Are female commentators so bad?

I'm not a sexist it's just women's voices are not appropriate for football.

I know you're joking, and even appreciate why you might think that's what I mean. It isn't though - it's just that every example we've been offered so far by the main broadcasters have been quite poor and lack the voice for the job. As so some male commentators.

Do men commentate on the women's football? genuine question, as I watch barely any of it.
I’m assuming some do? I don’t watch it either. But I feel like if I were a woman watching woman’s soccer I would prefer to have a woman on commentary. It’s a preference thing.

'I'd be willing to accept women who've smoked 40 a day for several decades' is not meaningfully distinct.

Stewart Gardner was MUTV commentator for years and then got jobs with other channels so what you say isn't true.

He's a very poor commentator. And yes, his voice doesnt suit the job at all. I do think by now though, we should have a 'main' female commentator, who makes the role her own like early Tyler, Drury (who i dislike), Tyldsley and so on have done. None so far have nailed the role, that's all Im saying.

Do you by any chance also prefer

White commentators over black commentators?

Given how we've established that it's a preference thing, this should be a safe space for you to share.

I think you're making a leap there. We all have different voices, its what makes such a range of singers and public speakers. So far, I dont believe any main female commentator has been fit for the job, and given that it is an area broadcasters are seeking to gender balance a little, I dont understand why they havent found better.

I saw a woman in the Bar the other day. I had to do a double take and make sure it wasn't the Lounge. Extraordinary times.

There’s quite a lack of female main comms to draw this opinion from. I remember when Jackie Oatley first started doing comms and the shrieking went right through me, but the same was true of Jonathan Pearce for me.

I don’t think it’s women per se, just the women that do get the jobs on the tv, much like most of the men. Not everybody can be Peter Brackley.

Yeah this is what Im getting at. As I said above, its a small sample size as of yet, but Im stunned that its the best that broadcasters with a wide net and budget to find the best have come up with.

Even my wife says high pitch hysterical screaming is not suitable for football.

I'll stress again that I think we should be able to talk about women in the men's game, without any criticism risking accusations of sexism or worse.
“Times are changing. Ladies can do stuff now, and you’re gonna have to learn how to deal with that.”

There is absolutely no issue or reason for women not to be involved in the men’s game, apart from men’s insecurities. The game is for everybody. You are absolutely going to be branded a sexist dinosaur if you discredit the job a woman is doing because of the tone of her voice, because - well erm, it’s kinda sexist.

I am in fact reading your post.
If 100 men went for a commentary job, there is almost no chance that the man with a high pitch voice, lacking resonance and timbre would get the job. Is it as simple as genetics, and that the female voice generally just doesnt meet the demands of the job?

It's obviously not all foreigners I don't like, just the awful ones I've encountered.

No disagreement from me here. When I started the thread I knew I was risking these sorts of accusations, its a very emotive topic for some people, but nonetheless I think the issue of commentary can be discussed on its own. Im talking about female commentary and the current standard of it, even how to improve it, that's all. Not at all suggesting women shouldnt be involved in mens sport, so its a little disingenous for you to suggest so. It may be from a good place, but I think that sort of emotive, broad post is a bit of a straw man, as it isnt anything im arguing against.

Yeah but it's a tonal issue, not a racist one. Honest Guv

To be fair it could be tonal issue, perhaps folk aren't used to female football commentators? A few very good female cricket commentators, though.

That's not a tonal issue, it's rank conservativism. Change? And I'm expected to adjust? I think not.

Do these people only accept voice messages from their male friends? "Text it love, the tone is tricky."

I dont doubt that there's a bit of this at play for sure, and 'getting used to it' is something everybbody has to do. But i still think the current choices are poor and dont do justice to the role

Ah it's hard for us to tone down our excitement watching football. So removing your shrieking is fairer.
On the other hand Isa Guha cricket commentary is superb

The real question is who are worse football commentators and pundits, women or Americans?

An equal percentage of female commentators are shit to male. Which is all of them except Peter Drury.

I would be fine with foreign commentators as long as they stick to commenting on foreign football. Coincidentally, I have no interesting in watching foreign football.

The question is misogynistic in itself. There are bad commentators and good ones, regardless of gender.

I prefer to listen to a man commentating on a men’s sport. Is it illegal to have that as my preference? And no, I don’t care if they are black or white.

Some of the inarticulate Dublin saps who do co-comms on League of Ireland games need to go to elocution lessons. Uppity proles, get off me tele!

I'd love to see how this pitches in the household. "Please stop talking. I can only abide the pleasant timbre of a sonorous bass, such as what I get from my footballing commentary. Men's football, obviously. I have no idea who commentates on women's football, bless their hearts."

By few I mean there are a few decent ones in cricket. Not bad for a conservative sport eh. Boxing would be interesting, though
Would be like your mum trying to break up a fight.
