Aymeric Laporte | Signed new 5 year deal with Athletic

I'd have thought that the buy out clause would be much higher with a 5 yr contact, especially when it's Bilbao!

He may well be worth more than £34m in a year or two anyway!

Nope, if the De Gea thread has taught us anything it's that players who are about to leave have a moral obligation to hinder their own move for the sake of the club that will be pocketing millions off their back.

Even someone like Suarez signed a new contract to get his club more money. It really happens pretty often and it would be a shame if Dave doesn't do the same, which will most likely happen :(

Otamendi, Hummels and Miranda are the hot candidates obviously. The Laporte link cooled down months ago. Better if he stays 1-2 years and develops properly, we can still go for him then, even if it is a higher price.

Will be too late by then, Barcelona will go for him as soon as they can.

Maybe, but they seem to neglect their CB department for quite some time now. I dont know if he would have signed this window for us anyway.

They were sniffing around his signature last summer but Laporte (rightly) said he needed more first team experience. But Barcelona i'm sure will go for him in Summer 2016 and that will be 2 seasons more first team experience under Laportes belt.

They dont sign to give the club more money... Suarez knew Liverpool were NOT selling him. So by signing a new deal he at least gets a pay rise for staying the extra season, yes the club can also benefit here by removing/adding a release clause. Suarez signed as it was his only option, the other choice was to stay at Liverpool on less money (His previous contract).

Of course such a deal works in both directions. Player gets more money, team gets a higher fee when he is leaving. It would most likely be the same with De Gea too. If he is signing a new contract, he would still end up in Spain at some point in the future, but it would bring us in a better negotiaition position and DDG would also get a huge payrise of course.

So, with this new deal, is he now under Mendes? Or did that happen with the June2014 deal?

Yeah of course both can benefit, but when the player signs the deal it means hes staying, even if it is only another year (Ronaldo, Suarez etc). In DDG case, if he signs then he will stay for a year or more. If he doesn't then he will leave. So in this case Laporte is staying for at least another year now, hes not signing to give his club more money and leave in the same window.

Seems like he signed with Mendes some weeks ago :(

True. Wouldn't rule it out completely, but most likely it will mean he is staying for another season of course.

Let him rot there then.

A player expressing his loyalty for a non-competing team is now wrong of him.

We are quite good in that department for the time being. Pique, Mascherano, Mathieu, Bartra, and Vermaelen.

I wasn't too fussed about him anyway. I feel we need someone experienced. No point getting another young-ish center back unless we were getting rid of one of Jones/Smalling.

Laporte is a extremely promising CB and with Varanae are ones for the future, but to partner (presumably) Smalling in the CB and lead the backline requires a seasoned experienced CB in the mould of Godin, Hummels or Otamendi.

Hummels and Godin yes, but Otamendi is just older, not really that experienced to be honest. One season in La Liga, little bit more in Portugal, a few CL games and caps here and there. Smalling and Jones are more experienced on the big stage than him.

I may have added Otamendi to the list because I think he is the CB we are most likely to end up with :)

That's true. With Laporte signing a new contract too there is only Otamendi left, we haven't really tried to get Godin, but not really any rumours that he is on our list.

I would have actually preferred Godin to Hummels, but it seems like the chance of getting either is slim....which, as you have stated leaves Otamendi at the head of our list for CB's at the moment.
Both he and his agent have stated he wants to leave and Rojo favourited a tweet in which he was asked to tap up Otamendi so he is surely leaving and I think we are his preferred destination.

The more I see of him is the more I like him...I am warming to him the same way I did to Rojo, both look like they would lay their life on the line for the club.

Jones will be fine, and get better once he stops getting fecking injured every 3 weeks. Unlike Evans, he doesn't seem to be mentally fragile. I still feel he'll go on to be an excellent defender

He's too stupid not to be injured every three weeks

You think we are entitled to a player? What if he's enjoying his football and wants to develop further before making a big move?

Thundercnut of a post.
Yea i wasn't in my best mood when i wrote that, shouldn't have said it.

Nothing wrong with testing the waters. If you don't ask you don't get and all that.

At least nobody else can have him for a while. We can get him next year, or the year after. Or maybe Barce and Real will :(

what about a cheeky 15m bid? FFS Milan

Anyway, hope Woody can land him, although i am sceptical. They will hate us over there.
