I hope we don't sign Vidal as I think Carrick and Herrera will thrive under VanGaal, and Fletcher and Kagawa will make strong replacements. I think on form Carrick is the better player.
Carrick and Vidal are completely different in their style of play. Carrick is much older and probably hasn't much left running in his legs.
WUMing? There are so may reasons that Carrick should not be a reason to not sign Vidal. He is injured, relatively old and need replacement in season or two, not in form the last time he was able to play, not the same player and don't deliver goals from midfield like Vidal, not on the same level as Vidal and so on...

I think we'll get 4th place regardless this year, and I'm sure LVG will bring in one or two of his own signings before deadline day. Can't think of any new managers that didn't buy any players in their first transfer window.
Yes I agree that we need to strenghten further, but we've waited years for proper cm's and now we have one in Herrera. Should we however get Vidal (and Strootman?) United will be favourites for both the league and old big ears next year, imo.

In all honesty, Carricks defensive work has never been totally appreciated, and whilst it might not have been at the levels of Vidal, due to his 'sparkling personality', its always been good enough to win several Premier League titles.
As good as Carrick was and has ever been, he was always absolutely nullified under pressure. It was why he always went hermit mode in the UCL.
