€50m on Laporte? €60m on Mangala, €50m on Otamendi
They will have Kompany and I thought the Denayer kid was supposed to be top class.
I was speaking with a City fan a couple of weeks ago. He was insisting the youth academy will flourish under Pep. They are in for a shock. Pep is there to do a job. Won't be surprised if he's demanding top talent round the clock.

Not bothered if Laporte goes to City, but I can understand why Pep would want him. Bilbao are playing a pressing game as well, so Laporte wouldn't need much time to adapt to Pep's tactics.

If Guardiola wants Laporte we should be going all out for him. I don't want two right footer as CB. It can work but it can be terrible. A right footer on the left side was how we got a penalty against Liverpool this season. They end up trying to tackle with their wrong foot.

LVG is that you? Rio + Vidic, Carvalho + Terry.....

Mind you €50m for Laporte is value.

Until LvG came I never gave the whole RCB/LCB thing a second thought, there are lots of right footed CB pairings. In the case of Koulibaly he plays on the left side of the partnership for Napoli very well but is right footed.

Those were/are good pairings, but Smalling has been good, but can be erratic or has been recently. I would like another top class CB to play with him. Blind is not a CB, Jones is a accident waiting to happen defensive wise and to himself. Rojo is a backup. Sign Stones and Laporte and we will be set for years. They won't though. They will scrimp on CB and try to buy a big glamour name elsewhere and not get them. I hope they learn from their mistakes.

I will answer, Van der Sar. Since it's about passing angles and being able to bring the ball out without hoofing it, the best option is to have players strong with the left and the right foot. In reality if both CBs are right footed and one of them is great with his left foot Van gaal is happy.

So is Stones good with his left foot, or is Smalling good with his left foot?

I would hope it is Stones, otherwise wouldn't it be wise to buy a right footer who has already shown he can play on the left side, not just buy one and hope he can.

Definitely, someone who is comfortable on the left should be a priority if we are after a CB. But I like Rojo, I wasn't a fan when we signed him but he has something.
 
If we weren't in dire need of players in so many positions, I think Laporte AND Stones should be the way to go.

Hopefully we get one of them though. I dare say City will get one too.

What's Bilbao's defense like? I haven't really seen any of Laporte this season. I think Stones will blossom under a coach who understands defense though, Martinez is very poor in this respect.
 
I keep reading how amazing he is on here, yet he still can't get ahead of the likes of Mangala and Sakho in the national team. What's that about? Something doesn't add up.

That's just the NT manager being set in his ways. France have several really good CBs to choose from and the likes of Mangala/Sakho are included more for team chemistry and morale than anything else.
 
Isn't Mendes the agent of Laporte? I think that could help us get him if we wanted him and Mourinho did want him last year.

It was Mendes but I think it is Puyol now.

One of the most overrated CB's in football today. Plus we'll get mugged off by Everton in signing him.
 
Surely no other club has spent what they have in the past 4 years on defenders? They still can't seem to get it right :lol:

I already explained, Varane and Koscielny are the starters and it's not going to change any time soon, after that Sakho is a good locker room player and has been solid with France which makes him an obvious pick, after that all the CBs are in the same boat Perrin, Zouma or Mangala. Now concerning Laporte, he is the U21 captain and he won't start for France so there is no point putting him on the bench when he can help his own class age and when a player is selected for the U21 he is also on the list for the Seniors.
 
This would be an ideal signing. I thought we may have signed him 2 years ago, but 2 more years added to his development in Bilbao, excellent defender.

If Shaw comes back to his full potential then I think CBJ will fill the left sided central defender role
