Barca make official bid for David Luiz.....

This is worse, it's a rival club and the majority of us have seen enough of the player to suggest he's a stocking of shite at times.
I generally agree, but I suppose he did gave a good run of form in the 2012 CL.

But yeah, the more you consider this, the stupider it sounds.

He's a better midfielder than a defender, and I'd have him at United, but Chelsea would never sell us a player without wanting Rooney in return.

I think the whole "Luiz can't defend" thing is blown way out of proportion. I don't think he's anywhere near as much of a calamity at the back as he was in his first season. He's not quite the thinking man's defender like Rio, but he's very good at diving in and making last-ditch tackles like Vidic or Puyol. A real stopper. I think his defending has definitely improved since being in the Premier League, and he's young enough to improve further. His ability on the ball makes him a very good option to play in midfield with actual purpose too, and not in a utility-player sort of way.

I'd have him at United any day.
The rio myth continues.

"Thinking man's defender"

Yeah, that vidic is just fecking daft.

We got more chance of getting Fellaini than him, can't see Chelsea accepting our bid unless we include Rooney in the deal.

Rio is an excellent reader of the game. He's not the type to go diving in and throwing his body infront of everything. He's more of a right place right time defender. Very tactically astute. The mental side of his game is much more prominent than the physical side. I don't think that is such an outrageous opinion. I don't remember saying Vidic is "daft" either, but he's certainly more of a gung-ho stopper who will throw his body infront of shots, make the last ditch challenge - cynical or otherwise - and stick his head into awkward aerial challenges, as does Luiz, or Puyol. I'm not saying that's all there is to his game, but he boasts more physicality than Rio does, in my opinion of course. Feel free to correct me where you think I may be wrong.

He has the same problem in midfield than he does in defence, he still lets his man go and is capable of just completely switching off. At least as a center back he has the potential to be brilliant as he showed in the confederations cup, don't think he's shown anything in cm to make me think he's any good there.

Jesus christ.

I think I'm just about done with silly season now. Next Monday can't come soon enough.

We only sign players with silly hair these days.

I think it'd be easier for the papers to write back page stories on players we're not linked with rather than the ones we are.

They're both excellent readers of the game. If vidic wasn't an excellent reader of the game, he'd have been a mess in this league given his lack of pace. The reason why vidic goes in hard is not because his positioning isn't great, rather because he is naturally more aggressive and a better tackler as well as due to his lack of pace whereas rio is less aggressive, not as good a tackler but quicker which allows him to stay upright and let the defender make his move. They are basically different kind of defenders. To suggest rio is the "thinking mans defender" as opposed to the likes of vidic is completely immaculate. Maybe you feel he's slightly better at reading the game but your stamens suggests a very significant gulf which is crazy talk IMO.

What myth? Rio's a superb reader of the game.
Who argued otherwise? And vidic isn't?

So many people here have felt he's was the best defender around for a decent while before his injuries. So what the best defender in the world wasn't a superb reader of the game? The way that post is framed, you'd think he's a bit average at it.

What's this got to do with Vidic? You said "The Rio myth". I'm asking you what this myth is.

The myth is about rio in relation to other defenders. That he's so much better at certain things than defenders who are considered to be roundabout his equals. Also there's a myth here that's he's basically this perfect defende who unlike other defenders considered roundabout his equals, has no weakness at all. It's all a bit silly IMO.

@amol we know you think Vidic is better. You needn't bring it up on the basis of a throwaway line in a thread about David Luiz.

Ah right, well I'd say that whilst some are guilty of making other defenders out to be cloggers compared to Rio you were just as guilty with your myth comment but the other way around.

Rio has his faults, everyone does. But when it comes to reading play and movement then I haven't seen better. That doesn't make Vidic shit at it, just not as good.

Sky is going on about some £30 million bid. Now, I actually think Luiz is a good player but, £30m? Crazy.

£30million for Sideshow Bob?

That's it I'm done, no more indulging in this muppetry. The deadline can't come soon enough.

It's a nothing story. Completely fabricated. Move on.

Luiz is an excellent player in my view. Again, another player who would immediately become a top player on the caf if he signed for us I think.
