Ashes I - 2013 - In England

Fantastic innings by Bell, could well have saved the match for us.

Been really impressed with Strauss' commentary even if his voice grates a bit.

Whoever decided that those wine adverts were a good idea needs fecking shooting.

Shit Watto saw those first two balls well. Lovely shots. Then that patented front foot plant and slay through the line.

If I was Clarke I'd have said to the lads 'you owe it to yourselves to bat time, if you personally have gotten yourself out by playing the wrong way on this pitch then you've let the team down.' If the lads can hold it together for at least a day and notch up at least a single milestone (100 for at least the first second or third wicket) there is no reason why they can't just chip away at this from there on. 5 partnerships of 50 will get them within touching distance. Though we've had real trouble sticking it out and batting time of late. The worst thing that could happen is if we go silly and are 4-5 down before stumps (which is what has happened too much of late). If England is too good and get genuine wicket ball deliveries then it's fair play.

I'd not be surprised here with either result even though I said yesterday that England can only win or draw from here. I was expecting at least 350/400. 300 in two days as a psychological target is not that large imo.

(/touch wood)

Yep, I said that yesterday. His insight is very good and his all-round punditry is very knowledgeable. That voice though.. eesh. Oh and congrats to Bell, great hundred under pressure. I love the way he plays. A man after my own heart, technically correct, a grafter and a genuine stroke maker with real old school style grit.

300 odd is definitely reachable as it still early day 4. Depends a lot on how England bowl really and if Aussies can dig in.

I think they said 280 was the highest chase ever at Trent Bridge? Not quite sure. I think there is still plenty in the pitch for the bowlers though. Everyone kept saying how it was great to bat on but I have my doubts. Especially against spin.
Aussies and 'dig in' has not had any symbiotic relevance in the past couple of years. Some good cricket in store anyway for these last two days.

Obv it's Notts Forrest football ground in the background on those wide sweeping shots of the river and the ground.

The pitch looks like its been flown in from Mumbai to be honest, rather than your stereotypical Trent bridge pitch. The person who holds the key to the match is Swann but you have the likes of Clarke who can really deliver.

Watson/Rogers/Cowan need to see off the new ball so that the middle order who I have underestimated isn't exposed like it was in the first innings

My god I heaped shit on James Anderson when we beat England 5 blot and called him all sorts of fruit serving, half volley bowling machine shite but he really is a world class swing bowler now. A treat to watch even if he's playing for England against Aus.

The way I always see a chase is I break it down into three's. If you can provide a figure from a group of three batsman for the innings then set the target. Not target the total chase (ie "We need 300 to win").

Watto/Rogers/Cowan need to chip in 100 between them, Clarke/Hughes/Smith need 100 between them and then from there with the leftover chase the last three to get them home.

Certainly 200 out of the top order shouldn't be out of the question if they bat time and play safe on this pitch. But that is not to say that it should be expected of them of course.

A great start by Australia, one thing to their credit has been their batsman aren't afraid to attack. If this was England it would be tentative stuff.

In fairness, the pitch looks very slow and Swann's bowled a few balls with giant 'hit me please' signs all over them.

As long as it is smart cricket. Hit the shit balls the right way and defend where it is needed. I am bricking it now. /touch wood - That little seed of fecking hope..

Very good start. Pitch isn't doing much for the bowlers.

Clarke is the key for me. He plays spin extremely well and has the temperament to remain patient, whereas Hughes, Smith & Haddin are reasonably attacking players and could all fall quickly.

If these two can somehow get this lead down to at least 175/150 it will be a huge psychological boost. Red ink here by stumps is absolutely priceless.

I love the banter with the people wearing those Sky earpieces.

The Lehmann stuff then being the highlight.

Shit that was well left... After missing a rank long hop.

Lol Nasser saying Rogers might flop - he's a massive battler, one of the main reason why he's on the tour.

Clutching at straws a bit early perhaps. Nasser really annoys me at times and has doen so especially during this test.

I was maybe being a bit harsh. He said 'he could be targeted and might be not be able to make the step up to international cricket

feck

Watto you fkn gumby.

eeeeeeeeeeeeesh that was going down leg, he's a fecking monsty stride down...... Eeeeeshhh

Watson should have walked the cheating bastard

 that was going a mile down leg. He's a full stride and a half down the pitch. This review system deliberation needs a look at. Cause the ump said it was out and it was marginally shaving the stump it should be out?... It's sus.. Very sus.
But them is the breaks. Watto always vulnerable after a break.

yikes.. this is ugly from Cowan.

fecks sake, umpires were giving those not out the entire test

Exactly. It's that deliberation of the DRS rule that seems to castrate some and let some off the hook. Needs a look at for sure.

Cowan looks like a walking wicket.

Which probably means he'll score a match winning hundred with a ton of lucky edges.

I've got no problem with how it worked there.

It was given out on the field and it was hitting the stumps according to hawk eye. That's unlucky sure, but it's by no means a howler which is what the system is there to get rid of.
