I haven't watched him at all, so I will post what picture the stats are painting for him. I do love my stats, me. I'll compare him with other CMs/DMs we're linked with and add Fred and Kante for reference. Take these with a pinch because stats rarely paint the full picture.
Defence & Pressing: A beast. High number of successful tackles per game, high tackle win ratio, okayish "dribbled past" for someone who attempts so many tackles, very high number of successful pressures, top interceptor. The best ball winner next to Kante. Low on blocks which might mean he's often higher up the pitch pressing and not recovering too well to make last-ditch blocks like Kante or Fred.
Possession: Not the most involved in the build up, only Bissouma and Rice have less touches per 90. Very high successful dribbles ratio, shows a man who's got good control in tight spaces and is difficult to dispossess. He doesn't carry the ball too much so these dribbles are unlikely to be him taking players on. He doesn't receive too many passes so probably still a bit rough in positioning to make himself available for a pass and to get involved in the playmaking more.
Passing: Again on the low side compared to Fred, Kante and Neves. Both in total passes, success % and total progressive distance. His long passes rate is 68% which is the lowest of all, suggesting weakness in playing the quarterback role. Neves is the one with highest number of long passes and highest progressive distance. Still more involved than Bissouma and and Rice in the build up and with a surprisingly high number of assists.
Overall, he seems pretty well rounded for a 21yo. Better option than Rice or Bissouma going off these stats. But he's more a ball winner than he is a passer and would better be paired with a playmaker next to him. Playmaking wise, Neves is hard to beat it seems like they would make a good pair.

He has been watched by United scouts since he was at Bordeaux according to Julien Laurens (ESPN, Le Parisien). But it was Monaco who signed him (£16m) because it was reported the player felt it was the logical next step in his devolpment to move to Monaco.

I think, after signing a few players where they felt the players lacked the right mentality, they started using their network more to get to know the players we signed.
I think that is where Giggs came in this case and the media made a big deal about it.
That I don't doubt because we have the largest scouting network in the world since 2017 and I'm sure there's extensive reports on many players in the lower leagues we'll never sign. But it was said, that Giggs's reccomrndatiom was key in persuading Ole to sign the player.

I’m not sure what «key» means. Does it imply that Giggs told us to sign him and we did? Or that we would not have signed him if Giggs told us he lacked determination and the right attitude? To me, that is not the same.
Giggs have said that OGS reached out to him and asked him about James before signing him. To me, that seems sensible.

Giggs on the Webby and O'Neill YouTube channel said it was a no brainer signing. So he basically sold the idea to Ole who then proceeded to sign him. In normal circumstances Marcel Bout would've made the final call on Daniel James but in this case it was Giggs.

You make a lot of great posts in here. But I’m quite surprised about how you sometimes make assumptions and create a narrative. I get you are frustrated with OGS, I am too, but there is so much to focus on that I really dont see the need to create a story based on weak assumptions.

I'm the opposite when it comes to stats as they don't have enough context, but from the bit I've seen of Tchouameni he's decent enough passing but would need a playmaking #8 with him, but the same goes for Caf favourite Rice and also Ndidi.

When I say 'under normal circumstances' what I mean is that our club for a long time has operated by giving most of the control on the football side to the manager. And in contrast to most other clubs on the continent those clubs on the football side are controlled by people who make decisions independently from the head coach.
Things are starting to change though and I'll be honest you, I do prefer the head coach/DoF way of doing things.

his athleticism alone would be a really great asset in the premier league. he has really good size and really good pace to him.

Badiashile wasn’t keen on the move, as he liked his situation at Monaco. It was not just a matter of them being reluctant to sell.
The only way Sangare and passing or dribbling go in one sentence is if the word "shit" is in there. One of the worst midfielders on the ball to ever play for PSV. The amount of time he passes the ball to the opposition while not being under any sort of pressure is stunning. He's great defensively.
You're a good man. I don't blame Ole also, to prefer low risk players. The squad improvement since he took over is there to see.

Is he a DM or is he a number 8?
he's got the athleticism to play like a number 8 box to box but likes to tackle.....only question really is he good enough technically to play DM?

Him & Pogba played well in a midfield 2, really impressive performance by him against a high pressing, low block team.
His passing in particular was really good & he was comfortable on the ball even under pressure.

It’s interesting that he’s overtaken Camavinga for now in the national team. I didn’t see the match today though
Camavinga hasn't played at all this season, Deschamps has access to the most inform players in priority, if the rest are available and of the right age, they go with the U21
I liked what I saw from him. He wasn't very adventurous with his passing in general (he left that to Pogba), but he seemed fairly press resistant and could always find a teammate or speed away from trouble.
He made a lot of interceptions I felt and threw himself around. Put a beautiful cross on the feet of Benzema, who did brilliantly to control it and find Diaby who hit the post. That was his highlight probably. Good game overall.
I'd prefer him to Rice that's for sure, although I still would prioritise a DLP ahead of him any other DM. Especially if Pogba leaves next summer, because Tchouameni can't replace what Pogba brings.

I'd say if Pogba leaves we need two CMs. I'd buy 2 now but if Pogba left we wouldn't have an option.
I don't know how you plan to do that considering Cavani is leaving and the target to replace him is Haaland.
In fairness we just bought Ronaldo so look ok at CF with the options we have for the next couple of years. I think we'll probably be in for Haaland but it wouldn't blow my mind if we didn't try too hard for him. I definitely think that a DM/CM is a bigger priority at the mo.
Tchouameni-Pogba works better than Fred-Pogba from the looks of it.
Not a very high paced competitive game, played at entirely different pace to premier league, so a poor comparison. Really need to see them together in a genuine top class game. But I do think Pogba is gone next summer, so we won’t be looking for a partner for him. He’s sitting out his contract and off to Madrid in my opinion. I genuinely rate Tchouameni but I see him as part of the next United midfield, taking over from Matic when he also leaves next summer.
We have the very realistic prospect of:
- Pogba and Lingard leaving on a free (though the latter is already surplus)
- Matic deteriorating further and (like Mata this year) being limited to only few cup appearances and being an option of last resort in his final year
- VdB failing to get enough games this season and pushing for a transfer next summer.
Hmm France - Ukraine is a bit of a mismatch in quality and not great evidence to make sound judgements on. The game ended as a draw too.
By analogy, on the basis of last season's Europa League final and our domination of the midfield there, you could argue that McTominay-Pogba work as well as Tchouameni-Pogba if not better. I'm not saying that's the case, I'm merely using it as an example to showcase how last nights game isn't enough evidence to go on.
There was Rabiot too. Whenever a French midfield is talked about the 3rd midfielder is always ignored. This is what gives the French midfield balance. It would be the same as playing Fred lm and the Pogba and mctominay as the double pivot. Fred tucks inn and gives the midfield more balance. We would have to sacrifice one of the wings to make it work.
