The gauntlet of the PL awaits Axel, but the boy — — or should we call him a tank? — was full value for the accolades he received for an outstanding performance against some very big names away from home in the CL.

Maguire is likeable? He’s pretty dull as a character IMO.

but compared to Di Maria, Lukaku, Sanchez...

He’s likeable in terms of his attitude on the pitch. He clearly plays through minor niggles etc. Much better than the three horrendous characters we used to have.

We're getting a very good return on the 22-23 year old age group from the academy. Tuanzebe, Rashford, Henderson and McTominay is a very solid collection of players from one age group.
Yep! And it seems like there are few who are ready to step up soon. Greenwood, Williams need to focus and work on their game. Other than that, Mejbri, Mengi, Laird. The future is bright.
We are terrific at promoting talent from the academy.

Of all the Utd players last night he`s the one who positively surprised me the most. To put in a performance like that after being 10 months out against CL finalists and one of the very best front lines in world football is very impressive. Pace and agility is not enough to look good vs Neymar/Di Maria/Mbappe neither is just playing in a back 5. His reading of the game, decision making and ability on the ball was on point. I didn`t think he`d make it here as I admittedly never watched him enough at Villa nor was I confident he`d overcome his injury problems but performances like yesterday build confidence. Let`s hope the PSG game becomes a career springboard and his injury problems are behind him as at 22 he still has potential to be a top CB and a regular starter for us

I don’t worry much about that. We tend to get restless, but Solskjær has known about the potential of this player since probably before he arrived, and yesterday shows that even with a year and a half of injuries he was going to get a shot, and his development didn’t look as if it was harmed that much either.
I expect it will take him half a season before he regularily plays as good as he can, but if he gets a break from injuries now, I’m looking forward to seeing that.

Wouldn't be surprised if Maguire is fit he comes back in to partner Lindelof with Axel on the bench at the weekend.

Please stay fit, please stay fit, please stay fit.

Doing it once to Mbappe was impressive, but the second time, wow. He should pace and strength. Great return to the first team and it didnt look at all like he was panicking. Him calling it a run out was funny too.

Yeah, Tuanzebe looked great yesterday. He's further along than I thought. Would love to see him involved a lot more in the first team. Exciting times with him and Mengi coming through.

Secret to his performance? Agent Cavani

That's a big reason I wasn't pulling my hair out over Cavani on deadline day, his leadership off the pitch could really provide good value for the squad this year. He was always a pro in Paris even amongst some of the biggest ego's in the game

I think Ole will still be reluctant to throw him in at the deep end, and rightly so. He hasn't played in a year and yesterday I'm sure he was running on the adrenaline of being back and playing againts Mbappe and Neymar. We know how good he can be, but his injury record is already worrying for a young player, so his reintegration into the squad should be managed carefully. And that means not calling him for him to be a mainstay in the defence every time Maguire and/or Lindelof make a mistake.

Yeah, the annoying part was how we handled the window and left it all to deadline day (which is a mess to do), but in the end we did the right things for sure. Just could've been managed much better and prepared us for the season better, and probably saved us from those awful performances before the international break.

Cavani is a prime example tbf. Available since June, signed on deadline day in October, needs to quarantine for 2 weeks and then train for a few weeks to get to fitness which means he likely won't do much until after the November international break!

Yeah but had we signed him back when he became available it is likely that we would have needed to meet his initial demands which according to reports, lowered substantially the longer he remained a free agent. So waiting seemed to save paying him a crazy contract, good business by us. I think the same applies to Telles, we ended up paying 15m but had we signed him earlier it may have been 25m. Once porto were backed into a corner they had to take the 15m now or nothing in 9 months, good negotiation on our part. 10m saved on one transfer is lot of money for sake of a few weeks.

I like in his post-match presser that he said "ultimately we're the bigger team". This is the United mentality, not being in awe of PSG. Awesome performance by him. He needs to be starting games next to someone, be it Maguire or Lindelof. I know it's only one game but he should get a chance.

I don´t think we should judge the players based on the first few matches this season where the whole team looked totally out of form. Maguire was good against Newcastle and good also most of last season. Lindelöf had a very good game as well last night, and right now, we should perhaps not overplay Tuanzebe, but I would like to see him start again against Leipzig - if not against Chelsea this weekend.

I wouldn’t either. He’s been out since forever, it might be prudent to ease into the acion to avoid more injuries.

I bet the lad can hardly move today, it'll take him a few days/ice baths to recover.

It'll probably be Lindelof and Maguire in the League with Axel spelling one of those two in Europe till January then look at it again.

I'm not, I think Maguire is a top player, and Lindelof is better than most give him credit for.

Be ideal to have Axel on the bench as he can play anywhere and not look out of place. The kid is a pure footballer.

In reality, I’m hoping Tuanzebe can push himself into the team before that. Realistically, I would be happy just to see him not get injured the next six months.

Absolutely, and if Tuanzebe didn´t get injured last fall, I´m convinced he would already be a starting every game for us. I´ve always expressed great belief in Tuanzebe.

It’s not the defensive work he did that had me most excited, it’s the confidence in his passing and being on the ball. In a game that big, first time out in forever, he could have easily just played it safe. But he made some great forward passes that most of not all of our defenders struggle to do.

I think Mourinho said when he joined us, that only seeing Tuanzebe train for 10 minutes, he understood that he is one of the most talented players he has ever seen.
Unreal performance against 2 of the best attacking players in the world. Needs to stay fit.

While that was an outstanding performance yesterday from Axel, I still need to see more to be convinced he's the solution to our CB troubles. The good thing is if he can stay fit he has the whole season to fully prove himself and can save us £60m on a new CB.

Yesterday's game in a way was the ideal game for him, played up against pacey attackers and an attack that only plays the ball to feet. With that said its still Neymar and Mbappe so he deserves massive credit.

I'm not saying we can't get excited but I would be far more impressed if he could repeat that level of performance in the PL in a back 4 over a run of games. He certainly has the talent and presence to do it but I need to see it before I'm fully convinced. At one point, I thought Jones, Smalling and even Bailly would be one of the best CB's in the world due to their early performances and was let down by them although Smalling nearly got there. So I'm cautious with how I rate young CBs going forward.

Difference with Axel over those others is his confidence on the ball and with his passing. Also, if he does emerge and continue on with how he played yesterday all season, why not make him the player to partner with a new CB? I just don't see Maguire not being a potential liability with his lack of pace in big games with how important it is to be able to react quickly when playing a high line. He plays much more like a classic Mourinho CB who would be more comfortable defending balls into the box and cutting out passes, not someone who has to deal with a tricky winger that he's isolated on.

His pace is ridiculous, he is strong too, can bring the ball out of defense and pass the ball too. IMO his weakness is heading the ball, it looks like he has good leap but somehow he doesn't win many aerial duels.

Hopefully he will stay fit, can be our first choice CB.
