Bands that music snobs think are crap, but really aren't that bad

I'd just like to go on record and say that Queen are absolutely fecking dreadful.

U2 and Coldplay are banal but inoffensive, so not a bad shout.

My nomination for BTMSTACBRATB would be Snow Patrol.

Snow Patrol are my nomination for BTMSTACBTAC

Music snobbery rules.

feck listening to queen, james last, journey, stryper, damien dempsey, bon jovi or the clash.

you can't think music snobbery rules and *** the clash, they are the musicians musicians, the punk's punks and the best band that ever walked the earth.

People like Hendrix, Morrison and Dylan had more talent in their arseholes than most of the planet.

Dylan is not like Morrison, Dylan is a fecking genius Morrison was a good looking pretentious cock. The Doors are vastly overrated and woudl not have been half as famous without Jim's supreme ability to look good in learther troosers.

A great talent and almost unrivalled fromtman but he's not in the same league as Dylan, the only thing they have in common is the 60's.

Fkinell ................ dare I say this :nervous:

I used to hate Take That but actually in their more recent incarnation they've penned some cracking tunes lately although not so much the very recent album

They are also annoying - they've still got that quality! but credit where its due a very good tune here and there

It's all personal taste though, isn't it. There are very few bands you can actually describe as bad just because you don't like them yourself.

U2 are magnificent, and i'm not referring to the new song that out.

I dont understand the vitrol directed towards them here. They're a terrific band that is brilliant live and they've got the lot - great melodies, excellent lyrics and contrary to popular caf believe, soul or meaning.

Yes apparently we hate them because Bono wants to make Africa a better place to live in.

I like all sorts of rock and at times something outside of that genre but for me they're the complete package of melodies, lyrics, hard, soft, poetic, ridiculous etc

Also, why is Queen there? They were a terrific band. Freddy Mercury had one of the best voices ever. The man was a vocal god.

I saw Queen doing the Live killers set at the Free Trade Hall and they were brilliant live. A mate of mine who didn't really like them came and has been a massive Queen fan since. Freddie was not only a brilliant vocalist but a superb showman.

How old are you?

I'm 22 and my mates, even the most ardent Indie rock snobs, are fairly partial to Queen in an ironic way.

However Indie rock types who grew up in the 80s hate them with a vengance.

I'm an Indie rock type who grew up in the 80s and I think they were brilliant. And Queen themselves always gave the impression of being camp pop glam rock with a huge dollop of irony thrown in.

Also, why is Queen there?

Because of arrogance regarding musical taste, that's why.

Some people have the opinion that only the stuff they like is any good.

I don't like jazz and I don't like opera...so I suppose I should call it crap.

People don't like Pearl Jam?

My only complaint is that they seem to have intentionally distanced themselves from producing the kind of music we know they can. Still good but imo lacking that final edge. This first became apparent to me on Vitalogy.

I prefered Nirvana at the time but still like Pearl Jam a great deal.

MY NOMINATION: DAVID GRAY, unfortunate to spawn such shite as james blunt et all but he himself has some amazing songs, "debauchery" is fecking brilliant, give it a listen if you dont know it. he has gone off the rails lately though

I have to say that only the arrival of James Blunt has saved David Gray from being my nomination for the blandly annoying music of the millenium award.

U2 made a couple of really good albums in the 80s but since then they`ve been just some bloated stadium rock band. No innovation, no soul. I suppose they`re a non-metal version of Metallica.

Queen also made like two or three good albums. But their discography spanned summat like fifteen records. Not a good strike rate. But they were great live. Probably the non-hard rock version of KISS.

Coldplay and Oasis are difficult to take seriously once you`ve heard The Bends or OK Computer.

KISS?

I think its also a bias thing, knocking something down before giving it a chance. I've given rap a chance, and personally cant stand it. But thats one whole genre that just doesnt interest me one bit. I cant for my life understand why u2 arent appreciated here. Everyone i know, and there isnt any lack of musical sophistication amongst them, loves them or at the least likes them.

