On his last four seasons he has played: 36, 45, 36 and 28 games. An average of 36 matches per season. For comparison, on his last four seasons before his initial retirement, Scholes played 34, 35, 38 and 33 matches or 35 matches on average per season (bear in mind that Schweini averages around 10 matches for Germany, something that Scholes didn't). No-one ever said that Scholes was a player who got injured a lot.

Schweini isn't injury prone. Last year was his only season when he had injury problems. Still played 28 games though.

Schweinsteiger has been injured for over a quarter of Bayerns' games in three of the last four seasons and he was only slightly better in the other one. A big decline in a player who was virtually ever present in his early to mid twenties. His injury problems are also increasing, last season was worse than the year before and that was worse than the season before that. It seems likely to me this trend will continue given his age and moving to a league where he won't have the winter off to recuperate.

It's been 70 years, I guess it's cool.

However, he's not quite the player he once was and I can't see him not spending a lot of time in the Phil Jones Wing of Hargreaves Memorial. But if we're signing him in addition to Morgan, rather than instead of, this could be a shrewd bit of business.

We let English teams play in Germany, 70 years after you bombed the place inside out.
What a stupid comment.

Yes. I originally made this then read the rumors and spent the next hour or so re-doing the gif:

Fantastic man. Brillant job.
On that fine note I will leave you all. Have fun with Basti.

And treat him well or I will hunt you down. :nervous::nono::devil:;)

The biggest thing for me is Schweinsteiger brings a shedload of experience, it's something that is critical to the perceived United identity. Players like Cantona, Bruce, Giggs etc. need to be there for younger kids to develop and learn off.

He was incredible in that game, only a year ago. Some people might have their reservations, but the reality is that we're signing a world class midfielder who is 30 years old (turning 31). It's not that old, and he's somebody who always steps it up in big games. Well finally have a real leader in midfield again

This is kinda funny . Schweinsteiger turning 31 is not old , yet van Persie turning 32 is an old man !!!

I will cream my pants repeatedly if this transfer as expected goes through........Schweini is a symbol of German efficiency and a symbol of what you can achieve through sweating blood.......He'd be the first ever first team German at Man Utd......He would just be an awesome signing

This truly is a great day, my first post in the mains and we are about to land Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Good signing if true.

If we also got Schneiderlin and Otamendi, and kept De Gea for one more year that would be a very decent summer.

We've lost our identity. We're turning into galactico wannabes.

Might not be a bad thing to be honest. We are actually getting quality players, our football is not terrible and this path has proven to be successful by the likes of Chelsea and City, so this new found identity can actually be more rewarding then our old one.

On the possibility of signing sweinstiger, I believe he is not what we need, but he will be an exciting signing like Falcao and Di Maria.

No, just not a hypocrite. I remember when everyone used to criticize Real for this, now they lap it all up.

The main criticism towards Real's galactico transfer strategy is signing players they don't actually need, just for the sake of buying stars. Not comparable at all with what's happening at United. Signing established, world class players is actually a thing we should have been doing a lot more in the past years, as we're one of the biggest clubs in the world.

It's not like we've stopped signing young players with potential, so nothing wrong with signing Schweiny at all. He'd add the invaluable experience and leadership that our team has been lacking since Vidic, Evra and Rio left.

How many more years does he have in him? Is he likely to go through physical decline any time soon?

Put it this way, I'm sad to see him go. He still has two good years in him, he wants to win the Euro on top of WC, so he'll work for that. After that it'll be over.

Yep, buying a player for €18 million is exactly the same as Madrid and their transfer dealings. Well spotted.

Good signing, as long as we still get Schneiderlin. Not best pleased if it was one or the other though.

What a strange summer. We're about to sign a player that I've wanted us to buy for years. I don't care how old he is, I'm too chuffed to care.

Holy shit! Been away for a few hours and when I return, it has exploded.

YYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! :drool::drool::drool::drool:

This would be an absolutely superb signing, for so many reasons. Can't believe anyone would criticize it. If we don't sign Schneidi because of it, I'll be a bit disappointed and it would be a downside, I guess, but still not enough to be negative about this. Bastian bloody Schweinsteiger!

Schneiderlin and Otamendi to top off Darmain and Bastian (aswell as Depay) would make it a quality window.

He's only 30, and he is a player who has never relied that much on his pace or physical abilities, kind of like Carrick. I imagine him performing at his best level for at least 3 more seasons if he avoids serious injuries.

I've been hitting F5 like a maniac all summer, and finally some reward. This is on par with the signing of RvP!

Just one more post on this topic before I go to bed.

While I do have heavy reservations about this signing I can also see some positives. A right footed defensive midfielder to replace Carrick was vital so we at least went for the right sort of player. He has been a brilliant player in the past and under our current manager to boot. Finally he's got a great attitude, I don't see him treating us as his retirement home where he will be content just to collect his big pay cheque for a few years, if he doesn't perform it won't be for lack of effort.
