Awaiting Chelsea’s fire sale: who goes where?

I can’t be the only one that looks at that team and think their starting 11 was better before? Crazy given they spent over £600m to make the team.

Don't disagree with you; buying Lukaku to replace Werner put us into a death spiral and more or less forced us to play half the team out of position.

Only thing I'd say is it's not a team built to win now; the hope is that some of this lot gel and improve together over the next season or two to make a real fist of things as they enter their prime.

This is just the strangest team ever. It’s kind of like having “gone on holiday” for a year or two while playing Championship Manager and all of a sudden half the team are regen-names.

 it's painful how spot on this is

Loftus-Cheek off to Milan. Year left on his deal. Decent deal for Milan I think. He could flourish in that league if they use him correctly.

This fire sale has turned into fire for Chelsea. Unbelievable business when other top teams can barely get a bid for one of their players for sale. Sounds like Mount for £60M by the end of the week.

Really good deal for Milan. Italian clubs have been doing good with transfers in recent years. Not a lot of big money signings but they worked quite well.

I think it’s fortunate rather than great business. The Saudi league has really bailed Boelhy out of a self-made hole.

Selling a good homegrown squad player for 16 million Euros isn’t a great deal in this market, and it remains to be seen whether replacements will be better players than Havertz or Mount, the tandem that linked up for the biggest goal in your recent history.

Not being really negative for negative’s sake, I just think the jury is still out. The eleven still looks worse than when the club was sold. I think it’s a big month ahead for Chelsea.

It is not just the money made from sales. Our wage budget is being trimmed unbelievably. Most of the outgoing were on bigger wages than the incentive contracts the new owners are giving to new players.

Personally I think between Gallagher and Hall we should have enough cover for RLC's departure - also worth remembering that we don't have European football so our squad doesn't have to be as deep. Securing a reasonable fee for RLC rather than letting him go on a free is great business.

I think it's both. Saudi Arabia going on a spending spree around Europe is very lucky for us. He's 27 years old with a bad injury history with a year left on his 120K a week deal. Not sure how much more we could squeeze out of Milan for him. We could probably have gotten more if we were selling him to a PL team to be fair.

I agree. I hope he stays injury free because if he does, I actually think he has a shot at making the Euros.

I think that’s fair about his wages and it is potentially fair business when considering that, but Chelsea fans were all about him and how flexible he was last season. It seems like someone who could have gone to a midtable team for 40-50 million if his situation had been better managed.

It’s also true about not having Europe, but that should mean, in theory, that you want the starting 11 as strong as possible. A lot is going to depend on who comes in, but better midfielders and more reliable attacking options are an absolute must.

Oh I love the flexibility RLC brought to the table - he was in many ways the key performer in that second leg performance at the Bernabeu in 21/22 where we almost took out RM in that he could play as a RWB in defense but step into midfield in possession. Still though, at this point I don't think he'll ever be too much more than a squad player for a top top side - but would be delighted to be proved wrong by him in Milan.

I still can't believe we agreed to that idiotic friendly on a plastic pitch in the US before the EL final - if he'd never ruptured his Achilles I'm convinced your price estimation would be laughably low!

This fire sale reminds me more of going to a store liquidation and seeing everything is still 100% overpriced.

Cannot believe how well it's working for them. We will probably sell out excess for a third of the fee we paid. Their rejects seem to appreciate in value all while finishing 12th.

Mount out £60M

Now Loftus-Cheek has signed for Milan - £18M.

Chelsea are incredible in player sales.
Already shifted 8 senior players this window, and raised about £200M.
How long do you reckon it will take United to move Maguire, McTominay, Henderson, Telles, Bailly, Fred, Williams, Martial....???

They've moved quickly to sell or release those players, before the transfer deadline this evening.
Any deals completed by the cutoff, count under the 2022/23 season, for FFP.
After midnight, transfers for the rest of the window, fall under next season.

Are Utd, delaying selling anyone until after today for that reason?

.

Farewell good sir :(

They've done pretty well on getting a lot of money for outgoings but I'm not sure it's a wise strategy to offload some of your key players in Kovačić, Mount and Havertz to PL rivals. Some clubs wouldn't even allow that to happen. Of course the players have a big say in where they want and I guess they couldn't afford to make them run out their contracts, but as a Chelsea fan I wouldn't be thrilled at this.

Mount and RLC are the only one I’m sad to lose, and I’m annoyed at the club for not doing more to keep Mount. With RLC it kinda felt like the end of the road for him at Chelsea.

I can kind of see where you're coming from, but do you honestly think you won't miss Kovačić, or that he will not absolutely smash it at City?

Kova started racking up missed injury time the last two years. Sometimes you have to let a player with skills go when you need to provide cover for them all the time. City may not need him as often.

Kovacic will be great at City, but I was always wary of giving him a new 5 year deal. Of course I will miss him but I was okay with Chelsea not wanting to give him an extension.

Fair enough.

Net spend
  1. United: 1.07b
  2. City: 863m
  3. Arsenal: 739m
  4. Chelsea: 518m
  5. Liverpool: 370m
  6. Tottenham: 343m
People complain that the Glazers haven't spent enough!
The ones responsible for business have been shambolic - the recruitment, the sales, the scouts...

The two most important things are net spending (business side) and trophies (final outcome). If someone were to develop a simple model to express major trophies as a function of net spending, City (dodgy business apart) would blow everyone away.
f(major trophies) = beta0 + (beta1)*(net spending) + error

City’s net spend will be much larger than United. You only have to look at the Haaland transfer. It’s still reported he cost them £60m yet they paid his Dad double that on top of a salary of £850k per week. Factor all that into these calculations.

I’m still convinced the likes of De Bruyne must be on double salaries or have guaranteed jobs after their retirement like UAE ambassadors. You rarely see a City player wanting to leave over the last 10 years and they only way they could achieve that is paying these players far more than their reported salaries.

We may spend to equal arsenal s net spend in this window in my opinion. Caicedo, one more midfielder, one goal keeper, if possible one center forward.

But still some players certainly go away from us like ziyech, lukaku some might move like chalobah, cucurella, maatsen. We will still spend near 200 mn in this window.

Look like we bet huge on young squad and pochettino s ability to bring best out from youngsters. Other than Silva, sterling, kepa and nkunku just 25 our entire squad are 23 or below that age.