If its a bono thing its even sillier, at least the man does try to make a difference. Cobain was a scrawny depressed man who killed himself, Morrisson came across as a werdo with his stage antics at times and his self indulgant preachyness and Pink Floyd believed every single of their tunes was apparently a hollywood epic and had to be performed in the same vain. Let me make it clear, i LOVE these bands, but they alll have their flaws and they're all allowed to trip and fall over their own feet a little to make a little magic.

Its become popular here to dislike U2. All i can say is dont let others cloud your judgement, listen to music on those little things we call headphones and let the band speak directly to you. With this band i did, and i fell in love. And the brilliant part is my brother had slated them before i bough the album so i first heard them with a bit of my bias. Now hes a huge fan too.

Magnificent :)

I prefered Nirvana at the time but still like Pearl Jam a great deal.

Nirvana, another outstanding band. But why dont musica snobs think they're crap? Their lyrics were exactly genius and Cobain wasnt a great guitarist by any stretch of imagination. Mind you, theyre one of my favorites, i think Nirvana were the best at what they did and when it comes to individual front men, i rate him as one of the very best.

I am a huge Clash fan but they weren't that good musicians.

maybe not technically, but they were punk and the sound they made was perfect and they were gift in the studio, not a note out of place on London Calling and their knowledge of all genres was huge

fecking hell what a moronic statement that is. Jesus H Christ.

Great Guitarists = Clapton, Knopfler, Hendrix, SRV, B.B King, J.J Cale, Duane Allman

Ok Guitarists = Cobain, The Edge, Frusciante etc.

I have every major Nirvana release and a fair portion of their more obscure stuff and even I wouldn't go as far as to say he was a great guitarist.

He wrote beautiful, memorable riffs but technically he was fairly average. I got the impression that the reason they brought in Pat Smear during the In Utero period was, in football parlance, to add a bit of class to the line up.

Whether being able to conceive great riffs allows him a claim to being a great guitarist in and of itself is another debate.

I agree Melbourne, he was pretty technically average to be honest although he did sort of pioneer that grunge tone, he has a recognisable sound but any guitarist worth his salt can imitate/better him.

It`s not a Bono thing. On one of Bill Bailey`s stand-up shows that has been on CH4 he took them and in particular The Edge off perfectly. I`ve looked for a YouTube link but can`t find it. As soon as you see it you know that`s why U2 are wank.

That's all well and good and I have issues with U2 but Bill Bailey is technically a better musician than 90% of acts anyway. Of course he can recreate them.

Perfect. Case closed.

I didnt know that if some bloke makes fun of a band their music, automatically, becomes shit.

I've heard a few comedians make fun of Dylan's way of speaking. He must be shit too then.

Comedians rip on celebrities all the time, do you actually get influenced by that so much so that you start hating the celebrity?

I got no problems if you don't like U2, but giving a Bill Bailey bit as your main reason is plain stupid.

as in every music thread, Nearco talks an immense amount of bollocks.

actually, that might just well be every thread. ;)

How the feck would you know. Have you ever listened to some of the bands i`ve recommended.

What really gets me on threads like these are complete shit for brains like sidsutton coming on spouting off and not even mentioning what they listen to, not bothering to make any recommendations.

Put up or shut up dipshit.

I don't find Bill Bailey remotely funny.

(Should that be in the Confessions thread?)

Oh right, i just saw a youtube click that convinced me my favorite band is 'wank'. Spastic.

If you'd heard enough of them you would have realised he wasnt a brilliant guitarist. His strength was in the ideas he had and the array of talents he had.

If your favourite band is U2 I think it`s fair to say it`s you who the spastic is. In the 80s and 90s when you actually had to make an effort to uncover new music I could understand most people having shit taste. Nowadays there really isn`t an excuse for it. It`s like thinking Holby City is the cutting edge of television drama.
