I'd have said the same last year, but he's taken his game up a couple of levels this season.
Massively overhyped since he first came on the scene particularly as a wide player. I've seen him have a couple of decent games in CM this year but he'd need to do a lot more before I was convinced.

He was outstanding today. A really top class midfield performance.

He'd be so good for us in the middle - he can use the ball, he can get stuck in and help defend.

Absolutely class today.

He was superb for Bayern last season too, really impressed me in some of his champions league matches. But we all know how it goes with Bayern players. They probably wouldnt sell him if we offered £45 million or something like that. He's one thats definitely off the shopping list unless he falls out with the manager.

He's got everything for the role, he reads the game he tackles well, he has a great engine he can carry the ball and he can pass it off either foot. He's great to watch and has established himself as one of the best midfielders around. Top player.

He's not. I've seen too many bad seasons from Schweinsteiger to be fooled just because he has played one really good season. If he manages to produce another great season, then fine, let's call him a top player. Until then - no, thanks. His form for Germany has always been good, so it doesn't prove anything.

bad seasons as a winger. His role has changed, his maturity has changed and he's now playing in a position where his influence over the game is all consuming.

Whoever decided that he would make a box to box style central midfield player rather than a attack mid style wing man deserves the plaudits.

Because he was actually quite good in his previous role but now he is at the age 25/26 where central midfielders have the experience so his consistency has gone up.

He is a top player, going by his performances in the world cup and for Bayern this season he's one of the best around at what he does, which is basically a bit of everything.

he's a converted winger (who didn't have genuine pace) but is bloody good in midfield.

Essentially a more technically gifted, taller, stronger, better milner.

And would be cheaper too.

Manchester United is club constantly challenging for the Premier League and the Champions League. Neither Milner nor an upgrade like Schweinsteiger are good enough for us. He won't go for cheap, though.

nonsense, Schweinsteiger along side Fletcher would be a fantastic pairing.

Scholes is past it, Carrick is useless and the whoever else you have come nowhere near the ability and all round game of Schweinsteiger.

Also Milner i agree about but Schweinsteiger is on another level.

You're having a laugh.

milner will end up moving for close to 30 million quid.

schweini is better, but no fecking way he moves for anywhere near milner due to lack of english tax on the german.

that said, not sure if united need him. rather spunk money on ozil if we are to get a german.

No, no nonsense at all. As opposed to some muppets, I watch Schweinsteiger week-in and week-out performing, not just in the Champions League or all two years in a tournament. I've seen too many bad and atrocious displays from him to be entirely convinced.

Rubbish.

We were made to pay £18 million for Hargreaves. Bayern sell their players at a premium even beyond the "English player" tax. If we wanted to sign him we'd be paying over £40 million.

Me too Chief and whilst i'm not a Bayern fan and wont claim to have watched him week in week out i do feel that he'd be a great addition to most sides.

Now Lailiani says he's too inconsistent to be considered a top player. Bayern won the league and got to the CL final. How can your main midfielder be inconsistent when your side do that?

Also even if he is as inconsistent as people say when he's actually playing well, like i've seen him to for bayern in the cl and now germany in the world cup he's genuinely one of the best around at what he does.

Consistent or not when he's on top form he's better than the majority of other central midfielders even when they are on top form. I'd take him over Gerrard or Lampard anyday.

Just my opinion of course.

Because one consistent season doesn't make you a consistant player, particularly if you have had utterly atrocious displays the years before. That's my issue with him. If he performs next year like he did this season, I'll eat my words. Until then, I remain reserved and sceptical.

It was the same with Demichelis. One good season and everyone considered him a world-class defender when all the seasons before and after that season proved the opposite.

He's not been consistent because as others have said he has been maturing into this role. Much like Fletcher, it took him some time but, I really don't see him taking a nose dive. Waiting on a player like this would be silly to see if he remains consistent over a couple sesaons - he'll either become too old or will cost even more in a few years.

He has shown enough in this one season to where if he as to replicate even 80% of it for United - he'd make a huge difference for us in the middle of the park.

Rumors circulating, I heard this during the Aussie/German game, that Schweinsteiger is upset over the Bayern fans booing him early in the season and is contemplating a move.

I say if he says I want out, we roll out the red carpet.

His ball control is superb, and as been said before, looks built for the Premiership. However it seems unlikely he would move unless Bayern dont' want him, which doesn't make sense seeing as how he's improved and is so versatile as well.

What a player he's become. This CM position is just perfect for him, he used to be an average/good winger but he's a top class midfielder.

wanted him after the last world cup when he was amazing on the right wing (i think it was 2006 or 2002?) but havent seen him play since, he has been playing amazing in that 3 man midfield for germany

Its a 4 man midfield, or a 2 man partnership of midfielders. Ozil is in the hole ala Berbatov in his first season at United. I suppose if you felt Berbatov was a midfielder, you could consider *Ozil and other in the hole players midfielders too. But they dont defend and thats part of a midfielder's job.

He's played very well in a midfield duo next to Khedeira. And he was playing in central midfield next to Van Bommel when Bayern played our midfield off the park. Same system but with Muller playing in the hole in front of him.

His performances in the world cup don't count. I wouldn't want him at United, people who think he's United quality have missed his bad Bayern seasons.

He was excellent for Bayern this season in his new role. He has excelled for both club and country. He previously played on the wing and it doesn't suit because he has feck all pace. He'd be a great holding midfielder for us. I reckon Chelsea will buy him eventually though.

I'm having a hard time understanding why it took so long before he was moved to the position he's most naturally suited to play in. I mean he was decent enough as a winger, but his skills always seemed to make him a much better candidate in the center of the park.

Maturity? Letting him gain experience outside of the central line is one way to easy him into it, I suppose. Anyways, always liked him as a player and rated him a fantastic prospect, and I've though I've not been following the Bundesliga I remember that it was considered a massive blow for Bayern when he was out of the first game among their fans. This, along with what I've read and the displays he's been putting on during the World Cup seems to indicate that he's grown to realize his potential, which is great!

Now, sign him up, if he completes our midfield and brings us back the trophy, it represents value ;)

Chelsea are meant to be after him and did you notice Lampard immediately going to him after the game yesterday? Smiles on both faces, something's going on..... :smirk:
