Not doubting his quality. But he's only played 25+ league games once in the last 4 years, and hasn't played 30+ since 2010/11. At 31, i'd imagine his injury problems aren't going to get any better.

Just think we might've learnt a lesson after signing an ageing and injury prone superstar name last season, which didn't really work out . . .

But as I said, if he helps us win the league - and he might - it'll be worth it.
Falcao was fit and available for most part of the season, wasn't he? His problem was that he was expected to score goals, lots of them. And he didn't even come close to achieving that.

Expectations from Schweiny will be different, though. And nothing from his performances of last season suggests that we won't meet those expectations

Bastian Schweinsteiger close to Manchester United move

Manchester United are close to completing the signing of Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich.

The 30-year-old is believed to have told Bayern he does not want to extend his contract, which runs to 2016.

The clubs are still to agree a fee, but United are prepared to give the World Cup winner a massive increase on his salary.

Schweinsteiger has made 536 appearances for Bayern since his debut in 2002.

Should the German arrive, it would be a significant statement of intent from the Old Trafford club, similar to the one they made last summer with the arrivals of Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid for £59.7m and the loan signing of Radamel Falcao from Monaco.

While Falcao has since moved to Chelsea after scoring only four goals for United and Di Maria was one of the players manager Louis van Gaal said on Friday "had problems" during his first season, their presence did underline a desire to reclaim the club's previous status in the Premier League.

Along with Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, Schweinsteiger was identified earlier this summer as a high-profile player United were interested in.

While the chances of Ramos ending up at Old Trafford are tied up in the future of goalkeeper David De Gea - a target for Real - Schweinsteiger is expected to end up as a United player.

The club have made only one signing so far this summer, with £31m winger Memphis Depay arriving from Dutch club PSV Eindhoven.

However, Italian defender Matteo Darmian is flying to England for a medical before completing a £13m move from Torino.

It is anticipated he will travel with United for their pre-season tour of the United States, which begins on Monday.

No new update. Just another news channel reporting it. Will hold on my excitement till something conclusive comes out

Still going with the idea of Depay costing £31m i see  How can such a respected news outlet be so consistent with getting fees wrong?

I actually feel the complete opposite to those saying we've lost our identity. We're Manchester United, and it feels great knowing some of the best talents in the world are finally playing for us. We should be linked with the careers of players like Schweinsteiger, Di Maria, Falcao, Mata...

Sure we sold Welbeck, Cleverley, but they weren't good enough. It's good to finally see us exercising the huge pulling power we have rather than persisting with inferior players for the sake of tradition.
The best talents who are aging, no longer required or wanted at their clubs, or are coming off the back of a serious injury they may not bounce back from?

oh the caf-disgusted three-man backline?
note that Darmian is a wing-back
Don't bet against it

But seriously, I think Carrick can do an excellent job as a CB in a flat back 4, when there's a midfield trio of Schweiny, Morgan and Herrera ahead of him.

People comparing him to falcao s situation. I mean I understand but if any one can adapt to the PL, it's bastian. I mean Herrera could adapt.

20m Euro for a player that turns 31 in 2 weeks.... Wow! He is a quality player though but I really think we should be looking to get a settled first 11 and signing injury prone players isn't going to help this. Especially given the fact that circa. 50% of our first 11 are also injury prone....

I will now wait and monitor SSN for signings of more phisio's.

This deal is done, bbc don't feck around.I have held my excitement until now to avoid disappointment he is ours.Next step official man united website. What a player we are about to sign,a proper leader. If we get morgan, new cb and a striker, bring them all on next year. This is exciting times for man united again.Chelsea we are coming for you,we want our trophy back!

Do you remember 06/07 when 36 year old Cafu and 39 year old Maldini handled young Rooney and Ronaldo comfortably? Before the game, we were all optimistic saying their speed will rip Milan defense apart. Rooney and Ronaldo had the speed alright but they were playing against seasoned experience players that have seen it all.

After Carrick got injured, we collapse. Not because we didn't have the quality to win those games, but we lacked the experience. You guys undervalue experience in a team and it's just criminal.

No if he becomes injury prone, no matter the experience it becomes a problem. Yea and let us not forget a year later this same set of players won the European cup. We lost to Milan because we run out players, and we were extremely tired that night we lost 3-0 to Milan. I'm glad we are signing him, but his possible injury's is still a concern. And kaka that night ripped us apart, and he was in his prime

It's not just injury problems keeping him out. Don't forget that, Alonso and Alcantara have been preferred ahead of Schweinsteiger. The main factor in him leaving.

