Barca make official bid for David Luiz.....

I like that Barcelona are finding is as difficult to find a defender as we are a midfielder.

Wait, we're over stacked in defence and they're over stacked in midfield you say? If only we were interested in one of their midfielders? Such a shame...

Cock firmly out.

I think the whole "Luiz can't defend" thing is blown way out of proportion. I don't think he's anywhere near as much of a calamity at the back as he was in his first season. He's not quite the thinking man's defender like Rio, but he's very good at diving in and making last-ditch tackles like Vidic or Puyol. A real stopper. I think his defending has definitely improved since being in the Premier League, and he's young enough to improve further. His ability on the ball makes him a very good option to play in midfield with actual purpose too, and not in a utility-player sort of way.

I'd have him at United any day.

Do you hate it when the term is thrown about around United players who aren't quite as good as the Cafe thinks they are? :p

Hes a very gifted player, but never a defender. If we get anything over 30 million for him it'd be a great deal. We dont need attacking players( other than a striker) we need a solid CB. that big cash injection can be used to fund Rooney/Mangala and continue our co-operation with FFP.

Yep, I hate it when players like Jones and Smalling are branded as great too. They are young players with potential, far off from greatness.

I agree with the rest of your post. Very good player but not a top CB. 30mil for him and you'd be laughing all the way to the bank.

He's a good footballer, but not a very good defender, so I don't really see Chelsea being that much worse off if it happens. They'll buy someone, maybe Mangala and probably become more solid as a result.

Nope, I'd concur with that assessment. Don't even think he should be starting for Brasil, tbh. But he has good leadership qualities

Mangala will, inexplicably, go for something around what Luiz will.

Either way, it's a disastrous selection after missing out on both Marquinhos & Silva (Twice)

Luiz and Pique is not a backline that fits you with much confidence

Barca have also launched a bid for Daniel Agger, according a Danish news outlet which is usually very reliable when it comes to inside information on Danish football.

My bro-in-law is an avid Barca fan and the general consensus is that their defense has been so rubbish for the last two years that they would happily fork out up to €50m on Luiz. Mental.

What does he say about Fabregas? What do the fans think of him and a potential move? Perhaps in the proper thread.

Guardian says the bid was £35m and instantly rejected. cnuts Chelsea, can't they see accepting it will get us Fabregas and them Rooney!

I find it hard to believe that Barca would bid 35 million for Luiz and Chelsea would actually reject it.

This transfer window is certainly promising to have one hell of a climax.

Can you remember a time when so many big players were under discussion?

Bale, Rooney, Luiz, Suarez...Fabregas (ahem)

True, I am indeed, on occasion, embarrassed by the club's dominance in this era
Yeah, that just flew right over your head, didn't it?

Embarrassing.

Chelsea only get to find out the value of the bid if they accept it. New negotiating tactic.

So the new manager says he doesn't know anything about a bid for Luiz. How legit is this "official" bid? I'd have thought that the new manager saying he has no idea about a bid for a player is unlikely to make him want to join

If barca come knocking, you the player doesnt need the manager to say anything about the player to convince him to go. Luiz will know if its a real bid, he would have known it was coming weeks ago. He'll be a first team player straight away, no decision to make

Didnt Guardiola have a similar situation with that hairy Russian centre half a few years back?

Not going anywhere it seems;

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has stated that the club will reject any offers for defender David Luiz.
The Brazilian international has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona but Mourinho is adamant the 26-year-old will not be leaving Stamford Bridge.
The Chelsea boss said: "No chance he is going to leave. He is a player we want to keep. He is a player with four years (on his) contract, he just signed a contract last year.
"We like him. He is an important player for the club and the club is not ready to sell him for any price."

Sounds bullshit. But if there was the slightest interest by United in such a player then it must mean they have a huge lack of faith in Smalling and Jones.

After Fellaini and Luiz, I wouldn't be surprised to see Moyes bid for Carlos Valderrama next.
