Ashes I - 2013 - In England

No matter what the result in this first test, England will win this series comfortably.

Bizarre first test thus far, if England get 270 ahead we'll win.

You can see us getting another 185 runs then? That's 335 altogther don't forget.

Strangely yeah.

I think someone is going to play a blinder, Bell or Prior hopefully.

Big partnership this.

I think it's going to be a 220 chase if i had to guess - really could be anything mind.

I can't decide whether you are backtracking on the 270 or not :smirk:

Yeah i probably am to some degree, fancied Prior to stick around a bit longer.

Still think 270 wins it, 220 leaves it as anyone's game.

220 is Australia's. All of them are due some runs.

I am a sports optimist.

No faith at all in Broad or Bells' tempraments though :D

If England can get upto 250ish lead it will be difficult. Swann will be a big factor in the last innings.

The Aussie batting lineup looks fairly soft. We should've bowled them out under 150. And I may regret this but you wouldn't expect Agar to make 90 odd again.

England are slowly edging Australia out of the game. Australia really need a wicket fairly quickly because I don't like our chances of chasing down anything over 200 right now.

Australia's batting line up isn't soft by any means. People on here keep on underrating them for no season. They won't win if England gets a 280 lead but they're probably the most unpredictable batting lineup in the world right now. Extremely attacking.

The way this innings has gone, expect a wicket to go any minute...

Just edging ahead again.

Yeah the Aussies batting isn't as bad as it looks on paper. Smith and Hughes have already improved and have contributed quite well in the first innings. Imagine Agar will bat at 8 from now on and Haddin has a decent record against England as well.

Lead of 200 up , but Broad is edging quite a bit, can't see him sticking for much longer.

Insane figures from Watson! 12 overs, 10 maidens!

Excellent partnership from Broad and Bell as well, very perilous when Prior went as there's always that danger of a collapse with the tail, but regardless of what happens now they've bought it to a defendable total. Be nice to see Broad get to a half century after some of his recent struggles with the bat, could do with him getting some confidence back. Bell also deserves praise, he was also excellent in that game we held on against New Zealand and stayed in under huge pressure, likewise against South Africa last summer in the 3rd test he batted well under pressure. The repeated suggestions of mental fragility seem to be a bit outdated and unfair really.

Anything over 270 should be enough for England.

Oh my god! How the feck does the umpire not see that? Terrible.

Broad has the right to stand there until given out, but what about 'the spirit of the game'? He's a cnut.

Awful decision, although if Australia hadn't wasted their final review stupidly they'd have got that one on review.

I don't really follow cricket, but in that situation does the batsman benefitting from the call tend to do the honest thing and walk off himself? Or is it "do what you can to win" like in other sports?

You should walk when it's that blatant. The phrase "that's just not cricket" came from the high sporting values that the game is meant to be played by.

I think it depends on the type of person it is. I've seen plenty of batsmen walk themselves before being given out by the umpire, Bairstow walked earlier in the day.

Broad has always been a cnut, it should be no surprise he's not acted honestly.

Someone on Sky Sports just called Broad "courageous" for standing there and not walking. I mean, really?

As much as Broad has cheated Australia should take partial blame for wasting their reviews.

If you're going to use DRS like a spastic you deserve to not have the chance to use it for what it was intended for.

A cheat?? He's completely within his right to stand there if the umpire does not give him out.

It's cheating, because he knows he's out and hasn't walked.

It's exactly the same as a fielder claiming a catch he knows he hasn't.

Or a football player throwing himself to the ground because he's 'entitled' to.

It's disgusting and ruins cricket when people do it.

It's a when in Rome dear boy moment.

It's only Broad anyway, surprised he was still at the crease

It's not exactly the same. One is passive, the other is active.

It's exactly the same.

In both situations you are trying to gain an advantage by being dishonest.

That's the dictionary definition of cheating.

If Ramdin can be banned for 2 games for not playing within the spirit of the game, then why should Broad not get the same punishment?

Shocking decision, but hardly the first time ever.

Everyone will be up in arms for a day, then not arsed.

England looking good here, told you to keep the faith.