Only at United could there be a number of fans who would be less than enthusiastic about the signing of this guy. He's top drawer ffs. An immense signing right where we need to upgrade. Get in.

He's 30 with 535 career games. Wayne 29 with 556 games.

Wayne had been in the EPL since he was 17. Adapting to a new league is tough and you cant teach new tricks to an old dog

He will improve the quality of our play and last season we dominated a lot of teams - albiet at times we had no balance and passed the ball sideways. Will be a good addition.

This is for me the biggest boost on this signing. Having (hopefully) one of Sweinsteiger/Carrick in midfield any one time. Someone right in the center to hold things together.

Still struggling to believe this. Basti was the best player on the pitch in the World Cup final a year ago. The idea he could be a United player soon..wow

I thought we signed a few old players and they did very well. Van Der Saar was like 31 also. Blanc came in like 33/34. Larsson was 35. No worries there. I'm hoping he does a Pirlo here and give us 3-4 good years while younger players like Herrera, Perreira, TFM, U21 CMs do the running from him while learning their craft & step up from the best. What's 10M pounds nowadays- when Andy Carrol cost 30 million pounds?

I fail to grasp how one cannot be excited by this! One of the best midfielders in the world, comes with experience like nobody else, didn't cost a fortune, could probably play 3-4 years more (like Scholes, Xavi, Pirlo). Doesn't rule out additional signings, it's all speculation. A smart player will succeed wherever he goes. As for the injury record, RvP was fit a full season after signing from Arsenal. It's more than physique, there are mental factors playing in as well.

There isn't a lot of adapting between the Bundesliga and the PL, both leagues are played at a high tempo, one of the difference will be that Bundesliga teams don't sit back, they come at you and try to disrupt your game through intense pressing.

The point is total number of games played for a player whose league feature 4 games less than the premier league and yet he's called "injury prone"

It's not just injury problems keeping him out. Don't forget that, Alonso and Alcantara have been preferred ahead of Schweinsteiger. The main factor in him leaving.

And that would be my worry. Not just the injury record. The fact that his performances might be on the decline. Which was the reason we got rid of Falcao, a younger player.

I guess there will always be people who take on unpopular opinions for the sake of it.

I had similar reservations to Falcao as I do about Schweinsteiger and people reacted exactly the same when I voiced them. Genuine shock and anger that I wasn't keen on buying a famous player just because he was fairly old and had injury problems.

I don't think the later will fail as badly as the former but then again at least that was only a loan (thank god) while this is a permanent signing.

I'm curious as to whether the love people have for this signing is due to them assuming we are buying Schneiderlin as well. Basically, will people be less impressed with this transfer if Schweinsteiger is the only midfielder we buy this summer?

I know I will.

I think had we already signed Schneiderlin the reaction to this would be almost universally positive, some people are just worried it means we won't get both.

He had the same amount of injuries he's had every season in his career, around 4. He just had a big one before the start of the season which made him miss a lot of games until November, like Carrick. Also I don't think Guardiola likes Schweisnteiger because he is too direct in his play compared to his other midfielders who are more careful with the ball.

Bastian is not injury prone. He's a beast.

Guys, enough with the injuries already. There's a reason we have professionals undertaking medical examinations. We're obviously not going to buy damaged goods, the rest it down to misfortune, management and other factors.

And that would be my worry. Not just the injury record. The fact that his performances might be on the decline. Which was the reason we got rid of Falcao, a younger player.
Well, according to Bayern fans, his performances aren't on a decline. You also have to factor in that Bayern have an embarrassment of riches in midfield. This is very different to the Falcao situation, who would have also cost something like four times what Bastian is going to cost.

There isn't a lot of adapting between the Bundesliga and the PL, both leagues are played at a high tempo, one of the difference will be that Bundesliga teams don't sit back, they come at you and try to disrupt your game through intense pressing.

In theory yes, in practice well....there weren't many German/Bundersliga players who were able to adapt to the EPL successfully.

Moan moan moan moan moan, he's one of the greatest midfielders of all time, just enjoy something for once in your miserable lives, ffs

He's 30 with 535 career games. Wayne 29 with 556 games.

You can't be serious. They both made their first team debuts in 2002, Rooney was 16 and Bastian S was 18. Rooney immediately became a mainstay with Everton, he played 77 games for them by the time he turned 18! You won't find many players who played more games than Rooney when they reached 29, not even Carrick who's on 613 at 34.
