Arsenal 2020/21 - General Discussion

That's pretty shit. It's a part time job, how much does it actually cost them compared to the millions they spend elsewhere? After 27 years at the club....

Nice way to avoid negative press too, announcing it on transfer deadline day.

It's pathetic - the owner is worth 8 billion, good job they're saving that 8.75 per hour.

I hope there's no truth to the Partey rumours. Because then they'll be another team that pulls well ahead of us.

They look pretty solid so far this season. If I were Arsenal I would be excited. Seems Artera really surprised us all and turned out to be a pretty good manager.

My Arsenal buddies care less and less about the club they said. United is on its way to becoming the same way.

And he’s pocketing millions more during the pandemic..
I hope he will come back when fans are allowed back in stadium.

I hope he’s there for the first game back with crowds!

Kroenke and co really should have been a little more PR wise and perhaps used him in partnership with the NHS or something as a mask wearing “Mask”ot!!! But oh no, they go and penny pinch the feck out of it and cause the club more embarrassment.

Of course it’s the day we go and commit to Parteys release clause, which if it happens I’ll be delighted.

All this drama and not a football kicked.

Deadline Day Drama indeed!

I don't really see what has improved under Arteta. Arsenal's metrics are genuinely mid-table.

They have gone from a +5 net shots per game side under Wenger to now -4 under Arteta. They were 14th in shots taken last season and now down to 18th this season. I suspect Aubameyang being a good finisher is papering over the cracks somewhat but this is really worrying for them.
They are more organized defensively and arteta deserves credit for that. They are hard to beat now. Pretty boring to watch but they are getting results. One thing I am not sure is how sustainable this brand of football is long term.

They are not. They concede roughly the same amount of shots/chances they did under Emery. On top of that their offensive output has declined significantly.

Here's the data. 51 league games under Emery, 24 under Arteta.

Shots per 90SoT per 90xG per 90Shots A per 90SoT A per 90xG A per 90
Emery12.394.471.4713.984.961.47

9 out of 12 points, good start. Think Arteta will do very well with them, I like him.

Very misleadingly selective stats. Emery had 25 wins, 13D and 13L, 91GF and 70GA, a win ratio of less than 50%. Arteta has 12W, 6D, 6L, 40GF, and 26GA, a win ratio of exactly 50% which goes beyond 60% when you include cup matches. Any analysis will show that Arteta has the better stats, and add to that the silverware he won.

Is this a serious post? You're questioning actual data regarding shots in order to cite results, which anyone with half a brain understands have far more variance.

Stats are great!

Cups are better:D

Beyond the stats though, he’s got a bit of belief and even resilience back in the players. Even if the GF & GA tell a different story to what we’re watching this viewing is better than Emery’s.

So far.

I've probably made over 10 posts on here the recent years about how baffling it is no one triggered Parteys clause for that relative low fee considering todays market and these feckers end up getting him. He would have fit our midfield perfectly and would have filled Herreras shoes quite well. Still can't believe he ended up at Arsenal but no point complaining about it now. Just quite shocking we were not in for him. You will rarely find players of that quality for £45m these days.

So.... you're refuting underlying stats that tend to point to long-term outcomes and issues by introducing a smaller sample of less profound stats? And somehow those are not the selective stats. If you really think you have a case, I'm afraid you're doing a poor job at making it...

(Edit: As @TheMagicFoolBus already said, I see now.)

Be interesting to see a breakdown of the type of shots faced... long shots, clear cut chances etc
Wonder if that’d be a better metric?

You can find those if you do a bit of digging but don't really have the time or interest to that. But as the number of shots, shots on target and expected goals they concede has remained constant, we can assume such a detailed breakdown wouldn't tell us anything new or different.

Bottom line is you just cannot compete for the top 4 with a negative shot differential. Here's last year's top four for reference. Arsenal are miles off in every column

Had fine transfer window but remember AFTV talking about Saliba for months and months but in the end they tried to send him on loan again while they couldn't move players like Sokratis, Kolasinac, Mustafi or Ozil. Their wage bill must be massive now.

For all the stick the top at United get, at least we didn't lay off or furloughed a single person during the pandemic. To me that is worth a hell of a lot more than getting every one of our top targets. Imagine spending 50 million on a player but then sacking your mascot of 27 years for financial reasons. Jesus wept.

We tried to send him back on loan because he lost his mother 5 months ago. Moving countries and league at the same time is proving difficult for him. He might be built like VVD he's still a kid.
Mustafi was always going to be hard to move on, being injured and on big wages. Sokratis probably won't be registered to play and we'll try to flog him in January or let him walk on a free.
Kolasinac is the most annoying, it was supposed to be done for 10/13M and he's on 100k+... At least he will be useful and play some games to rest Tierney.

We've finally reached last year of Özil drama and his 350k pw will be available to get Sancho next summer :o

Interesting PR move tbh

The club deserve every bit of bad press and humiliation they get their way tbh.

Ozil is a toxic influence at the club and probably doesn't mind parting with a few days wages to embarrass the club. This is a calculated PR move to embarrass the club. We really need to just pay him off and draw a line under it. Might be what he is angling for...

Ozil having to pay Gunnersaurus wages, Arsenal need to have a look in the mirror.

Ozil is paying Gunnersaurus wages until he leaves Arsenal. Magnificent gesture, although Arsenal are twats for getting rid of Gunnersaurus in the first place.

While Telegraph embarasses themselves once again.

This is not a defence of Arsenal's decisions in the last few months, but what can Arsenal even do about Ozil's contract? It was signed years ago and has nothing to do with the financial decisions the club has made during the pandemic. It's so weird that people keep bringing up Ozil's contract in reference to things that are happening in 2020.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think they'll finish above us this season. Arteta seems to have a vision, unlike us (and I was very much Ole in at one point). Our squad is better though IMO

That will go down well with the board :D i mean there fecked either way, keep him on and look like idiots, sack him regardless and look like heartless ba*tards,

It's certainly put them in an awkward position

It’s ridiculous.

Surprised Arsenal bought Partey, they'll make a sizeable loss in 19/20 when the accounts are released which will be replicated in 20/21 too with no CL football and with the likelihood fans aren't returning anytime soon.

CL qualification is a must this season.

We'll comfortably finish above both Spurs and Arsenal.. not that its anything to be happy about.
Was hoping for a 75+ point season.. that looks off after the shitshow we have had.. Will still finish 3rd though.

They'll look like dicks if they dont get him back.
They'll look like dicks if they re hire him and ask ozil to pay his wages.
They'll look like idiots if they rehire him and say firing him was a mistake.

Well played Mesut..

Yep, a class gesture, but an even better PR move. He’s wiped the floor with Arsenal here, and fair play. He’s been treated horribly by them since lockdown.
