Asier Illarramendi

They'll get the 6.8m IVA (VAT) back, but yes, it's a lot of money for him. Looks like clubs have taken note of Real Madrid's desperation to buy Spanish players. Real Sociedad really didn't want (or need) to sell and with the CL a possibility the only way they would have sold him cheaper was if he was loaned back to them.

£28M + about 4.5m (pre tax) per year or thereabouts.

Rather expensive? He cost more than Götze did.

Similar price and again a release clause release, but presumably Gotze's agents had insisted on relatively low release clause in anticipation of Bayern moving for him.

Whereas Illara's clause was probably set high so people wouldn't use it. Ahem.

Only because of the stupidity of Dortmund. €37m was a joke for a player like him.

I'm also surprised that people are still surprised about these prices in today's market.

By now it should be clear that in order to get a top midfielder or striker you need to splash out a lot of cash, especially if the selling club doesn't need to sell the player.

I really agree, No logo. I'd be happy if we paid it for him, or any other midfielder.

They paid his buy out clause. That's how it's done.

is a Spanish international.

Was barely an international when Bayern paid €40m last year, still is really. He played a total of around 40 minutes at internatonal tournaments.

He was an international, Illarramendi isn't.

Illarramendi isn't even close to being one right now, I should think. He is worth about half the price Real paid for him

I don't think he's worth more than €20m either but not being called up by Spain when you're a midfielder is hardly the reason.

Unbelievable fee for this player.

On the plus side Madrid might be okay with their midfielders now and not try to sign Kondogbia

I would've liked us to sign Illarramendi but this is still a pretty exorbitant figure in my opinion. He is a very good talent that may turn out special rather than a special talent who looks destined for greatness. With Thiago, Hazard, Goetze etc the great potential in them is clear, and I can just about get my head around the money that was thrown at their respective clubs.

Not that I see Illarramendia as a risk, mind you - he's a safe, good all round player. It's just I don't think it's obvious that he'll turn into a star at this point. For that sort of money, you'd expect great things of a player.

This is a ridiculous fee.. Up there with Andy Carrol... how some can justify it is beyond me.

Casillas, Carvajal, Ramos, Isco and now Illarramendi - building a nice Spanish core Real.

Yep that's the new post-Galactico strategy 'YEA' - young quality additions/Espagnol core/academy players.

Isn't Carvajal originating from their academy as well?

Yes, one year in Bayer Leverkusen, where he became a regular. Returned under a buyback clause for 6.5m (Bayer paid 5m for him)

They need more players who are Spanish, in that position there is every chance he could hold that position for upto 10 years - 4 million euros per season isn't that bad for such an important position.

Let's be honest, who else could they have got? Not only is the market crazy at the moment in general, there is a lack of quality midfielders available, so it's even more difficult to get one of those.

I'd like to hear more about him though.. I saw all of Spain's games at the U21 and he was incredibly impressive for them. He had a 95% pass completion rate, but apparently only an 80% for Real Sociedad last season.. Is that simply because his role isn't to keep ball at Sociedad coupled that the teams tactics and other players generally aren't so good at keeping possession?

Judging by the U21 tournament only, I think they've got an alright deal considering he's Spanish and young - a ready made replacement for Alonso. I'd like to know how well he stood out in La Liga though - the commentators kept mentioning he had had a good season, but I usually take those statements with a pinch of salt.

Who cares about the fee, if we'd paid that for him I wouldn't give a shit, just get the business done and get down to pre-season. Real identified a position they needed to strengthen and simply made sure they got the player they wanted to strengthen it with no fecking about, sometimes you just have to do what is needed and look at the long term.

Who knows what they're actually paying for him? Good player who fits the YEA template.

That's the fee they paid for Alonso so I think people are overplaying this just a tad. The £30m mark is no longer a marker of outstanding talent/superstar status.

Fair enough. I meant that above more in the context of United signing him, but it's certainly true that £30m has become more of a regularity than it used to be. You need only look at the Witsel and Rodriguez transfers to really see how the market has taken off, although I think Zenit, Madrid, etc reside in the realm of the ridiculous at times anyway. These sort of teams continuously stretch what is considered acceptable in terms of transfers, where as I would certainly be questioning the logic of us paying that much for a player like Illarramendi.

Perhaps it has gotten to the point now whereby any sort of relative consideration like this is irrelevant; most top teams are splashing out what we would consider to be exorbitant fees anyway, with this exorbitance becoming more of a norm than anything.

How many times have you seen him play?

Come off it lad. He is not worth that. Don't care if i have to see him dozen times. Those are the fees you pay for a young Wayne Rooney or Neymar. Not this kid.

Yep, fantastic young player, Madrid will always have to pay more for players like we do. Isco and Illarramendi are great signings.
Indeed (although I've seen him play this summer in the Euros.) If we paid 60-odd million to land the likes of Illarramendi and Isco, I'd be pretty excited. Not sure why anybody would be bothered by the fee.
