Ashes I - 2013 - In England

Good effort from Watson & Rogers, tough conditions for the batsmen but they've done ok.

Wonder who the oldest maiden centurion in test cricket is. Rogers' heart must be going a mile a minute.

Watson is probably the worst player to have at the other end when you're in your 90s and need some advise.

Well played Rogers, battling effort from him.

Muted celebration.

So why exactly have Australia not selected him till now? He's got like 20k first class runs.

Second test in a row we have been outplayed. Would genuinely be looking at a final match decider here if it weren't for the rain. We need to bowl Australia out for <350 and put some fecking runs on the board in our second innings.

Interesting segment from Warne and company. Wonder how many more wickets Warne would have had if he had a competent googly

That segment with Warne was amazing.

I think Nasser had it spot on with regards to comparison with Murali and Warne. Murali was more naturally gifted but Warne has a brilliant cricketing brain.

I am not sure Nasser came to that conclusion.

You don't get as many wickets as Murali has without having a good cricketing brain. I prefer Warne myself (I prefer leggies) but Murali was the better bowler I reckon

Or Murali just couldn't articulate himself well when talking to Nasser.

Murali was more of a naturally gifted spinner IMO, but Warne was more intelligent IMO.

● Alastair Cook has scored two half-centuries this series - only the second time in England's last nine series that he has passed 50 on more than one occasion (the other being his three-century tour of India late last year). However, those two innings have been modest - 50 and 62. He had converted his previous six half-centuries into hundreds, and, since March 2010, had scored at least 79 on 20 of the 22 occasions when he had reached 50 (including 15 hundred-plus scores). In those 22 innings, he went on to score, on average, 145. Over the same period, all other opening batsmen in Tests, in innings when they reached 50, went to score, on average, 91.

wow.

Red tape.

Brilliant innings, take a bow Rogers. Watson played well as well. This match is well balanced at this stage. Broad bowledsgnificently and was rewarded. Our seam attack in paper one would argue is better so it will be very interesting on the second innings. A lead of 150-200 will be brilliant. As close to that as we can and there will be some genuine pressure on England with their backs to the wall. Th weather saved them once.. Lets see what happens again.

The Aus seam attack is better, both on paper and on form right now. If there is a lead of 150+, then the match is won by Australia. The match is going to be too low scoring for the weather to have a major impact as it did in Old Trafford.

Yeah I don't have a clue what that bullet-point was trying to tell me.
In the last 9 test series, only in 2 of those has Cook made more than one fifty in a series. This includes the present Ashes.

I was pretty surprised by that -- considering he's thought of as a run machine.

England have been poor all series. Too many players have been under-performing. I think the momentum is with the Ozzies and I think they'll draw the series.

The pessimism and under-rating of England in this thread bemuses me more day by day.

Two softies for Swann. Great innings from Rogers. Quicker we can lead and get back out there with the ball the better imo.

How are either of those soft?

You're like a tabloid newsfeed.

First one was playing back and getting LBers, soft as feck.
Second given not out and the minutest little touch picked up to reverse it.

Those two dismissals could market bubblewrap they were so soft.

Can't be arsed pointing out how little sense that makes Ghaliboy.

Carry on fella.

Shrugs.

Broad with this new ball will be an indicator of how much life is left in this pitch after yesterday. If I was Clarke I would be glued to this.

I think I was wrong criticising Broad for not walking a while ago. Hardly anyone walks and you can't make exceptions for more blatant edges. A nick is a nick.

A thick edge is a lot different to hitting your foot and the ball shaving the glove hitting elbow and then pad. You'd not really have a clue on that one. Like when Warner slapped the feck out of his pad and didn't know he had nicked it.

The Broad one just past the realm of 'Gilly' on the scale of Gilly - Suarez though.

So your off spinner just took out two set batsmen in two overs and then in the next over Cook takes the new ball. Bizarre.

Set? Lol. Rogers looked good this morning.

Like I just said this will just be a 'here Australia lets see a preview of what you guys are going to do with the new ball'. So yeah a bit bizarre.

Ando finally gets one! I don't think he bowled as badly as his figures suggested and Vaughn saying he struggled I thought was tosh.

Great snare from Cook as well.

The catching in general in this series from both teams has been of a very high standard.
