Arsenal - 2024/25

Still the last manager to beat Madrid in a European final btw.

The problem with modern day fans in general, is they think 'progress' is some linear thing, like there's some sort of plan which comes in phases with the 'eventual' final phase being winning all the major honours.

This is a fairy tale.

I know, it's a crazy fact. Think about Scottish football at that time, Aberdeen and Dundee Utd winning leagues, Dundee Utd getting to a European Cup semi final and a Uefa Cup final. Aberdeen winning the Cup Winners Cup. Absolutely bonkers times!

I'm not sure of your 2nd point is aimed at me, but I certainly don't think progress is linear, although it has been up to now. I appreciate the eventual final phase of winning the major honours is difficult, but at the same time, do you abandon what you've been working towards at the very first time that progress has stalled. I'd say that's a problem with modern fans in general as well.

He also won the European Super Cup..

Which means he made Aberdeen more successful in Europe than Arsenal (still are too)

Don't need to tell me that bud, hence my description of our European record as shite in my post you quoted.

The difference is Arteta isn’t and never will be anywhere near the same level of Sir Alex so the pay off won’t be remotely the same. Also what Sir Alex achieved at Aberdeen was much bigger than anything Arteta has ever done, so there was far more reason to keep faith in him.
Tbf, if past achievements are all the justification needed to keep faith with a coach then we would've persisted with LvG, or Mourinho.

There's nothing wrong with saying SAF wouln't have gotten 6 years at the current Utd, it also doesn't mean that Arteta gonna succeed if he's afforded the same leeway. Wenger found out the hard way when his crops of youngsters failed to grow together one after another, there are always inconsistencies, injuries, and pastures new.

is the arsenal collapse starting a bit earlier this year than normal?
Lots of games we should win until Brighton-Spurs in January while Liverpool has to play City (at home), Newcastle, Everton and Spurs away. The table should balance itself by then.
Third place prediction is still well on, let's just win the Kids Cup, try to go one step further in the CL and work hard to get 3 very good attacking players (ST, RW, LW).
Next year is our year™

Confirmation White has been managing a bit of an injury , as many thought his performances had been suggesting. Been decided the international break and the potential return of Calafiori after the break that this was the best time to get the surgery.

Not sure surprising as you mentioned. He has looked a bit off, and he is pretty reliable usually.

i used to think they were wankers, but i respected the hell out of them.

now only 50% of that statement is still relevant.

We've been getting pelters for ages now calling us Set Piece FC, playing Stoke ball etc so the mural and the song is a nice little nibble back. He's a cult hero now!

At some point, people will figure out how to defend their set pieces. It could be a real struggle after that. Their number 9 is dodgy and they rely heavily on a player that has in the past been injury prone. I think Chelsea are better positioned that these guys even Arteta has been there so long.

Sad news on Saka. Out for weeks according to Arteta. Tore his hamstring.

Extremely bad timing for Sterling, who you’d think would have been the natural replacement.

When it rains it pours, was hoping Arsenal would do it this year to give us a least worse option, looks like I'm cheering for Chleski if Arsenal can't find a run of form quickly.

Based on Sterling at Chelsea and in general when not scoring tap ins at the far post, the second part is probably a blessing in disguise.

Don't think they were winning it this year even with Saka fit. The talent in the squad is there but I dunno. Just feel like even if they got back into it, it'd still be the inevitable "we will do it this time" followed by 1 win in 5 league games and crashing out of the CL to a team they should probably beat.

With Sterling and Neto we can't even try a quick loan fix so we'd have to buy. Can't see anyone available that would make a difference in January.
It was a tough ask and now it's probably impossible bar a Jesus/Martinelli/Trossard insane burst of form.
Probably best to ride this period and work for the summer window rather than buy an average player that we'll be stuck with for years.

If they drop more points in the next couple of games, I'd expect them to go all in for the league cup.

Many thought the lack of doing anything substantial in attack in the market in the summer could come back and bite us. Unfortunately those predictions are looking correct.

I would almost put a bet on Rashford at this stage. They need someone and I think they will gamble on him being another case of a good player at a mess of a club.

I would see them looking at a 30 million fee and fancying the throw of the dice, especially now.

Arteta has quite an ego and would love the idea of reinvigorating Rashford and the media attention that would get.

They'd be better off gambling on a player like Semenyo or Elanga than trying to rehabilitate Rashford to be honest.

Loan offer coming in. Low risk vs high reward scenario. United clearly don't want Rashford anywhere near the first team.

I think Semenyo would be the one too, but they could end up getting Rashford for half of that, and they know he is capable of a 30 goal season. So I think they will fancy the gamble.

Semenyo would be nice, Elanga a lot less. How about a surprise Nkunku move ? Bit worried about his injuries but would add goals, Maresca doesn't seem to rate him that high especially if you go big for a striker.

We can't loan anyone in, we're already at the limit with Sterling and Neto. We'd have to buy Neto (doable) or Sterling (hell nah).

They can’t loan because they have two loans already apparently, so could he looking at a sale and a clean break.

I think Maresca rates him highly, just doesn’t see him as a great fit for his system. I don’t think Arsenal would be a good move for him tbh. He’s not a winger, so can’t really replace Saka. He could play the 10, if you slide Odegaard back to 8. That could in theory be a very dynamic and attacking midfield, but it’s not really a pressing need Arsenal need to address in January. I don’t think Chelsea would sanction a move to Arsenal anyway, unless the money offered was too good to turn down.
