Australian Open 2014

To wum the Federer fans heh heh heh.

Nadal might OFFICIALLY become the best ever. Federer fans can cobsole themselves saying he was the best to watch lol
There's never an "official" best ever in pretty much any sport.

Wait, I just realized your Kevin, the professor level poster

Missed this. Was pretty sure it would go to Rafa in straight sets.

Pleased Andy got to the quarters in the end, he'd have had no chance against Rafa if half-baked.

Not surprised at all by the result. Rafa's got Federer's number. Amongst the 'top' players Federer is the easiest matchup for Rafa. Wawrinka on Sunday might be a little more tricky.

If Nadal wins, he'll become only the second man since Laver to win all 4 slams atleast twice. Immense player.

Sadly, wawrinka is worse v rafa than the fed is. Wawrinka hasn't even won a set off nadal. If nadal pitches and doesn't get injured on sunday then nadal will have 14. Only 3 more to go till.

If Rafa stays fit I think this is the first time where a calendar year grand slam can become a real possibility. He'll most likely win RG. The only real hiccup would be wimbledon but let's not forget he's been to 5 finals there and won 2 of them. If gets past the first week then its all systems go. We could witness something special this year.

nah, won't happen. That's what everyone said when Rafa won the Australian Open for the first time. He then went on to lose at RG. Winning all 4 is almost impossible right now imo

Don't think he was as good then as he is now. His backhand has become a real force. Vs roger his forehand only really came to the party in the 2nd set, his backhand was enough to keep Roger in check. Mind you he hadn't won a us open at that time so it was really wishful thinking. He wasn't dominant on hard court tournaments as he is now.

The difference really is Rafa now knows how to win all the tournaments on all surfaces. He's a heavy fav at RG. At the US only Djoko can stop him and he's beaten him twice before on that court. At wimby he only has problems in the first week. DJoko's game is also going backwards and with murray this means that Djoko might have to go through Murray to get to finals. Roger is his turkey and murray rarely has success against him too.

We haven't IMO in recent years had a player who had a better chance. The others had rafa to deal with on clay which made the task basically impossible. He has djokovic who he's beaten in his past 3 grand slam games against.

When did they last play?
Last year at the world tour finals in london. It was 7-6, 7-6 on rafa's worst surface(indoor hardcourt)
Last time they payed on a outdoor hardcourt it was 7-6, 6-1 which was also at the end of last year. Sadly for Wawrinka he also uses a one handed backhand so nadal uses basically the same tactics against him as he does vs roger, youzhny, gasquet, robredo etc. Tear down the backhand, thus opening up the inside out forehand.

Well it's looking bad for Wawrinka then. That's quite a shocking record heading into the final and when you take into account any nerves he might have, we might get another 3 setter.

Nadal's high loopy topsin forehand to Wawrinka's one hander won't work as well as against Federer because unlike Federer's it's a lot more reliable and not prone to breaking down, it's also waaay more explosive, plus Wawrinka probably has one of the best backhands down the line, which is useful when he's pushed Nadal out wide with his forehand. It'd be easy to look at his record at think it'd be easy for Nadal, but Wawrinka has been improving a lot. We'll see.

Fantastic start from Wawrinka but Nadal looks completely out of rhythm so far.

Wawrinka playing great. Always reminds me of Stannis Baratheon from Song of Ice and Fire.

Looks like his body has told him to retire.....he's nearly crying.

I hope he doesn't force himself through it out of being Rafa Nadal, the warrior. Back problems just don't go away if he goes too far here.

That's a bit of a shitty way for Warwinka to win the A. Open. But nothing he can do about it, really.

Federer is a vrry lucky boy. Nadal has missed Grand Slams and ia sometimes not fit whilst playing in them... if he wasn't so often injured, he would have been alot closer to Federer's Grand Slam record now.

What a let off, Federer partying even though Nadal has destroyed him at will pretty much every time.

Even Sampras said he had never seen anything like Nadal and found him to be i credible after watching him live for the first time last friday... he was already talking him up for 18 slams or so... how unlucky and lucky for the fake greatest player ever swiss boy.

Bets unsuspended and amazingly enough can get Wawrinka at 1/2.

I'm sure he would prefer to beat a fully fit Nadal. You could argue that he deserved this by beating a fully fit Djokovic in the semi.

Absolutely.

Well, looks like it's not over that quick, Nadal picking up all of a sudden.

Part of the reason Nadal is so injury prone is because of the way he plays. He puts so much pressure on himself physically that it's no surprise he breaks down. He may be enthralling, exhilirating and scintillating but he doesn't play as fluent a brand of tennis as Federer and means it's harder to keep doing it.

What is exactly happening here? Nadal is serving 50% and is still leading the set.

It's quite clearly heard beating a broken man. Even Bane refused to kill off Batman -_-

Yeah federer can hold the cup for the most lovely tennis player ever. The best tennis is played by the big boy Nadal.

How anyone can look at a player who has had one single opponent and who is his direct rival dominate him as badly as that (at 20 years of age he already took a Federer in his prime to 5 sets on his most favorable surface at Wimbledon! A year later he simply destroyed him there) and still call him the greatest ever... lolzies.

Nadal lost first set fair, lost second set because his back started hurting, had some treatment before the third set and is now playing well, Warwinka lost the momentum. Etc.

I actually do prefer Nadal to Federer and do consider him a better player. My point is that it isn't some fluke that Federer's avoided injuries while Nadal gets them, it's the way Nadal plays. It's often fantastic and incredible to watch but it does also cause him problems. Wait, why am I even arguing with an eejit like you?

Rafa, clearly fecked, has just won the third set
