Nothing to do with the point I was making, which is providing width doesn't mean player shouldn't cut in.

Also not sure how you came up with Winger is supposed to cut in and FB should be hugging line.

Because this is what supposed to happen. The winger and fullback shouldn't be occupying or getting into each other space, it gets crowded, easy to defend against and leaves the flank open without any support. If the winger cuts in on his stronger foot, the fullback should overlap him in the open space to create chances for crosses. Basic football.

Well then you can negate that by playing left footed left winger. I was curious to know how you came up with very definite way of playing for FB and Winger.

In any case, this wasn't the point I was making.

I don't remember seeing a right footed left back or a left footed right back that needs to cut in on every ball in my life to suggest any different thing but Ok. My point is what Young provides is hardly width.

Irwin played as LB almost all his career for us.

Here I thought Young was one of England's better players yet is getting slated on here. Created chances from his crossing and was solid in defence.

Seems that the only issue with him is not his actual output, but that he doesn't look good doing what he does.

Multiple managers are picking Young over supposed superior players, maybe they know more than a random on a forum.

My first post

My point is Young lacks any sense of unpredictability in his play to be said he's providing width. Whenever he receives a through or a pass to stretch the play on the left side the defender fully knows that he's going back every time because of his weak foot, thus kills the momentum of the attack and makes him easy to defend against as he does this every attack. Top wingers don't do the same trick over and over during the match. If you label this "providing width" then we have different definitions for this then.

Well again that's a different argument. My point was in reply to the post saying players who cut in can't provide width. Quality of width and player is obviously up for debate.

Young is unpredictable, as in sometimes he is shit and sometimes he is very good attacker for a left back. We can easily upgrade though, saying that if given choice I would sign RB first than LB.

I think Young has always been a predictable player throughout his career which what made him a good player only not a top one, he has a certain shot, certain take on and certain cross that has been doing in same way almost all his career but that's a different argument.

I'm happy with him as a squad player, as long as he's not a main starter.

Not a massive fan of his but there was a moment in yesterdays game where Lingard got hit and Ashley ran straight towards him to see if he was OK - one thing that's so admirable about this guy is his leadership qualities. He probably should have been our captain this past season.

Young has had a renaissance late in his career for which he must be credited, he had become a persona non grata during the Moyes, LVG and latter Ferguson years who the fans wanted out at any cost and he has now become a part of the team 'leadership' of sorts who just 'gets' the club and it even shows on the pitch. Both our ex wingers turned Fbs are quite one footed and predictable in how they attack but Young is still capable of using his left foot unlike Valencia and that does keep the defender guessing at times. After Lukaku he is probably the best crosser at the club.

Your comment got me thinking so i googled it. Young only played for two years under fergie. His appearances have been up and down for us and while hes never been a nailed on starter hes always gotten a decent number of games a season. Last season being the most - 38 in all comps.

Not surprised. His mentality is top-notch and he's been very good this tournament. Good on Southgate to go against the mainstream and trust him.

His balls into the box were excellent on the whole today. Defended well when needed to as well

In an attacking sense he's been better for England in these few games than all season for us

He plays some very good corners. I don't know why the hell we were giving Rashford corners ahead of him.

No more a birdshit man, He's now England's best crosser.

What a turn around.

He's not bad, just a poor fit with us because no matter who we play at left wing (Alexis, Martial, Rashford) they all prefer to cut in and take up the same space as Young.

They're cutting in with England too though?
I honestly think the appreciation of our players comes from not watching City smash 5 against a side 24 hours later.
There's no nonsense about not keeping 90 percent possession and pushing on after taking the lead just because Liverpool / City won as well

He is a good player, has always been a useful squad option for Utd, but an easy target or option when excuses for Mourinho were needed.

It causes problems when you have two inverted players on the same wing. I don't think anyone here doesn't appreciate him.
It would just help our attack improve a lot, having a left footer giving genuine width.

Quietly going about his business and today actually has something to show for it. Great cross and a good outlet on the left. Said in the match day thread that his presence on the left means Trippier isn't as overworked as he would've been with a less adventurous wing-back partner. Helps the tactics, too as it's not too one-dimensional.

His mentality shows and it must be great for him at his age, mainly being forgotten throughout his younger years. Worked hard for the call-up and Southgate was fair. Fair play.

The moment ball gets to him on throw line, you already know what he will do with it, 2 midfielders in middle free to pass to, nope, doesnt matter.

Great World Cup, delivery already amounted to goals. Tripper getting the headlines but Ashley has done equally well. Also big personality in the dressing room...

He was very good for us in the first half of the season. People tend to forget that.

It was only after that suspension in the middle of the season where he fell away. He just never seemed to really get going again after that (barring the odd good match here and there like against Liverpool).

If we could know that he would show that early kind of form all season again I'd be happy for him to remain first choice. The problem is that at his age we may end up seeing more and more of the struggles that he was having in the second half of last season.

Young is very underrated. He’s seen similarly to Valencia as a goalscoring attacking winger which he used to be but he managed to adapt defensively remarkably well to a new position being very intelligent player. He will hardly take on players being defender having responsibilities, the last man and so on. The delivery is till good. People overrate delivery of some fullbacks young showed he can pic a cross on fellaini or other players.. give him some credit

Put him on our set pieces next season (seeing as he'll obviously still be our LB) as he's clearly quite good at them

Young is miles better than Valencia in my opinion. He is both a superior crosser, dribbler and runner off the ball. Kept saying last season that I wouldn’t mind seeing him have a run at RB with Shaw at LB, but it didn’t happen.

The problem at United is that we are in a position where Young is our best wide player full stop and even he is right footed and playing on the left. I’m comfortable going into the season with Young playing a big role, but we need wide options and we still are not getting any.
