April NPD: Despite GTA, Wii Outsells PS3, 360 Combined

What do you mean by that?

I think that he means non-casuals like say my wife (I don't even think the Wii would get her interest), or my mates in the pub. Totally different to say people like me who have been playing games (sometimes for a silly amount of time per day) since the late 70s.

I skipped the PS1 and PS2 generation in that I never owned a console myself during that time, which as I've said before, makes me totally shit in a 3D situation when controlling a character. I'm getting the hang of it though now, I beat Uncharted on crushing last week.

 You put the remote in a steering wheel that is often provided with the game and turn it accordingly to go left and right.

Why don't you just hold it and twist? A steering wheel that you hold in the air is one of the most ludicrous things, it's just pointless, christ, even the old school arcade racers going back to Outrun and Chase HQ has ffedback wheels in the big cabinets; older ones such as Pole Position where you would just spin the wheel as hard as you liked so that it made 176 revolutions were pointless IMO, you might just as well have used a joystick. All you are doing is providing an unnecessary metaphor that serves little actual purpose.

I thought that's what he might have meant, but also I'm wondering if he thinks hardcore gamers have overlooked the machine?

I owned a Saturn and N64 at that time, the only reason I went onto a PS1 was because I paid £700 for the Yaroze version.

Controlling 3D characters with a control pad isn't natural at all. The Wii remote makes it better, but really nothing beats the mouse/keyboard combination.

I agree on the forcefeed back wheel, and I can't stand playing racing games on control pads.

Using the remote as a driving device is a hell of a lot better than a control pad, it's intuitive. Added the plastic shell is just a novelty really, but one (for very cheap) that does add some degree of fun. Mostly a kid thing though, just like the golf club attachment.

You say that having not used it. For a game like Mario Kart where the physics aren't realistic or anything like that and a bit of movement here or there doesn't make much difference it's great because you don't have to hold it up in the air. You can have it on the ground or on your lap, or in any position that's comfortable unlike a normal steering wheel that locks you into a seat. It wouldn't be great for a Gran Turismo style game but it's relatively accurate, fun to use and most importantly you don't have to pay 50 quid to get one and then another 50 so your mates can play with you. It's free and your mates can bring their's round as it's tiny or you can buy more quite cheap.

It's great. I only played the SNES version on emulators and stuff like that but I find it better than the N64 version which I loved as a kid. The remote with the steering wheel is great and the addition of bikes is fun, if a bit gimmiky

Which games would you recommend then? I'd probably get Res Evil, Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart.

I just think that a digital joystick would do the job just as well. I suppose it depends on how the game itself takes the inputs however, but you should not be able to go from centre to full lock or full lock to full lock as quickly as you obviously could, thus my comparison to the old arcade racers like Pole Position. On those, your could spin the wheel and let go of it while going around a corner.

Super Metroid....what a game that was. I never did complete it with a 100% item collection though, 98% was the highest I ever got:mad:

The SNES had so many great games.

I hate the FPS follow ups. Awful.

I must've finished Super Metroid around four times. Shame they went FPS.

I enjoyed Metroid Prime for the gamecube, never played 2 and 3 though.

But you're right it just didn't feel like Super Metroid when it went FPS, although you do have to move with the times!

Donkey Kong was another great game

Well, moving with the times doesn't equate to FPS. They should've gone third person perspective. You can't even see yourself do all the skills on FPS, which was a part of the fun on the original.

Warioware is great when played multiplayer, Metroid Prime is a great single player FPS with some puzzles, Mario Strikers is great, especially in multiplayer mode. Zelda obviously is great and is one of the reasons I bought a Wii. I've heard good things about Pro Evo Soccer on the Wii but haven't played it yet.

As well as the ones mentioned, No more Heroes is a must (one of the best games released in ages on any system) and Pro evolution 2008 are recent highlights.

The godfather on it is better than the over versions too, since they've adjusted things that made the original boring, plus you actually feel like you are holding a thug against the wall and bashing his skull in with a baseball bat!

