Avatar - Welcome to the future of cinema!

Just saw it 3-D IMAX, what a piece of shit.

Sure it was visually stunning and that helped it a lot or I would have walked out. Not only was the stupid story predictable, it was low brow and distinctly American. First of all I saw one black person in entire movie... Second, the characters were all shit, Weaver was annoying as hell, "where's my cigarrette?" The natives were idiots and despite the film lasting nearly 3 hours really didnt introduce anything much about the culture and civilization I felt. Sure they spoon fed you moments, how many times did they say the same thing about that stupid tree, but any idiot could have done with it once. The security chief was a total douchebag idiot you see in any run of the mill American war or football movie, as either a drill instructor or football coach. The film disappointed and I wasn't expecting it to be that good going into sure it looked great but I expected that and payed for it. It wasn't captivating and it wasn't original, Cameron fecked up on this one he might make a fat wad of money on this but well I still think it is shit. After reading this last page, I was shocked that people from all over the world who laugh at the simpleton ways of the U.S. are enthralled with this film, because it is a shit film the 3D aside.

Well, not really! Hence why I don't particularly fancy it

But we'll see

You didn't love those two movies and you are male? Kinell.

Although Avatar does have a cameo by Costner.*

* he is one of the trees (but only in 2D)

I think that Brad meant that he didnt think Avatar was anything like those two movies, and I don't either. Both the others you previously mentioned were excellent, this one was dire, albeit visually stunning.

Too girly with the love story? Because the action scenes particularly towards the end of the film were great and the Earthlings as an analogy for the US and their foreign policy was quite apposite.

The action was decent enough and did look great. The similarities with the US were obvious from the very beginning, I just think it was a bit too simple to be considered a great movie by any standard. That is why I wouldn't consider it a great movie experience despite it being visually gorgeous, because I enjoyed Up In the Air last week far more, which answers your question about love stories etc. It wasnt as bad as I firsst thought having digested it for a few hours but it was extremely underwhelming imo

See th problem here is people are going to see this expecting some type of masterpiece of film. It's not, this film is more akin to the 50's scifi B movies then it is Citizen Kane. Just enjoy the spectacle.

I thought this was a very very very very average film. Felt very long and the effects whilst great, don't make up for the very poor storyline.

Went to see this last night and there was a power cut in the cinema. Avatar fail!

Will try again next week.

Seen it now and enjoyed what I saw thoroughly... only thing is, the cacking projector broke down right before the finale.

They were trying to save Sigourney

Have I missed a lot?
Is the end the best part?
Am I insanely unlucky?

Get your money and go back in - you've missed about forty minutes of the film if it broke down there

it was made to look simple and not have one original or clever line in the script on purpose
you have to consider this - the film is unbelievably expensive, so its story has to be as simple and straight forward as possible so that it appeals to a wider range of people. Everything else is a massive risk not worth to be taken.

To much over analysing going on for what is simply a stunning visual spectacle.

The only problem with Avatar imo is re-watchability once its not in cinemas anymore, I just cant imagine how poor it will look on a small 2D screen.

Itll be like going from a PS3 game to a PS2 game

Yeh, I've been wondering about this. I mean, I know that certain cinemas only are able to display the 3D technology because they need a dual-camera setup or somesuch, but I don't know how this will translate to BluRay.

But I cannot believe they'd only release the film in 2D. That would be commercial suicide, and I don't believe Cameron would put all that effort into the 3D if people could only appreciate it for the two months it's on release at the cinema. They must have considered how to make it 3D on a home HD system, and, frankly, so must everyone else. If 3D really is going to be the future of cinema (as the upcoming major releases - all in 3D - are suggesting) then it's going to have to work at home, too. People will not be happy customers if the films they saw in 3D at the cinema can't be translated onto their big old flat screens at home.

It will be a let down for sure, however with the quality of the blu-ray player and HD tvs, the 2D version will still look pretty slick. Just not at full potential.

however they must have weighed that and thought it would make a good chunk of coin at the boxoffice and then still do good enough on dvd.

