Bands that music snobs think are crap, but really aren't that bad

I also don't care if the frontman of the band is an annoying tit. As long as they play good music it shouldnt make a difference. Its not a personality contest.

How old are you?

I'm 22 and my mates, even the most ardent Indie rock snobs, are fairly partial to Queen in an ironic way.

However Indie rock types who grew up in the 80s hate them with a vengance.

Why The Clash? I'm a bit surprised by some of the bands being mentioned in here. Obviously the obligatory Oasis/Coldplay/U2 hate was to be expected from this sort of thread, but The Clash surprised me.

And it makes me laugh how a thread started to point out how snobs are wrong about certain bands has been taken over by nauseatingly pretentious posts about how 'you just can't take [insert overly popular band] seriously once you've been enlightened by Radiohead'.

I didn't start the thread to prove that snobs are wrong, I started it for a laugh to see who'd stick their necks out and admit to singing along to the odd Coldplay song. I also sort of wanted to see if there'd be any particularly obtuse U2/Coldplay/Queen/Oasis types who'd wander in, do a double take and respond with a post along the lines of 'WTF? There are people who don't like U2/Coldplay/Queen/Oasis?'

On that note, I've been a bit surprised with the number of people who've never encountered any Queen hatred. I must drift in different circles.

Indie Rock? That must be as big an oxymoron as Melodic Death Metal. I can just imagine the sort of shit they listen to as well. With Pitchfork and the NME as their bible of course. I can`t think of many things worse than students liking things in "ironic" ways either.

I'm aware of the contradictions in defining anything as 'Indie Rock', but it's an expression that comes with a certain set of associations in contemporary usage, and serves the purposes of using it well enough.

What shit do you reckon they listen to?

Why is it pretentious? It`s like let`s say you have no idea who Girls Aloud are and you`re introduced to Nicola, Sarah, Kimberley and Nadine. You`re like wow, these are the fittest women ever. And then Cheryl walks in and suddenly the other four, who were gorgeous are now just a bit ordinary.

Oasis and Coldplay are the female equivalent of Sarah Harding or the cinema equivalent of Shawshank or The Usual Suspects. They`re ok, but when you see them on any best of or favourite lists i`m always wtf??

What shit do you reckon they listen to?

Difficult one. If they`re snobs i`m thinking not The Killers or Arctic Monkeys. Maybe Modest Mouse or Animal Collective. Death Cab for Cutie? If they have taste Bloc Party or Editors.

Where the feck did you get The Killers from? Whatever 'Indie Rock' may be, I'm fairly confident that the Killers represent the exact opposite ethic. Death Cab are regarded as a bit of a joke too.

I'm the only one who likes the Arctic Monkeys out of my friends. Most of them like Modest Mouse but I can't stand them. Crap melodies and screeched vocals are not my bag.

They like Bloc Party and the Editors, yeah.

EDIT: I just realised you said 'NOT' the killers. Never mind.

The Killer are fecking awful, their lead singer was moaning that they're not liked because people are still latching on to music from the 60s.

People like Hendrix, Morrison, Dylan had/have more talent in their arsehole than that Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime.

People like Hendrix, Morrison and Dylan had more talent in their arseholes than most of the planet.

Like all the bands I mentioned in the original post, the Killers suffer by comparision to the greats, are hated by people who compare them to the greats, loved by people who don't know the greats (in some cases, not all), but IMO, are listenable.

No doubt. I liked Mr Brightside but they need hanging for that Human abomination. Worst song i`ve heard this year.

Is that the 'are we human, or are we dancer' one?

I pissed myself when I heard that lyric.

I thought Disentigration was released in 1990 (I would call that 90's) but it seems it was released in 1989 so yeah...probably not a top class album in the 90's then.
The last three albums have all been good but not top class imo with the self titled album being the best of those three.

Wish was first rate, released mid 90's. Suffered in music circles for being too radio friendly. Songs are just so damn catchy. Wild Mood Swings was good as well, though not in the same class. I fail to see how any of the last three offerings have disappointed. And I maintain that Bloodflowers is every bit as good as Disintegration or Head in the Door, and more grown up to boot.

If somebody thinks Dire Straits are crap they are not so much a music snob, rather a music knob. The Straits are an amazingly talented band.

Heh, there's another football forum I post on where the general forum is dominated, through some bizzare coincidence, by the most militant music snobs I've ever seen gathered in one e-place. Dire Straits are among the perfectly decent bands that get panned on there. Pearl Jam and Queen are among them too.

Dire Straits are a great band

Yup, I'm glad Dumbo mentioned them actually - I reckon their quite under-rated in some respects.

Dire Straits, Pearl Jam and Queen are all brilliant bands, I guess those posters are all tone deaf Westlife fans.

Go on then who do they specify as 'great bands'

In any one music thread on that place there's liable to be at least a dozen artists I've never even heard the names of, never mind the music.

Scandinavian Death Metal and the such? Or random indie shit? Perhaps there just making them up and pretending to be pretty bohemian when it comes to music.

Doesn't take a band the quality of Radiohead to render wank like Oasis useless.

Heh - Indie is a strange term, technically should only apply to un-signed bands or atleast is what I was led to believe by fellow 'indie' fans.

Tip: Place 'indie' within speech marks and no criticism can be placed on you. "Indie" "Indie" "Indie"

Aye, but like most of the words in the English language, it's taken on new meanings and associations that are readily identifiable by a lot of people. feck quotation marks.

feck quotation marks. :nono:..."feck" quotation marks = :D

Yup most words evolve, bands like to coin themselves as Indie nowadays simply to seem cool and with, or basically attractive to the student audience. The minute a band has a commercially successful song in my eyes they've dropped the Indie tag and are either pop or rock or whatever.

No, it`s just there a millions of bands out there not in the mainstream. And Scandinavian DM is horrible.

I'm 21.

Can I just go on record and say Beethoven was shite? just because he was death nobody had the courage to tell him he's horrible, and it caught on from there.
