Bands that music snobs think are crap, but really aren't that bad

Seeing as U2 are central to this particular debate can anybody who hates them maybe illustrate why that's the case.

What is it that is so bad about them?

For a rock band they have a huge body of work behind them so it should'nt be difficult to highlight where you think they are so lacking.

Forget the Bono political connection just stick to the music - why are they so so terrible ?

For me they are a great band still able to knock up a great tune tune. They also, like almost all bands, knock up some rubbish too but generally they have a high standard set from the first album and have pretty much kept close to that. They are real musicians who play their instruments to a high standard and therefore absolutely cut it live and putting on barnstorming live shows

With the main guitarist they have they are responsible for creating more than just a 'song' but a sound too so from my own perspective they are a fine band who have not fallen by the wayside or rested upon their laurels.

I dont 'love' them as such and there are other bands I prefer but for me it's easy to like what they have done and what they now do

How are they so terrible ?

I can think of other bands who have, shall we say, contributed far less to the vast and rich rock music catalogue that most of us so enjoy

I don't think they`re terrible. I don't have to run to the radio and switch it off if one of their songs come on like I do Take That, Nickleback or the Kaiser Cheifs. The Joshus Tree and The Unforgettable Fire were really good albums. It's just that they've released nothing memorable for years and their time has past. They`re now boring, ordinary and way over-hyped.

Except two out of their last three albums were excellent and the new one is pretty good too. Ordinary were the first album you recommended which was basically a man screaming into the microhpone with little sense or talent for 'singing'.

If it's proper singing you want check out an Allman Bros Band album. Gregg Allman had an amazing voice.

I'm sure he has. But at least one of you're recommendations on a first listen was absolute nonsense. It was like a poor mans scream.

No it wasnt any of those, im trying to remember which one it was. Rather forgetful band, although ill admit i heard very little of them and they probably deserve another few hearings.

Many music snobs think The Shaggs are shit just because they're incredibly crap at playing music, but they're actually quite good. But they don't have a public persona, so I'm not sure if they qualify.

U2 were ok until a couple of decades ago, then they became incredibly boring. Oasis and Coldplay have always been incredibly boring, except when I was young and stupid, and Queen have only recorded two or three good songs, but I think I prefer them to Oasis and Coldplay. Being annoying is better (and less annoying) than being boring.

Are you talking about the Iron and Wine he recommended to me in the Architecture in Helsinki thread?

They're quite good I thought.