But how do you know it won't work on 3D at home? I'm not entirely sure of the technology, but I know that cinemas use cameras and home systems don't. Just because cinemas need a specialist system installed to display 3D surely doesn't mean home HD systems will?

Where's Weaste when you need him? :(

So, these people are hunters and stuff right? like they're all hunters and warriors and shit aren't they?...

...So....what do they hunt exactly?

Other than that....I thought it was quite good. It's not supposed to be a cerebral masterpiece, it's a Sci Fi action movie. And for that, it was quite good. Bit over long though. But I quite liked it. It pissed all over LoTR like a weak bladdered race horse.

btw, I watched a downloaded CAM ver, and the action was still mind blowingly good, so I doubt there's much problem with those worrying non 3D audiences won't get it....

Well there's the scene where Neytiri is with Jake when he comes to the end of his "training", and he shoots that deer-thing using the bow and arrow and she praises him for a clean kill. They're basically giant blue native Americans in a weird jungle, so I suspect they hunt what they need to in order to support themselves without damaging Gaia... sorry, Eywa.

Also, a downloaded CAM version? :nono:

Normally I'd not be too keen on such a thing anyway, but in this case you've really, really missed out! Giant screen 3D with proper cinema sound system and you've got yourself the greatest cinematic experience since your girlfriend noshed you off in the back row when you took her to see Notting Hill.

You did see the animal Jake shot with an arrow when he was with Neytiri right? then afterwards he recites a prayer before stabbing the creature (in the heart?) and ending its life?

I presume thats what they hunt.

uh huh...clearly

but then she gets really angry and upset when the dog thing's killed when they first meet....So that makes no sense. They're peaceful spiritual people in tune with a large connecting symbiotic world, that just happen to take being a warrior and a hunter as the greatest achievement of the males?...eh?

Not a big thing admittedly, there aren't that many plot holes in it really, he's a good writer Cameron....There's certainly no "well the ghost people turn up and kill everyone and then the Eagles fly them home despite not helping them at any other time" type of rubbish. And people lapped up that shit so I don't see what the problem with this is particularly. I thought it was pretty epic in scope. A decent popcorn movie. Not as good as T2 though

Incidentally, what else has that music been used in? The 4 note brass riff bit has definitely been used in something else.

Edit...Don't worry just found out, Enemy at The Gates...James Horner recycling there, but to good effect

She gets angry about killing the dog things because they die for no reason (not because they need to eat them) and its not a clean kill I guess like the deer thing later.

Ok then...I must have gone to bog in that scene. Still, the heir to the tribal chief doesn't seem like a peacefull, spiritual being at all....But pffft

Seems like a few others have noticed James Horners recycling too...It's not just Enemy at the Gates either

Did anyone else think when Neyteri was saving Jake Sully, Snoo Snoo!?

uh huh...clearly

Well, like the Native Americans, they kill only when they need to. They're warriors and hunters because they can tame and kill anything in the forest, and they do - when they need to for food.

The reason Neytiri freaks out when she saves Jake is because she doesn't need to kill those weird dog things. The whole thing could have been avoided if Jake weren't "ignorant, stupid like a baby", and that makes her sad.

Also, we have no idea if - again like the Native Americans - they war with each other. Perhaps that's where the warrior aspect comes from, not to mention for the past decade they've been sharing their world with megalomaniacal aliens who insist on destroying everything about it - that's bound to raise some warlike tendancies in the younger generation!

Taking my girlfriend to this on thursday. Dragging more like.

Its made nearly $650 million so far worldwide, which is awesome.

No I didn't. Fantasy sci-fi action just leaves me a little cold

Wasn't that keen on Star Wars, didn't bother to watch any of the LOTR's

I didn't mind the original Star Trek series, and I used to watch a bit of Lost in Space in my youth

feck me, people will always complain, It's just a movie, everything must not be perfect, if you can't sit down and enjoy a movie without scrutinizing it in detail for every scen then go be a movie critic.

Maybe one of you can end a debate between me and the missus: was there or was there not at least one shot where we saw side nipple from the main blue woman?

There were at least three side boobs shots, nipple included, Peter Griffin would have been happy
