Are female commentators so bad?

An equal percentage of female commentators are shit to male. Which is all of them except Peter Drury.

The question is misogynistic in itself. There are bad commentators and good ones, regardless of gender.

I agree with both of you. The problem is that so far, there hasnt been a good female commentator offered to the viewer. We have plenty of comments in this thread but nobody giving an example of a solid, generally well liked female commentator. I for example, really dont like Drury, but obviously overratedopinion does. But in my opinion, the women currently commentating cannot surely be the best out there.

There's nothing wrong with having a preference for men's voices in your ear rather than women. The manlier the better.

By few I mean there are a few decent ones in cricket. Not bad for a conservative sport eh. Boxing would be interesting, though
Would be like your mum trying to break up a fight.
Well in fairness my Dad would just make it worse. "Hit him properly FFS!"

Sue Smith and Lee Hendrie are the same person with and without beard

the female commentators are fine, Lucy Ward seems to do an awful lot of games though

All the ones i've heard for football? Yep. Pretty much. Why? They tend to overtalk during games and I don't like talkative commentators, male or female. Its why I dont like Jonathan Pearce and Conor Mcnamara and never liked Ray Hudson.

My favourite female sport commentator is Doris Burke. Perfect commentary pacing, super insightful most of the time.

I don't pay much attention to the names of commentators (apart from Peter Drury who as I mentioned I do enjoy) but the woman who does sky sports games is just as okay as pretty much any of the others.

Also to answer your question at the end there, I'm sure there are a lot of women who would be good commentators who don't ever consider it as a viable career option. Most people who are 30/35 up grew up being told "football is a boys sport".

yes thats perhaps a generational change that may well be in the midst of occuring now. So hopefully the options improve, as it stands I dont think theyve found a single female voice that meets the moment where the job is concerned, whereas in punditry and presenting, they have of course.

It would be great if before replying, anybody could watch this short highlights clip to see what I mean. She sounds like she's commentating from space, or through a tin, and there are moments later in it where things reach a fever pitch, particularly the last 60 seconds here are genuinely difficult to listen to on headphones.

I listened, with headphones too, and I'm not at all hearing what you mean here. It sounds fine?

I still find women commentators a little jarring at first, and I think that's purely down to 35+ years of hearing nothing but men commentate pretty much ALL sports, its so deeply ingrained on what I subconsciously expect when I turn on a football match, or any sporting event, so it sounds a little unusual initially, but it's very brief, and then I don't really notice it.

But I haven't heard a woman commentator that has been particularly bad. I don't know any well enough to remember their name yet (and I can probably only name about 3 current male commentators), but of the few I've heard so far, I prefer them all over Jonathan Pearce.

No complaints about their knowledge, but I do feel women commentators talk too much. There's one we get over here on fubu TV and she talks constantly. I believe she's an American, knows her stuff but has the same problem all American commentators in any sport have, where they are afraid of any dead air. There are male commentators who are just as bad , I absolutely hate Ray Hudson, he never shuts up. I just want to watch the game, the commentators role should be minimal at best.

It's almost as if this poster has form for condescending views on women in football.

As long as they can avoid tired clichés and bias, whilst not being Martin Tyler, then they're OK with me.

Couldn't find anything in the clip to be upset by. But I do wonder if there's something to your point, in that I'm pretty sure female stand-up comics have it a lot harder getting a following in their field, possibly because some people just don't like their voices. Maybe it's the same phenomenon you're experiencing here? In any event, the worst of the male commentators annoy me far, far more than any of the female commentators I've heard.
Maybe , just maybe, it's not just the voices? I'm no expert and there are probably no stats to back this crazy idea up, but I think maybe, it's not just stand up comedy and football commentary that there are obstacles for women?

Not gonna lie, not exactly the thread I was expecting to reach 100 posts within a few minutes today.

I just went back and listened to the video you posted. She's the one I was referencing. She's absolutely fine. I actually quite like her when she does our matches.

Same. Genuinely thought it was as good as any average male commentator. Only in a woman’s voice instead of a man’s.

Folk will get used to it...and then they'll complain about the next thing. That said, there aren't many commentators that I like thesedays. Liked Brian Moore but I think that was due to his voice and delivery than actual quality of commentating. And other obvious ones like Motson and the Arsenal supporting bloke when he was at his best.

Perhaps its as simple as personal preference, I appreciate opinions that dont resort to cheap, lazy accusations. With regards the video I think theres absolutely nothing of note until the moments of 'excitement', when there is an audible strain in the voice, as if to be heard above a crowd. I think it sounds absolutely terrible in this moments. As I said plenty throughout the thread, including in the OP, I dont doubt there are women suited to the role, but am surprised none have been given the role yet.

Having originally typed "maybe certain people just don't like it when women talk," I decided to try and be nice instead.

I loved that Scottish bloke who did the rugger on the been radio. And Jimmy Armfield on co-comms for the footy.

For the record, both men.

Personally prefer blokes commentating about men's football. If that's misogyny than so be it.

Feel the same way about a male football player commentating on the woman's sport.

There are people I don't like to hear talking, but mainly because they are arseholes.

Jimmy Armfield was fantastic. Seemed very level headed and all. Talking about Scots, I used to like Andy Gray as a sidekick* Ali McCoist just doesn't have it.

*apologies.

I bet men complaining don't mind the high pitch noises coming from the women when they're knocking one out to porn.

I reckon there's only one solution. Combine the two and have the women get fecked across the table while commentating on the game.

Then these lads won't mind having to listen to them moan and whine through a game.

I think you must have the wrong poster. I try to discuss the gender balance in football with some nuance and avoid the extremes of pretending there are zero barriers or differnces between the sexes, and the other extreme of emotive name calling. It can make for difficult or disagreeable dialogues, but conversation is generally the best way forward.

I’m almost impressed that this thread managed to actually get worse.

I think the thread is going well generally. Jokes aside, people have offered their viewpoint from both sides and only a handful have resorted to reactionary accusations and so on. I think its always good for conversation to occur rather than treating speaking about women in football as taboo
