends on his character, was he the main player for Pacos? He could just thrive in that situation but for a big team like United feel the pressure and hide away. He definitely has the raw ability, quick, strong and a good shot. It's his technical side of the game that needs fine tuning, much like Zaha.

He became the main player by his own merit because of his performances. You have to see this with perspective. At the begining of the season, Paços lost their manager to Porto and alot of players due to their amazing season where they finished third. The team was extremely weakened and couldn´t handle a very complicated calendar with european football. If it wasn´t for Bébe they would get relegated for sure.

Having said that i´m still skeptical about Bébe at United but extremely curious to see how he would do at a portuguese big club. My guess is that he would do very well and after that, he could again have a stint at a big european club. His abrupt transition to one of europe´s biggest club, didn´t help his evolution considering he had very frail "foundations" and a very hard upbringing. He is now more mature and experienced and showing a little more potencial. I think Bébe deserves this bit of recognition. After the ridicule he endured, most of the players would probably just give up and disappear. Bébe has shown caracther and willingness to learn and evolve. He deserves another chance. If not at United then at Sporting or Benfica type of club.

Yeah be a shame if we were to just sell him this summer after the season he has had. He should be loaned out to a newly promoted team or Sporting if they are interested as part of the Carvalho deal.

His long range shots, as impressive as they can be, are nothing more than hit and hopes. He just leathers it hoping for the best, there is no calculation behind it at all. For every goal that rockets in, there are 10 that hit the corner flag.

Have to disagree there - I think he has a rather fine technique, it just needs some tuning. He often hits the ball (including a few free-kicks) in the very same way Ronaldo hits them (the foot strikes the ball with the instep, but the foot is turned sideways, it's not just any laces hit) - Ronaldo is probably the only player in the world who actually gets them on target with regularity (and even he hits half of them into row Z), such is the margin for error. See Memphis Depay's shooting/free-kicks, for example. It's one of those where, if you get it right, it's almost impossible to stop, but if you are a millimeter off (where the contact is between ball and foot), it goes into the stands. It's just the nature of the technique, which is why many, who have indisputably good technique, will still opt for a regular curler/drive with the laces, when they really want it on target (Juninho).

It's just whether it should be attempted so much (as opposed to letting another player curl one), that is the problem to me (Ronaldo is probably the only player at the minute who can understandably attempt it every time). This is coming from myself, a footballer who strikes the ball in the same way - i've been practicing this technique for about 5 years or so, & still I will hit 90% of them out of the stadium.

By the way, sorry if this came out wrong, mate. Just thought i'd try and explain how I see it. He is obviously not comparable to Cristiano (yet :D)

Edit: That's not to say he actually uses this technique all the time, though. I just see him use it for freekicks and some shots from distance, from the times I have watched him. You are correct - he does slam it into the crowd (or lack of it ) far too many times, regardless of how he tries to strike the ball.

I want to believe it, partly because I hope he's as good a player as he can be for his own sake and for United's and also because you've seen a lot more of him this season than I have. However from the 2 matches I saw he had the same problem taking players on that he had for our reserves so until I see it myself I'm not sold. In those matches he did his get wider and wider tricks and then resorted to kicking the ball and running after it to win throws

Well any player has their good and bad games, if you watched him for example against Sporting and Benfica, he had good games going on 1 vs 1. Of course he relies on pace but he has decent technical ability. Even good dribblers have bad games. Not saying that´s it´s his main asset or his biggest quality but it´s decent enough.

I'm happy for him. He's been an absolute laughing stock for a long time, and now he's showing that he is actually a good, respectable footballer.

I'd say the tide has turned significantly from the days of idiots constantly referencing the "Bebe crossing show". He looks to have turned into a decent player who is improving every year. Can't really wish for anything more than that. Another leap of this kind next year and he'll be in the mix for the Euros.

I expect a club like Everton or maybe Spurs would like to have him so thats huge progress on where he was before

He was bought on potential and has started to show and recognise it. Maybe he was not handled the best at the start. He had a heavy price tag for what player who had barley played any top flight football, and was shunted into the spot light surrounded by some of the best players in the world, big expectations in a foreign country, thats a lot of pressure. Loaning him straight back to a Portuguese team, having his playing constantly would have probably been the best for his development.
I do hope he is given another chance here, look at the arc of Drogba and what he became, who only turned pro at 21. The attributes are all there for Bebe, big, fast, strong, good shooting ability and improving technique.