You must have started damn young? I suppose your dad liked to play these things? I mean, the SNES was released around 15 years ago.

Well I first got my SNES in '97, and I had that up untill I think it was 2002, were it got lost when we were moving house:mad:. I loved that console, the games were brilliant. Street fighter, Donkey Kong, Super Metroid amongst other kept me occupied for hours.

I'm going to download an emulator and some ROMS and recapture the memories:D

There's a lot of games on it that are far better than versions on other consoles. But then again, if you are only going to be playing Wii sports on it, I'm not surprised you've got bored.

I also wouldn't call any effort to fundamentally change the way videogames are played gimmicky.

Besides Mario Galaxy and Metroid prime, there really hasnt been (IMO) any worthwhile titles. Again IMO Mario kart is disappointed, the Zelda game was shite, and just about everything else was some mediocre party game.

And why has the Wii "fundamentally changed" gaming? Motion sensing has been around since the 80s.

Sorry but I dont buy into this Wii craze, for me its just a gamecube with different controls.

This is as far as I got in your post... You must be crazy. Zelda (old ones and new one) is by far the best gaming franchise and the new one (IMO of course) is the best game ever..

Nope, I loved Ocarina of time and Majoras Mask, but was REALLY disappointed with Twilight princess, ok it wasnt shite but it wasnt great either.......IMO.

Zelda for the SNES was absolutely phenomenal, as was Ocarina of Time. Only played Majora's Mask for about a day then by brother sold the N64.

And seeing as I don't have a Wii I haven't played the new one.

It's a bit stupid to go through a pick apart the games you don't like, then go on to state there aren't any. You've not played them all, and if you think No More Heroes is mediocre, then you have either never played it or are just being a silly fanboy.

There been nothing like the remote. It's easy to make statements like that, but since it's the primary controller for a major console, it's fundamentally changing the way the games on the are being played.

Well then don't get one. If you are so stuck being a fan of another console, then that's fair enough. But to try to pick apart each and every game on it is senseless.

Redlambs - Im not a fanboy, I own both the 360 and the Wii, a gaming PC and will definitely fork out on a PS3 when MGS4 and LBP is released.

I, like everyone else, bought the hype and went for a Wii because I wanted a different stance on gaming, I wanted to try something else besides the first person shooters, besides the WWII games, besides the survival horrors etc.

My first impressions were very good, at first I loved how the controller worked and I was convinced that this was a gaming revolution. However not long after that my Wii has been gathering dust with me only digging it out when I have mates over for party games or when the odd decent game is released. I can accept that its a nifty little console, but it just dont get it when people are bigging it up to cringeworthy levels as if its the second coming of christ.

Again as a MULTIPLATFORM gamer (i.e. not a fanboy of a specific console), I stick to my opinion that the Wii is a gimmick, and offers nothing special to gaming. I can however accept that you think otherwise and I respect that opinion - each to their own, eh mate.

Of course, the Wii could actually run all of the games on the 360 and the PS3, although they would have to be totally reworked in terms of code, and in most cases even assets, so having a go at the games in terms of gameplay is amiss. However, it must be recognised that there are certain types of gameplay that are suited to a particular control mechanism. For example GT5, I can try and try as much as I like to with the standard PS3 controller to beat the online time trials with a certain car on a certain track, but I'll never get first position, and mostly will be 1 to 2 seconds off, because I guarantee you that the leader on the board is using a wheel, gearstick, and pedals.

What do think of GT5, Weaste? Best one yet?

The final version will be, even the prologue stands up. In terms of its driving model it's excellent.

I tried the Grid demo the other day and though "WTF is this?", played it for about 20 minutes and deleted it. It's supposed to be arcadey, but bloody hell. I don't think it knows what it's supposed to be.

Grid? what's that then?

A codemasters game. You have a 360 don't you? The demo is available to download for 360 as well I think.
