Ashes I - 2013 - In England

You're massively under-rating England.

England's batting is superior the Aussie's, this is typical first test match dross from them which we've had from the batsmen for years. No reason to jump to panic stations yet.

Our batting is crap and has been for a while now.

No matter what the result in this first test, England will win this series comfortably.

Bizarre first test thus far, if England get 270 ahead we'll win.

Not really, it's just been brainless. They're a talented bunch and can all score big runs when they want. Compare that to the Aussie's who just don't, with the exception of Clarke.

England's talent will shine through eventually, exactly the same as how they thrased New Zealend when they remembered that they were actually a better side than them.

Lunch is coming at a good time for England.

Bairstow needs to chill

Not gonna be an easy pitch to bat last on, I don't think its going to take a huge lead. Even something like 150 could be a difficult chase if we took early wickets, anything north of 200 i'd say would make us slight favorites. Just need to avoid a collapse, beyond Prior (who's had some dreadful scores since his century) you wouldn't be expecting much contribution so largely in the hands of these two and Prior.

Oh dear -

BBC Sport's Sam Sheringham at Trent Bridge

"At the risk of putting the mockers on him, this feels like a big innings for Ian Bell, whose average has been heading south of late. In his golden year of 2011, he scored 950 runs at an average of 118.75, in 2012, he dipped to 672 at 33.6 and so far in 2013 he has scored 270 runs at 30. Since scoring 235 against at The Oval in August 2011, he has scored just one century in his last 35 Test innings."

If Australia sort their batting out -- you're in trouble.

Khawaja needs to come in for Cowan. Warner should stick around.

Numbers 8-11 are good batsmen and importantly, Australia have good bowling depth which England lack.

Finn is not consistent and if Australia get stuck into Broad, could be trouble.

Broad will do do nothing for 4 tests, and then get a 5-for in the last one. It's how he rolls.

Have you seen the England batting averages, Apart from Bairstow, all are over 45. That indicates they can bat however their shot selection and at times their temperament, are letting them down.

Mostly from their great form in 09-11. after that our batting declined spectacularly.

I'm forever hopeful that Broad will remember he actually knows how to hold a bat. He was even being talked about as an all rounder at one point, few runs here from him and Swann would be nice.

Seeya, feck he looked absolutely clueless.

Didn't see him in the first innings. If prior goes quick it will be game on aus. He'll be the difference here

Bairstow isn't ready for test cricket IMO and Root isn't ready to open. I'm still surprised they dropped Compton.

Big partnership this, usually Prior either goes very quickly or goes on to get a respectable score, hoping its the latter. These two need to take England's lead to at least 150.

He did well in a backs to the wall job against SA last year, but he's been dogshit more often than not and some of the ways he gets himself out are school boy.

Why he's considered a better choice than Compton I don't know. I'd even go back to Morgan over him.

Was Morgan dropped?
Yeah, he started doing this really weird trigger movement and I think that contributed to him batting like a Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime. Then a really bad tour of the UAE (which was hardly unusual everyone did shit) did for him.

I think he's a more talented cricketer than Bairstow though, and I'd almost always back the more talented player.

He's a talented cricketer thought he was injured not dropped.

feck, hooped from starc

Big partnership this.

I think it's going to be a 220 chase if i had to guess - really could be anything mind.

Would have held off on the new ball in Clarke's posistion. Older ball seemed to give more control, and the new one is only giving Bell and Prior better value for their shots.

well they just brought up the 200 and are looking fairly comfortable from what I've watched (only half watching right now). I can see them piling on another 50 fairly quickly now. If Australia has to chase 200, I'd say they won't make it, but it will be a close thing. If England make us chase to much more than that I don't think we will be able to chase it down

Here's hoping the tail don't just completely collapse now, Broad and Swann can go either way, whilst when it gets down to Anderson and Finn we'll be lucky to add 10 more to the total.
