To England fans, has he staked a big claim to be starting left back for the World Cup? Who's he up against in the position?

Young is pretty much the number 1 English left-back at the moment. Betrand isn't having a great season at Southampton, and Danny Rose and Luke Shaw are barely playing.

Fabian Delph? MCity's main LB right?
*I don't follow them that much, so I'm not certain.

But yes, I could see Young make it into the National team, contesting with Delph, since usually per squad brings just 2 LB out of 23 squad players.

Delph is made to look good as he doesn’t actually have to defend much, rarely does he get isolated or left 1v1. They win the ball so high up the pitch he’s practically a midfielder.

He won’t get that protection in an england shirt. Its Rose/Bertrand/Young the favourites.

No Salah haha, well played Young, that was a very good performance from him.

Played well but likewise with RB, I really hope Jose sorts this position over the summer.

I don't understand how we can have two converted wingers as full backs and both of them can be so useless at doing anything remotely attacking.

In my excitement I rated him a 10 on Saturday. Only 10 I've ever given. It was probably more like a 9 but feck it.

Anyway, he got a 3 tonight. Brilliant.

This is why I didn’t get carried away with his performance on Saturday.

One good game does NOT make him a good player or someone we should persist with.

His interview after where he said everybody was fantastic and they all gave their all made me laugh...

For every great game he has, the next game he will remind us that not only is he not a left back, but he was never a top player to begin with.

Need to get those full backs sorted.

Or maybe close to 33-year old LB cannot play two great games/four days in this system with constant tracking??

I really respect how the guy went from being a bit of a joke to a useful player when he seemed certain to be out the door but he cannot continue at left back next season. He's still able to beat a man and cross when in the final third but when pressed deeper all he can do is hoof the ball forward. There's no playing out from the back with him.

I agree, we need two new fullbacks in the summer for both left and right. We need to stop persisting with people who can do a job and start bringing in some specialists.

I agree, it's the biggest problem with our attacking play at the moment, Valencia and Young are both very prone to putting their foot on the ball in their own half and passing sideways.

Sorting these two positions would improve us immensely.

After watching the Watford game. What a master class by our Ash on Salah, made him look very ordinary. Watford defence shat their pants today every time Salah got near the ball.

Doesn't get enough credit for his attacking game imo. We should perhaps consider moving him to the right and sticking Shaw at LB?

I personally think Shaw, if played regularly, has the potential to be more useful going forward than the current Valencia.
He's simply not as good as Valencia now. I'm a big fan of Shaw, but he's not as good as Valencia, not even close.

Signed a contract extension for next season.

Well deserved imo - not an ideal choice at LB, but as this appears to be a position we're almost more than certain to invest in over the summer, he's a decent cover.

A little bit surprised by this decision.

As I alluded to earlier, he's fairly decent defensively and has been genuinely dangerous in the final third this season. You'd think given those two things that he'd be a good full back but when we need to keep the ball and build from the back, he plays too many many shit passes and hoofs the ball up field too much. Even his hoofs are often shit because he's forced to clear with his weaker left foot.

His deficiencies in this area are probably less obvious when he plays at right back, but he is much better at in-swinging crosses from the left than he is at crossing from the right. Weird player, tbh.

I'd rather just buy a new LB and have Shaw deputise to them/try to win his place back. As it is, Mourinho seems to hate Shaw's guts so if he's off then we could definitely do worse than Young as a second choice left back I guess.

dominating the flank for England v Italy*

*things I thought I would never say

Well done Ashley - showing great confidence

He's been very good in the first half. Playing in a wing back role so obviously been very attacking.

Young and Trippier are guaranteed to have good deliveries in the box. I feel like these two should be are our starting full backs.

Especially when Kane's back.
