Aymeric Laporte | Txiki doesn't forgive (except for when he does)

We were gonna play him at LB anyway. We heard he's got crabs and Althetic don't even love him. We don't even care.

#relaxed

Got to laugh. Can just imagine the City PR people emailing the journalists to focus on the fact City are 'relaxed' about it but without actually using that word. Cue a number of lazy journalists too busy watching Italy and Belgium to give a shit and just repeating ad verbatim what City informed them.

Has Laporte ever played left back?

Good news for everyone other than City supporters...they'll go and sign Stones now as well just to make it even better

So does it mean they were in for him but since he turned them downed he was too expensive? Or that they were never in for him cause he was too expensive?
It's all BS as they briefed that they weren't willing to pay £40m for Laporte as he's too expensive for his age. Then surely paying £45m+ for Stones who's 1 day younger than Laporte, less experienced and less of a finished article won't happen?

Bet pep ain't relaxed that's for sure

It was absolutely bonkers to even be thinking about paying that much, the guys got a broken leg, he might not ever be the same again. Give it another year and if he's really that good then they will pay what it requires. Stupid to do it now really.

Weird choice from him, I can understand that he didn't want to go to City, but surely he realizes that he's basically stuck in Bilbao for the next 5 years, because nobody's gonna pay €70m for a defender, not even clubs that can pull money our of their asses, like City or PSG.

55m in pounds? We're not that far off it, really, feck, PSG paid 50 for Luiz.

They paid €50m, not pounds. I personally don't think anyone will go higher that that for a defender, but you never know.

Pretty sure it was £.

To go that high for a defender they'd basically have to be so marketable as to be a global brand in their own right. Pretty much limited to Sergio Ramos and Thiago Silva.

Or just snare a club run by lunatics a la Txiki and the imminent £50m Stones bid, PSG and David Luiz.

He's 22, he loves the club, what's the problem?

The likes of Götze would have done well to make a decision like Laporte.

Yeah, not exactly like Athletic Club are a no mark team. Still shudder at the manner they outclassed us a few years back.

Just checked wikipedia, you guys are right, it was pounds. My bad.
To be fair, your instincts were right in thinking no-one in their right minds would pay £50m for David Luiz. You just failed to account for insanity.

Just for comparison's sake, how much is Varane's release clause?

Also, IMO the move from Laporte doesn't make sense. Surely, Athletic wouldn't be his dream club. Everyone fancies a dream to RM, Barca, Bayern, maybe us. You can always reject a club you don't want to play for(City or any other club) but signing a release clause basically enslaves him to Athletic.
That's not true at all

Le Tissier stayed at Southampton despite the attraction from elsewhere. They are countless other players like that. Francesco Totti is another. Gabriel Batistuta was also loyal to Fiorentina. And its not a lack of ambition either.

Giggs, Scholes and Keane to name a few of our own too.

Everton are going to take them to the cleaners now. Will be funny to see how much be goes for.

So City didnt go in for him because he was too expensive for a young defender.... and they want Stone...
ok

apparantly offered 8 million a year contract at city but stayed for 5 million at athletic.

Le Tissier, Totti are from their youth academy and locals to the country and city respectively, Batistuta stayed because Fiorentina were doing well. But Laporte has no such reason. He won't be winning League or cups with Bilbao. He isn't in CL next season, and Bilbao are basically competing for that last CL spot.
I agree he may be ridiculously loyal, but in today's age, its never rewarded.
Imagine there to be a scenario where he has a fight with manager or falls down the pecking order. In situations such as these, he would want to leave and fast. A release clause of 70m will basically mean he'll not find suitors that easily. ANd sure, Bilbao can sell him for less than that, but when did it last happen! Herrera had to pay 5m from his pocket to join us and Laporte may well have to do something similar

He's probably been lined up for a move to Barcelona or Madrid over the next few years. Otherwise City would have been a great move for him.

I wouldn't expect too much sharing on Laporte's part, Basque PR is to tow the line - they'll spin it as committing longterm

"The family, my teammates, the fans and the club have helped me to make this decision. They wanted to keep me here and I am very happy here since I came to Bilbao. I have signed a new deal and I am very grateful to the club.

"There have been several clubs interested. They were very exciting and attractive projects but in the end you have to make a decision and I have made mine. I hope everything goes well. I thank the clubs that have been interested because it means that I was doing things right and so I have to keep like that at Athletic."

Nice to hear that.

Fiorentina were relegated but Batistuta stayed with them. Same with players like Buffon with Juventus.

Batistuta left for Roma in 2000 (and won the league)
Fiorentina were relegated in 2002 (though the extent of their financial woes started to become clear in 2001)

Fiorentina were relegated in 1992-93 season, Champions of Serie B in 1993-94.

Good move for Laporte. Gets a comfortable salary bump and the chance to further develop himself into one of the worlds leading CB's in an environment that works for him. When this contract expires he will be 26, in his prime and with his pick of clubs.
Actually nice to see a footballer making such a rational long term decision for once

Laporte has been at the club for 6 years and is also basque. Similar

FairPlay to him

Not many will turn down the money and Pep to stay at a club that's not even top 4 in their league

So embarrassing how City got their reporter try to save face over this. They want him as a Left Back and now....
