Barca trying to terminate the contracts of Umtiti and Pjanic

Covid means that salary caps are even more important. Barca have clearly been spending above their means for years; their wage to revenue ratio is crazy and unsustainable; it’s finally come back to bite them hence why they were keen for the Super League to work.
I think that’s rank favouritism towards the big clubs. If they feck up their books by overpaying players they should bear the brunt of it and go into administration. None of this hand holding “oh we’re gonna try and get you to spend in your means to protect you”.

Surely the figure of Barca needing to trim their wage bill by €200m is wrong? I'm guessing that's annual. That works out at over 19 players salaries to get rid of if they were each on €200k a week.

I'm thinking it is actually €200k a week.

Or just not renew Messi's.

Easy choice, sell Camp Nou.

yeah, the wage bill is something like £250m a year so they could need to get rid of £50m a year which is either 1 Messi or 5 players like Umtiti and Pjanic who are all on over £200k

Isn't he in something 110m+/year?

Well Boris is saying full capacity stadiums in 2 weeks, so I think Spain will be sometime similar, so financial pressure on clubs will hopefully start to ease.

Barca have spent worse than anyone over the past 5 years. Griezmann(although slightly improving) , Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele, Pjanic have all been astronomical disasters.

Those in the Messi camp could argue that it's not fair that he takes a hit for the clubs disastrous and reckless spending.

We're paying almost €400,000 a week for a washed up keeper, who has lost his hunger to fight, to warm the bench. Nodody is asking him to take a pay cut, and yet we're half a billion in debt too!
You say that but literally everyone has had a pay cut enforced on them and others are being forced out because of the mess & ffp. Messi knows all this and still doesn’t drop his demands. For someone who was going to be a legend at Barca because of his playing abilities he’s sure trying to mess it up by not doing his bit when the club really need him too

I wouldn’t rely on full grounds to bail anyone out, especially not Barca. Presumably they already put that in their forecasting and they know that they are fecked unless they take drastic action. Besides, there’s no guarantee those stadiums won’t be in lockdown again come winter

Read that Matheus Fernandes (who?) Is looking to sue Barca for terminating his contract after buying him in Jan '20 for €7m (rising to €10m).

Surely they can't go round terminating contracts on a whim? Seems Barca are heading for some serious problems unless they sell one of their gems like Fati because no one is going to help them out by taking their deadwood.

They simply need to allow that they cant keep Messi.

Seems like there is quite a few potentially good deals to be done for a few clubs this summer, even clubs that before only could dream of buying players from Barcelona - especially players Barcelona even want to keep from a sporting perspective.

Wouldn't be surprised if City end up with the likes of Pedri and De Jong. Only stumbling block probably would be that Guardiola don't want to take advantage of his favourite club's dire situation.

They probably think even a small chance of winning the case is good enough.

I don't get the blame for this being put on Messi by so many posters.

Don't get me wrong Barca seem pretty fecked right now and it's their own fault, trying to keep a 34 year old player, no matter how good he is at the expense of the rest of the team is clearly wrong. But the club have every opportunity to say sorry Leo we're moving on, they do not have to pay him what he wants, every other team manages without him!

If Barca want to pull themselves together, I think they need to say thanks and goodbye to Messi and start the rebuild here, they have the basis of a very good team with Fati, Pedri, De Jong, Depay, Aguero etc it's a nice mix of talented youth and experience, they may drop off a bit but that's a rebuild. Desperately hanging onto Messi is ripping the club apart, but that's the clubs choice, not Messi's.

See fans like Daysleeper and then imagine a whole fan base of them.

This club needs major punishment for how they tried to run this business.

800k a week for Griezemann always amazes me. He was very good at Atletico but not worth destroying the whole wage structure (not including Messi) for.

Shambles of a club. But I just have this feeling they’ll find a way to get out of it.

Haven’t really been keeping an eye on this whole situation but realistically what players are people actually expecting to go and what’s a likely line up going to look like for Barca next year? Will they reinvest, albeit on lesser paid players?

Should add up to €671m, that was the prior to Covid cap and Barcelona used 100% of it I think.

Those numbers must be way too low.

Conceivably those are net amounts, after tax. Gross is double maybe, that would make sense.

I was clearly not engaging in some sematic economic argument of economic value vs market value (or market price or whatever). Mispricing is when economists realise they are largely making shit up as they go along because Messi (for e.g.) is worth/paid/whatever more than their calculations can explain. The market price is however what Barca are going to pay as he is at the end of his contract and anyone can make him an offer so it is an open free market.

Yeah, no. Market price is only a relevant term when you talk about standardized products (such as commodities) and Messi is as specialized/niches as it goes. Market prices are a result of supply and demand - Messi is in short supply while demand is low as well (due to systematic barriers such as lack of funding). I'm not saying he isn't worth what he is requesting, I'm just saying Barca are making a big mistake by accommodating him via wholesale changes.

I'm trying to understand your point of view but I failed.

It's after tax.

Gotta love how when we sign players it's always with the tax included to make us look like we're paying way over the market but when report Spanish and Italian teams the salary after tax deduction.

Wtf! De Jong is on 400K a week at 22 years of age?

They deserve everything coming their way. More than a club my ass. If that's the case you should have some leverage in salary negotiations.

Big fan of paying Sergi Roberto 200k a week also

Més que un club, is about the place of Barcelona in catalan culture. It's not about football.

There's surely some spillover there. As in playing for Barca should mean more than playing for a club with less cultural heritage.

Not in the context of Més que un club and catalanismo unless for some reason foreign players suscribe to it. Even among catalan people it's not unanimously followed or respected, among players I'm only sure about Guardiola and Oleguer being concerned by it, basically a minority of catalan players.

Time for a cheeky bid for Frenkie and test Barca's resolve. Finances look so comically bad that even the non-Messi crown jewels must be for sale. FdJ would be a stellar signing for us.

I'd even take a punt on Dest too as an attacking alternative to AWB.

Exactly. They're just making sure Frenkie is paid just enough for him to put food on the table. Assuming he's paying the Barcelona player tax rate of 0% then he's on about £17,777,000 annually.

The ingredients of the perfect bacon sandwich costs £1.58; 4 rashers of Denhay dry cured smoked back bacon is £1.07, 1 Crosta & Mollica wrap is £0.40, 2% of a 650ml bottle of Heinz ketchup is £0.04 and 2% of 500g of Lurpak spreadable is £0.07.

The money he's on annually is equivalent to roughly 11,251,266 bacon sandwiches. Assuming that Catalonia has a fair few vegetarians and people who don't eat bacon for health/religious regions, that's probably enough for 2 bacon sarnies for people in the region.

I think that puts things into perspective.

hard pass. there's no way in hell we should be paying 350k a week for a 22 yr old mf that's not even a top player yet, our wage structure would be completely ruin. Save that money for a top striker next summer.