His development would have been even more impressive this past year had he not lost a year through injury in Turkey, and subsequently having to go through rehab as well as slowly rebuilding his confidence that he could perform without a recurrence.

Wheatever aboat his amaizing price, he didn't earn his corn.

Well, he is one of the most exciting young players in Portugal now. Why should we sell him for peanuts? I hope we give him a chance. We would look pretty stupid if he turn out to be a great player.

Not arguing with that but the reality is that if we do sell him, it won't be for a great deal of money, and yes we may end up looking stupid if he goes on to do well elsewhere.

That has nothing to do with our not getting much for players, and everything to do with the fact that we're generally not a selling club. Players have ridiculously long careers at United, more so than most other clubs and when we do sell noteworthy players, they go for big fees.

Not sure what your point is. The above shows that only players who have had fine careers with us go for this sort of money (Veron being the exception, but he was already established as world class when we bought him and we lost half our money). Every exciting young player who we've sold after only the odd appearance has gone for peanuts.

Its time we loan him to an EPL club now.

Seems like a logical next step. I'd almost rather we gave him a chance in some cup games, or off the bench in some league games, and then think about loaning him in January though.

No idea of the reliability of the source but according to this article (taken from a Portugese newspaper), Sporting Lisbon, as well as Braga, are interested in signing him. Sounds like a permanent move so maybe he will be next to go in the clearout.

Getting a bidding war going and recoup some of the fee. If we got £5m-£6m it'd certainly be a good return when you consider everyones opinion of him upon joining.

Having watched a bit of him this past year, they could've definitely used him. Bento is rightfully being criticized for his decision making on a number of things.

No way he would be any worse than their strikers.

Portugal's squad is so underwhelming and poor.. I was surprised Bebe didnt get a look in, wasn't he the player of the year?

Am I the only one who thinks LVG could still make him a United worthy player? He has all the attributes to be at least a squad player.

What he really needs is time and games and he was never really going to get that here. Management/senior coaching set up would have been far too pre-occupied with more important stuff than in spoon-feeding Bebe as his development required. We should have loaned him out as soon as signed him to a Championship side but I suspect there was too much ego involved in not doing that for fear it would have looked suspicious or an immediate admission of failure.

From watching him last year, he seems to have improved significantly and should definitely be given a chance. If you factor in his lost year due to injury at Besiktas, he would probably have developed even further. Definitely needs to come on the tour, at a minimum.

He couldn't have been any worse than Eder. Not much of a compliment though, you could throw an injured Danny Graham out there and have more hope he'd score.

No. I also think Bebe has all the attributes to be a squad player, especially if we go with a 4-3-3, where Van Gaal would probably play him as a left inside forward. He has blistering pace, he's as strong as an ox, he's got flair, he can dribble past opponents and has a great shot on him. With no real options on the left wing position, except maybe Welbeck and Januzaj, who I'd personally play on the right to cut onto his left, unless we buy a wide player this Summer, I personally would give Bebe a chance. He's improved significantly since he's been out on loan, and I think he could surprise a few people. I also think he'd do a better job than Young.

Does anyone know how much time he has left on his contract? He needs as much football as he can get because of his late start to top flight football, and he won't get that at United this season, but he's one we should keep on our books for another season or 2 if possible. He's improved quite a bit and while the Bebe crossing show was terrible, the thing that impressed me was that at least he kept trying to put crosses in. Shows he has balls. How many players here have went into hiding when things haven't gone their way during games?

Funny that this will be the one transfer that will be criticized and used as a punch line for years to come, when the fact is , if we were to sell him today we'd make at least half of our initial transfer fee back. Compare that to Fellaini, who we'd lose at least 12 million on if we're lucky after just 1 season.

I think he only has 1 year left on his contract - if it wasnt for his contract running down then I reckon we may even have recouped all the fee we paid for him, which would have been some result after all the rumours about his initial transfer.

I would have liked to see him get a chance after last seasons heroics but I think it is likely that he will be picked up by a Portuguese club.
